looking to buy 2004

Hey everyone. Im stuck between and 05 G35 sedan w/21k or an 04 TL w/ 56k. Price is kinda close, a little more for the G. What problems would the 04 have that i should look for or kinda worry about? I heard the transmission was a big problem. I know that its the first year for the 3g TL and ive heard to stay away from the first year of new cars. Ive wanted to get a TL for a long time but could never find one that my wallet would agree with. Im getting this as a second car see's how I drive 80miles a day just for work and my truck is starting to feel it in mileage and gas. Any help would be nice. Thank you.

almost everyone on here is going to tell u to tell u get the TL, but i have a little over 80k on mine, bought it with 22k havent had any problems with the tranny...

but with any car as long as u do the right maintenance and some preventive maintenance u shouldnt have any problems.

go with the TL

Thanks guys. Im thinking to go with the TL. I also found when i picked up the G for the 24hr test drive that it has had the front drivers fender and door painted and pass rear quarter painted so that tells me it must have been wrecked but car fax comes up clean. So im going to get in touch with the TL guy and see what he can do for me. Thanks for the help everyone and look forward to being a part of the crew soon.

Carfax only knows what Insurance Paid repairs have been made to a car-

if you pay a repair yourself there is no record anywhere--the kind of thing you see on lease cars all the time

The 04 carries the gen2 trans problem- failure likely after 50k miles
Get an extended warranty in the sale that covers at least as long as you plan to own the car, say 4 years 100k miles

for background info:
gen2 cars had a court case which extended the warranty to 7 years 9 months or 109k miles-- if that gives you any hint as to the severity of the problem
It was Never fixed! In 05 they started using a different case design on the rebuilt warranty units with better oil flow but still have some units fail
Who knows how long it took to make that change in production models
by 06 they seem to have a handle on the problem as best they could- but still may fail

Other cars with similar trans fail at 51k miles and warranty stopped at 50!!!
its $4000 to replace the trans with another rebuilt unit from acura

Although a new tranny is a hard pill to swallow, I would think there are probably a LOT more people over 50K that are happy and don't have problems. I don't know...it was never a question for me since I knew I was buying my stepdad's 04 Aspec off his lease, and it's 6MT.

My roommate's fiance has the G...it IS fun to drive...but very uncomfortable to sit in, suspension is VERY stiff, NO trunk space. BUT RWD (I think) and 300 HP. I think the 05's didn't have projector headlights though, which in a day when hyundai's come with them almost standard, is a must. Repainted fenders and quarter panels...no thanks. You might find out when it's too late that the car won't align and drives funny and the frame is slightly cracked etc....eff that.

yea thats true. The car is very fun to drive seats arent to bad but i havent been sitting in them all day either. My dad had noticed on the tires that the one that are now on the rear must have been on the front because he said that the inside looked like they were toe'd in(misaligned) and now that makes me wonder. i know the car tracks good but its true as to being to late when things start going wrong. i have to take the car back to him today and i will talk with him about it. in the mean time i will try to get in touch with the TL guy and look at his. Thank you everyone for your reponses definatly things to consider. Keep them comming if you have more things to add. will let you know which i decide to do.
