Yes there are a few things that the BMW may or may not have, (Park assist, rear-camera, not having voice command), but from a feature standpoint the TL takes the cake.

Now, how you compare a loaded 545 and m45 to a TL is beyond me. If I were to spend 55k on a car I wouldnt have even test drove the TL. (And of course the 545 starts at 57k anyways)

A loaded 5 series better kick the living shit out of a TL since it is nearly twice the price, end of story. With that said it's build quality/reliability doesnt.

If you didnt realize it, that 'free maintenance' is a gimmick. (Though I wouldnt mind it! ;-) )

Disclaimer: As for the 5 series features I glanced at the BMW website, it may have voicecommand even though I didnt see it, and it may not have park assist.

BMW 5-er has full voice command system with navi and limited version on cars w/out navi. BMW voice commands and bluetooth are considered to have the best implementations in the business. Free maintenance is a real thing. They replaced front brakes and rotors on my 2002 540 for free. You also get free oil changes and wiper blade replacements. W/out going into details all maintenance items are covered under the 4/50 warranty. When I had the TL I had to pay for oil changes and for 7.5K and 15K services. It maybe not be that much money but they are not free.

Now about the build quality. My 2002 540 was build like a tank. Interior looked new after 3 years and 40K miles. My 2002 TL had worn driver seat leather after only 1 year and 15K miles. The inside part of the B-pillar was all scratched by the seatbelt anchor. TL had initial build issues BMW had not. E.g. TL had uneven gaps between the air bag cover and steering wheel spokes. BMW had a very nice to touch M-steering wheel that had no gaps between parts and obviously no un-even gaps. It does not make much sense to compare BMW build quality to Acura. They are in different leagues. The current E60 is a different animal though. Still when compared to Lexus 430 and M45 by C&D magazine, Bimmer's build quality was on par with Lexus's and a little better than M's.

As to BMW reliability, I had 3 burned fog/turn light laps and the thermostat was replaced at 40K miles after I traded the car in already. Yes TL is more reliable than 5-series but in the same sense a Corolla is more reliable that TL. Latter just have fewer things to break.

BTW 2002 540 is not mid 13th car in 1/4 mile. The best I could do was 14.3. My 545 does 13.7-13.8 but the 550 probably IS mid-13th car in 1/4 mile.

have you thought about why they cost $2000 instead of $400 on TL? I don't wanna spend extra $1600 to get this, if you are really interested in that car, you can go talk in that forum.

realiability - I dont know I wouldnt comment on anything

Fact - I think 530 still costs mroe than TL. Can I beat 530? Of course. So I think you should talk about your 540 in a corvette forum

$2,000, $400? What are you talking about? BT and voice are standard on both models.

Cost of parts are respectively 2k and 400. Do you think BMW is giving away bluetooth modules for free?

Yeah, I do that all the time to...just to see the performance of the other car. Not that I think I can keep up with them, but more to see what their reaction would be and how the car performs. I've done it with a Dodge Ram SRT-10...those suckers are quick, but I was surprised he didn't pull farther away than he did. It's all in good fun.
Oh yeah, and sorry for bringing back an old thread...just had to throw in my

Just thought I'd chime in one more time on this thread that's got beaten to death. My brother owns an 02 540i 6-spd(BONE STOCK), I own a 2003 Maxima(Intake, Headers, and B-pipe), I've tracked my Maxima a bunch of times, I've ran a best of 14.3@98mph at E-town. Now my brother has never tracked his 540i, but I get to drive it often and we've also raced a couple of times on the highway. Each time we've raced he's put a pretty good beaten on me on the top-end. Here's what I found from roll races, 40-100: he has me by two cars, if we take it up to 125 or so, he easily has a 3.5-4 car lead on me and still pulling, now keep in my mind I have a car that has very similar performace with a STOCK 04-05TL or even better(14.3@98mph). We've never raced from a dig, but I'm sure he'll take me out since RWD>FWD. Basically AT vs AT and MT vs MT the TL will hang in with a 540 up to about 100, but after that its murder for TL, the 540i just pulls so hard once it reaches triple digits. I would like to see a LIGHTLY modded TL-6spd and an STOCK AUTO 540i go at it.

Just for reference, MotorTrend 2002:

This quote is taken directly from Motortrend on the 540i, "Thanks to the perfect spacing of gear ratios in the six-speed box, each redline upshift places the engine back in the fat part of the power curve, making the acceleration from 100 to 150 mph as exhilarating as many of the world's big-name performance cars."
