Llumar Metal OK for Navi/XM? Reputable shop says so

AcuraZiners,

I need your opinion. I called a very reputable shop in Jacksonville, FL (Tint Specialists on St. Johns Bluff that was even recommended here before). They charge $160 for metal or non-metal Llumar tint and I am finding it very hard to believe that it's the same price for both. I have my own MoleSkin kit but he says he would have to take door panels off even if I install MoleSkin or I could install MoleSkin day after the install and he would still give me warranty.

15% all around with his MoleSkin install would be $210 ($50 for moleskin), good deal? Believable?

He also says they have Solar Guard... how is Solar Guard compared to Llumar and what are the names of their non-metallic/dyed tint films?

Thanks in advance,
Nino

I just had the Llumar smoke installed on my 07 TL, NAVI. They used the 30% ATR smoke on the door windows and the 30% AT smoke on the rear window. I have not noticed any issues yet but I just got the car back like two days ago. I also had them install the clear UV guard on the front. The tint looks great but they F'd up on the windshield. The whole job ran about $320 but the windhield was $150 of that.

Just as an FYI - and I was pissed the dealer did not inform me of this - Llumar has a new product out that is specially designed for cars with Sattelite and NAVI - I think it is called Access. Also the Formula One product (penicle - it is ceramic) is supposed to be compatable with NAVI but not quite as dark - it is like 35% or the next step is like 15%.

Thanks! I'm going for 15% all around. I don't see Llumar Access line on their website.

Does anyone know what is Llumar's product that would be the best for cars with navi?

I had 30% Llumar ATR charcoal installed all around in my 05 TL Navi for $175. I didn't notice any difference in Navi signal and it continues to work great (at least in my area). It does interfere with the AM signal but I don't listen to that. The XM antenna is on top of the roof so this is not an issue. I am very satisfied with the Llumar.

I have 5% Llumar ATR Charcoal on my rears and 20% on my front. No problems, total job was $255...Probably a bit high, but the job was excellent and it's guaranteed for life. My one and only complaint, they didn't tint my entire 1/4 windows, they will be giving me a refund and will also be removing the tint from the 1/4's and i'm having a fellow AZ member retint the entire 1/4's with the same film

I have the Formula One Pinnacle tint on my car. I did the 15% on all windows except the windshield. I wish it was a little darker though. I think I will get the windshield tinted at like a 45 or so and it should darken it up just enough.

Even if you tinted your windows with Aluminum foil, it won't affect your Navi, unless perhaps you also tint your front windshield. The antenna for the Navi is in the center of the dash IIRC.

Creating a Faraday Cage is actually quite difficult. (We have a bunch of these at work in our lab). Simply tinting your windows with metalized tint will not a Faraday Cage create

(I used my cellphone inside a faraday cage the other day, because the network cables were not filtered through an optical line. (Installation error). RF waves leaked into the faraday cage through the wires....

NONE of the wires in the TL are RF-isolated using fiber-optics, and none of the doors have ground contacts in the seals. That means you can NEVER shield the interior cabin completely from RF, because RF will either leak through the wires, or leak through the weather stripping.

Sounds like someone has a pretty neat job...

I only made reference to the Nav issue because the owner's manual says that use of certain metalized tints may affect Navigation system performance...

and I'm pretty sure the Nav antenna is on the back left corner of the rear deck. I saw it when I was installing speakers.

I will try to get by the shop tomorrow to pick up the product brochure on the new Llumar product - I will scan it in and post it in PDF - if that is not against any rules??? I am a newbie to this forum and to TL ownership. Many moons ago I owned an Integra right out of college.

Are there any issues with posting a PDF doc here?

That's interesting actually. (Good to know). I assumed it was in the center of the dash, cause that's where it is in my other cars. I assumed our TL was the same... Either way, I have metallic tints on our TL, and the Navi/XM/AM/Cell work just fine.

From what I've heard, navi antenna can be in 2 places in the TL. One of which was more prone to interference from a metal tint.

While navi may work with a metal tint, I highly doubt it in any way helps. My navi has enough difficulty with overhead trees, I'm not about to add another source of interference...

Just an FYI - I had the UV shield installed on my windshield and I am not satisfied with the product. It is very wavy and is like looking through a glass of water at times. The installed said they would call the rep to see how they wanted to handle this but did offer to take the product off free of charge - GEE What great customer service. They shop even acknowledged the product is performing poorly and indicated they may discontinue carying this UV Shield depending on how the rep handles my case. My Acura dealer says there is a bit of UV protection alrady on the windshield.
