Manual Mode on an AT

I use the manual mode(tiptronic) almost never, just wondering if anyone who has an AT uses it all the time.

Not me. I rarely ever use tiptronic. Then again, I don't drive very aggressively so there's no point for me to use it. Also, I'm afraid I'll mess up the transmission since I hear all these horror stories about tranny problems.

I use manuel mode all the time.
As soon as I shift in to drive I put the shifter in manuel.
50,000 miles and no problems.

I have a '07 TL Type S and have found that when I do use the Manual mode I get better gas mileage. I usually shift around the 3000-3500 rpm range and it work great. When I have a drink in the car and in traffic I use the regular Automatic feature.

I probably use it 50% of the time. I use it pretty damn often because I am used to the faster response time to it rather than on auto. I especially use it when accelerating on to a highway or maybe if I am passing somebody up. Basically any time I need to accelerate, it's with tiptronic

you are not faster then the computer. by the time you switch into manual mode, downshift, then press the pedal the person who left the car in auto mode, and stomped on the pedal is already passing you.

You know, I remember reading other posts about this Trew. But I can't remember if we ever got a definitive answer on downshifting while in manual mode. The Service Writers at my dealership said it's OK to downshift in manual mode. But I tend to trust Acurazine because we all have each other's best interest at heart.

Acura wouldnt allow you to downshift in a paddle shift mode if it was going to hurt the transmission.

I use it about 15% of the time I drive....mainly just to play around. I actually burn more gas cause I stay in high RPMs and play around.

Someone mentioned that the computer is faster than you would be downshifting. Well, it isn't exactly....if you mean what I think you mean. If you're driving at a low RPM and put the pedal to the floor (in auto), it will take a bit to get to up. On the other hand, if your in 4th or 5th and down shift to 2nd (driving about 53-57mph) you will instantly have high RPMs and all the power your car has at your disposal.

I read about it when I bought the car to see how the hell to use it. It will auto shift into 2nd gear if it has to, and also auto shift to 1st if your either stopped or slow down almost completely.

As far as downshifting goes, I haven't had the balls to prove what I read, but it says it won't allow you to go into the wrong gear downwards, if the RPMs aren't right.

By the way, if in a real manual (not tiptronic), DO NOT shift down guessing it will work. I bent every valve in a Civic doing that when I was younger.

I use it maybe 5% of the time I drive when merging onto highways so I can hold the gear slightly longer and be in the powerband when idiots don't like to yield on a short onramp.

100% of the times on my 2005 TL 5AT with 98K miles.....

At times the girl gets mad at me coz instead of holding her hand while driving, I hold the shifter to shift

but yeah I get killer gas mileage.....at times when i just wanna cruise:
start off at 1st gear....2nd gear before 10mph, 3 before 20 mph, 4 around 25 mph (wont let you shift into 4th before you hit 20mph) and 5th at 40 mph(again wont let you shift into 5th until 40 mph)....if i drive like that i get 23-25mpg city driving (not much traffic)....all shifts are at or before 2K rpm....

i let her downshift on her own.....i just brake and she downshifts .....5th to 4th at 40mph....4th to 3rd at 20mph.....anything below 5-7mph it comes to 1st.....very rarely seen her downshift to 2nd.....

and yeah otherwise spirited driving....VTEC is on my side

Nice fellas i have had the car for a just over a year now (15,550 miles) , and have really only used it a handful of times...less than 5%. However, just last week I was in the garage and looked at the owners manual on shift points- I am sure you all are familiar with, but what is really NICE SOUNDING is when going about 55 and manual (paddle) down to 2nd- man..thats really nice. You can downshift (TYPE-S) not sure if even different on 3.2- but downshift to 1st up to 41mph; downshift to 2nd up to 60-that is when VTEC, my fav, matched with CAI sounds so NICE However like I said, I am surprised by how many of you use SS- perhaps I will be using it more often now.

just practice with it. when you go to drive, drive around slowly, getting up to speed - around 60 or so. when your RPMs get high, it will sound like it's time for it to shift. so just tap it foward and it will shift. if you don't feel like using it anymore, slide it over and it will go into D (Drive) and automatically adjust itself to the correct gear.

My main problem (as I noticed after my first post in this topic) is I'll go for a ride using the tiptronic and haul ass. By that time, I'm still in 2nd gear, and close to vtec. So I keep going and pray that no cops are around. (speed limit around me is 45mph) It quickly gets to over 60 in 2nd.

way to over analyze... i dont think i need to explain when to use tiptronic as others here already gave similar basic reasons how to
