Actually, he knew very well what he was doing. Focusing on the montly payment is how salesman/dealers trick buyers into paying too much. It's smoke and mirrors; get the buyer to look at the monthly payment, not the factors that make it up (OTD price, interest rate, term, etc.).

Sad but true. Most people don't do their homework before purchasing a car or they zero in on lowering the monthly payment and extending the loan as a means of purchasing a car they really can't afford. I won't finance anything longer than 4 years. My payments may be higher that most but I be damned if I pay for a car for 6 or 7 years. I like not having a car note.
