Lets compare insurances
i'm a 22 yr old male. clean record. upstate NY. i was offered ......
$1500 for every 6 months from 3 companies = Geico, Allstate, Progressive(under own policy)
$2900 for 1 yr = from Liberty Mutual (under my father's current policy)
which pretty much sucks, meaning i'll have to pay about $270 a month on top of a $500 monthly payments for the car.
can anybody give some good companies i can try that i haven't mentioned?? or any way to lower my insurance. i'm also considering now the TSX since my insurance is high.
go for the TSX or TL???

Welcome to the forum
Would you consider to have your policy under your parents or families' name? It could be helpful. Or, do you have the home insurance? They may provide the discount.
Once you pass 25 yr old and have your own family, the rate should drop. NY rate kind of sucks for sure.

Insurance is not only relative to the vehicle, but your age, martial status and location (along with a miriad of variables insurance companies use to put you at their mercy). Being a male under 25 (and unmarried?) and a short credit history, you are in the cross hairs for high rates.
Try using one of the online auto insurance shopping / comparison engines. They will shop out what is insurance companies are available to you within minutes online. You can enter the parameters of the driver, car and coverage and see what comes up. The one I used was on the Edmunds website, but there are several out there.
Good Luck!

Are you allowed to have insurance under your parents' policy IF you no longer live with them? I was under the impression you're only able to do that if 1) your car is registered under their name and 2) you reside with them.

Do you know how much your friends have got???
IMO, go to get some driving defense courses and get cover under your parents' policies... this could be the only way.

Call Amica (800-24AMICA, www.amica.com), I had never heard of them until a coworker recommended them but now I have my car and home insurance through them. Rear ended someone in my Benz about a year ago and had to have work done, the body shop (which only works on Benz's and BMW's) said Amica was by far the easiest to work w and never really shot down claims. I had an adjuster look at it for an estimate then they took that and threw it out the window and did their own so it was up to Benz original specs (this was a lease) and total was like $2K higher and Amica never said a word. They also come highly recommended from the fatwallet forums & were rated highest in customer service the past 10 years or something like that.
$123/mo - 5% discount for having home insurance, 10% discount for advanced defensive driver, 5% discount for being member of state approved car pool program, 'pleasure' discount because I live <10 miles from work, single male, New Castle Cty Delaware, homeowner, 27 yrs, '04 TL + 2 speeding tickets + 1 accident ruled my fault.

Wait, let's start over. To put all these quotes into perspective, you should also list your liability limits and your deductibles:
$1792/year from USAA
04 TL, 89 Supra Turbo, 71 International Pick-up (no collision coverage on the truck)
$250/$500 comprehensive/collision deductibles
$100K/$300K/$50K bodily injury per person/bodily injury per accident/property damage
43 year old single male, no tickets, no accidents

$250/$500 comprehensive/collision deductibles

You cannot compare Insurance Rates unless you compare coverage to coverage. What are your deductibles? What are your liability limits?
NJ has the highest rates in the country for a bunch of reasons. Most cars/square mile, generous medical benefits, the ability to sue for a hang nail, etc. However, a male driver under age 25 can pay anywhere between $1000/year with the minimal coverage allowed by law (I think it is a $15,000 personal liability coverage only, no collission coverage), up to over $8,000/year for $1,000,000 liability coverage, collision with a low deductable, comprehensive coverage, etc.
There are plenty of on-line sites where you can get insurance quotes. First you need to know what coverages you want, and then you compare apples to apples.
Good luck.

Maybe this will help you. I'm 23 from North Jersey and I just bought a TL two weeks ago. I have a clean driving record.
This is my own policy with Allstate:
Bodily Injury 250/500
Property Damage 100
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist 250/500
Uninured Motorist Property Damage 100
Personal Injury Coverage 250,000
250 DED
Collision/Comprehensive 500 DED
DISCOUNTS!!
Passive Restraint Discount
Good Student Rates ( I hope you did good in school cause this is saving me over 150 dollars)
Preferred Plus Discount ( 5 years or more with your current insurance company)
The total came out to be $820 for 6 months or $1,640 for a year.
Definately shop around and Good Luck!

