Live in Calif. bought my car April 29, have not gone to the DMV yet

I'm currently out of the state for work. Do I have 30 days to change ownership? It's registered till Aug. What exactly do I need to do.

Thanks

I doubt ownership can be transferred online.

Call the DMV and ask them.

Did you buy the car new or used? Did you buy it in another state and are going to register it in CA? If so you might need to have it inspected by the DMV, and it might have to be smoged.

if you are staying out of state- you need to register it there to you- that state will have a law about owner transfer paper time limit

Once you return to Ca you have a certain time- check the website, to register the car here.
make sure to get your CA driver license too- 14 days

They will want a smog cert- look in the pennysaver for 25-30$ coupons

At least they dropped they surcharge on out of state cars

If you do register it in THAT state until you finally move back to CA, you'll have another bonus... If it's registered under your name in a different state for a minimum of 90 days, you will NOT have to pay CA TAX when you register the car.

(Found out when I first moved to Los Angeles, and recently bought a car out of state) Granted this was like 15 years ago, so not sure if the time-limit is stll 90 days.

Check on DMV website or call. If we guess wrong you get to pay big penalties.

You have 30 days to change ownership otherwise you will be charged fees. Also you will need to smog it.

I just sold my CL and did the "release of liability" online. The guy who bought my car went to DMV to register it, so I don't know if that can be done online as well.
Here's a link to that information. http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm#BM2520
