Looking to get into a TL....
Hey all,
I'm looking to get into a 3rd Gen TL 6MT. I'm presently driving a 2nd Gen CLS6. This car is a blast to drive, but it's been giving me problems left right and center. Quite frankly I'm tired of breaking the bank for a car that's not even worth much plus the platform is quite aged now. I'm ready to cut my losses.
Anyhow, I've always liked the 3rd gens, and bitches love the TL too. I want to grab an 04-06 6MT in Anthracite there's a few I'm looking at within my budget range. My question is how is the drive? I get on my car all day, every day. Redlining and hard shifts is something I do regularly. The TL-S is obviously my preferred choice but with the average one being upwards of 6-7k compared to the base TL I'm likely going to have to settle. As a full-time student I'm not interested in making payments on a car, which also presents my next question.. how expensive to maintain? If anyone came from a 2nd gen to 3rd gen would love to hear them chime in with their full experience.
If I do grab a base TL, I will be doing a full Type S conversion on the body and all that. Would that elevate my costs to the same as if I had just purchased a TL-S? Also is it possible to have a base TL that pushes out more horses than the TL-S with strictly bolt-ons?
Yeah.. sorry for all the questions. Appreciate the responses though so thanks in advance. Happy holidays guys

If your budget does NOT allow at TL-S, look at the 06, 6MT. It comes with the Brembo brakes and the LSD trans.
If your going to do the body stuff, you might as well look for a TL-S. They can be had at lower prices, you just have to look and/or deal with higher mileage or mod'd ones.
Reliability? It's a Honda at heart. Keep up with the maintenance and it'll treat you right.

back on topic..
does this TL seem like a good deal? '06 with navi, 140k (87k miles) on the dash. 3rd party dealer listed at 14.7

Bitches only care about the Type S's ;-) Actually thats not even true, I have had like 4 of them and my wife could careless about them.
BTW if you really drive as hard as you say you do your gonna toast the stock clutch in a TL pretty quickly. IMO they are fragile and cant really stand up to constant hard shifting. On my previous Type S the clutch went from perfectly good to shot in one hard shift at 60,000 miles and it wasnt a cheap repair, nor was it a abused car. Maybe mine was a fluke, but after reading stories f failuers are incredibly low mileage, and mine going at 60K, its just the impression I have on it now.
The price of the one you mentioned seems kind of steep. for that price I would for sure be looking at the updated and revised 07/08 models. Bitches would for sure appreciate the nicer interior, backup cam, better looking front end etc etc

Get one with a warranty and/or make sure you are familiar with all of the common major problems (most in the TSB area). I got one with 71k miles just out of warranty and now I'm finding all of these problems that would have been covered under warranty such as the 3rd gear synchro issue (honda ended up covering 75% but still pia), clutch master cylinder issue, compliance bushing are shot (vibrations at highway speeds), am/fm radio static on all stations, and driver's door leather panel is coming unwrapped towards the front. Good luck.

From the sounds of it I should just save up a little more for a Type S. I really love the CBP, but I can't find a single one around here. May have to import one from the States..
Thanks for all the responses & info guys. I hope to join this community soon.

most "bitches" dont' really care what you drive (as long as it's not a POS).
OP- good luck trying to find one with a 6MT that is clean...not to mention trying to find a type-s in 6MT.
Yo, I picked up the TL at night so I know these aren't the best shots. Taken from my S3, wish I owned a real camera..

Car is clean inside and out, the WDP is super mint no stone chips, scratches, rust or anything. I also love the fact that it has the ASpec kit without the ugly wing spoiler.
Coming from the CL-S 6MT though, the drive-by-wire throttle on this thing... ehh I don't like it. Maybe I gotta get used it.
First mod is definitely coilovers mind you the stock suspension is super comfortable, also looking for some TL-S rims as dailys.

Bitches only love TL's with pink rims.
If you are planning on doing a Type S conversion. Save the coin and buy a type S. Plus the type s comes with manual as well. You get a newer car with a couple newer features and a type s.
If you buy a base. Keep it a base. Get the A-spec kit or rear type s lip so you can run dual tips.
But you will always be stuck with the 3.2L. This debate has been beaten to death.
Good luck car shopping.

Big deal actually!
And grats on the ride!! Welcome to the 3G TL team. Another Ontario member =]
I don't see anything wrong with a TL-S conversion...
But maybe that's cause I'm biased and have the front+rear (then again... I HAD to purchase new bumpers due to damage).
BUT, just get the rear lip if you want a conversion that much. No point in getting a new front bumper and front a-spec in my opinion. Used that's still running you around 500 (and condition will vary).
TL-S stockies as a back up is not bad choice. Depending how much you get them for... might as well run an aftermarket.
Tl-S tails or modd'd tails with the TL-S rear markers is a great option though.

The 3.5 TL-S would have been nice but they were out of my range at this time. Didn't want to make car payments while still in school.
By Type-S conversion I mean like ATLP Quads, Type S Tails, the lip spoiler and just an aggressive stance. Not all out conversion. Although an 07/08 center console navigation/rearview camera swap would be niicee to pull off. Gonna do some searching on that.
I got an AEM intake on there and a debadge today. Not too serious about the performance in this car, still a FWD sedan. The goal is too keep this as a clean looking daily and pick up a real toy within the next couple years. Glad I got the 6-speed though for sure.

do the slave cylinder check-valve delete and your clutch will feel a lot better.
If you drive as hard as you say you do, I can guarantee you'll burn out that clutch really really fast if you don't do the check-valve delete.
I would also upgrade to the SS clutch line and throw some high temp fluid in there. It's cheap and if you run the clutch as hot as you will if you drive to redline constantly, you'll be better off. I actually just threw some Motul in last night after boiling my clutch fluid on Saturday night in a race.
wish i would have seen this thread sooner - if I knew you wanted a CBP 6mt I might have sold you mine, lol.

+1 on the check valve delete. It's fine to keep it in if you like a neutered shift feel, but it won't do you any favors for clutch longevity if you drive even remotely aggressively. Besides, bitches hate stock slave cylinders.