~$1450/year from Liberty Mutual (there are a lot of discounts in there though)
That's the total for two married drivers, over 35, with clean records, on the following two vehicles:
04 TL (w/ Navi)
04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (4WD-V8)
$500/$500 comprehensive/collision deductibles (dropping to $250 raised rates by about $250 per year... We held back that first year's savings to cover the higher deductible... just made more sense.)
$100K/$300K/$100K bodily injury per person/bodily injury per accident/property damage (our state minimum is $25K/$50K/$25K)
To give you an idea... when we added our 16 year old daughter to the policy, driving a 2001 Saturn SC2, it added another $1300/year to the policy, and that's with a $1000 deductible on her car! Guess who has to pay the difference?

So can anyone answer the question about having insurance under the 'rents if you are no longer a dependent/student? I've heard mixed things about this - some people say "Oh sure, no problem, just get the car insured under their policy and as long as you're an authorized driver, you'll be covered" to "Oh you can't do that, you have to be supported by them and live with them."

American Family
28 yo, essentially clean record, one policy for home and auto, single, lots of discounts applied . . .
2004 TL/6MT Navi
1993 NSX
100/300 + $1M Umbrella $500 deduct.
$1360/year.
As for the question asked about using your parents as the location of the vehicle and yourself when that is not the case, it can be done but it is a form of insurance fraud. I cannot recommend it.
As a practical matter, it is not likely to get you in trouble. As with all indiscretion, minor or major, the choice is up to you.

Hmm... everyone is proud of their deals... I just want to stay insured!
I'm embarrased to say it, but my company (Financial Indemnity) is dropping me. 4 claims in 3 years (plus one speeding ticket). Thing is that 2 of those claims were NOT my fault (one I was rear-ended and the other was from a hit and run in my office parking lot while I wasn't even there). The other two were me being careless in parking lots (took out the corner of a Beamer and did a side job on some SUV)...
Anyway, does anyone have suggestions for where to get a quote for a (gulp) high risk driver??
Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Almost 38 years old, male, never married, live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, clean driving record, standard coverage with a $500.00 deductible.
I'm paying $995.00 a year with Allstate. At one point I was only paying $750.00 a year with USAA till I had an "at fault" accident (which was BS) back in '99. That was dropped from my record in '02.

If I recall, my company allows us to carry our kids up to age 21 regardless, and up to 25 if they're students. Of course, this all assumes that the kids aren't living with us. I don't think there are any age restrictions if they are living with us.
Another thing to check on is whether or not the kids' policies can be "lopped off" if they get a little crazy. Otherwise, a couple at-fault accidents or speeding tickets could affect the parents' rates EVEN AFTER the child was removed from the policy. Our company keeps each driver's record separate, so we can drop a bad driver off the policy at any time, and our rates are based only on the remaining drivers' records. I know for a fact that this is not always the case.

Have one of your parents co-sign for the loan. Have the car in the parents name and yourself on the loan with them. You can be covered under their policy while you can have the loan in your name. I did it in PA until I bought my TL ( I'm 35 and don't live with them, but my house was also on the policy). Our insurance agent said it was perfectly legal. I was in 2 accidents (not my fault) and had absolutely no problem. I was paying $600 a year for my Accord coupe. My father had a 95 Taurus, plus we got discounts for mutiply car, home owners and life insurance. Ask your agent. The only problem is when you trade in your car, your parents also have to be there to sign it away.

2 cars full coverage (2003 Dodge Ram quad cab and 2004 TL)
2 cars liability (1997 Grand Am and 1987 Mustang GT)
I pay 221 a month or 2652 a year. State Farm
I am 28, married with 1 accident and no tickets. The accident was with a Semi and it totaled out my car (1997 Chrysler Cirrus LXI) but did no damage to the truck. The responding officer said no one was at fault and no tickets were issued. The insurance company on the other hand was going to let it slide if I took a low ball pay out (4 grand less than market value) for my totaled car. I didn’t take it, and my rate went up by $600 a year.
