KPTechnologies Auto Window-Up Module Attempts

First off, lembowski and I have not yet figured out how to get the module working
We took it slow and took nearly 3 hours at our first attempt.

I wanted to start this thread to offer insight to those who will be starting their attempts soon so that hopefully, we all can figure this out.

1. Removing the door panel. We followed this post by vp911 on how to install moleskin to help us remove the door panel. We spent a lot of time here because lembowski has a stubborn screw in his door and we were cautious removing the wire harnesses.

Some of the wire harnesses, especially the white one for the rear passenger window controls, are a pain to detach. We had to lay down on the floor and rotate the panel at an angle to get a better grip on the harness. The mechinal wire for the door handle (aka the door lever cable) will just unclip and lift off of the door.

This is how it should look like after the panel is fully removed.

2. Installing the module. We followed the install instructions for an '04 TSX, but instead of soldering, we decided to use
Wire Tap-In Squeeze Connectors from Radio Shack. The connectors are designed for 22-18 gauge wires and was the smallest I could find. Not sure at this point if it is the best solution (better than soldering).

A. Removing the speaker. The loom of wires to tap into is located behind the speaker. The speaker removal is straight forward: 3 screws and with some force, pop the mounting clips off. Be cautious, since we want to reuse the clips to remount the speaker later. The loom of wires is wrapped with electrical tape. We used a sharp blade to cut a slice and then peeled off the tape.

B. Connecting the wires. There is a loom of wires of all colors there! We tried our best to make an educated guess on which wire to tap into. So far, all the wires we've used in this loom are usually a bit thicker than the remaining wires.
12 Volts (RED) -> Acura thick Green with White stripes
Ground (BLACK) -> Acura thick Black
Ignition (YELLOW) -> Acura thick Yellow with Green stripes (? unsure)
Lock Actuator (BLUE) -> Acura thick Yellow with Black stripes (? unsure)

The last remaining wire of the module, the Lock Cylinder (GREEN) to Acura White/Red we had trouble locating. Each of the 3 window wire harnesses contained a white with red stripes wire! We took a gamble and decided to go with the one connected to the white harness (since the TSX guide also tapped into the white harness ). We ran the module Green wire along the same path as the instruction suggested and then tapped into the White with Red stripes wire on the WHITE harness.

We attached all the harnesses back to the door panel and put the panel back (without screws and clips) and then ran through some tests. No go. We attempted a few times and checked to see the the taps made contact with the factory wires, but unfortunately, we had nothing to test for current. Everything looked and felt secure.

We called it a day and decided to post to ask for help. Before I posted, I wanted to search the forum for any wire diagrams on the window controls. The main unknown we have is if we tapped into the correct Lock Cylinder wire.

After a quick search, the answer is NO. I looked chusteveb's original Window Up DIY and noticed where he installed his T-Tap.

Where that harness dissapears into the door behind the white plastic cover is a pug that has 3 wires, you'll have to stretch the plastic a bit to get to it.

Stretch up

- Locate the White/Red wire (bottom of the 3 wires) and install a T-Tap.

This is the wire that receives the signal from when you turn the key in the lock position twice. If your windows are down, you can check to see if you have the right wire by touching it to ground momentarily, then again a second time and holding it for a period of time. This should lock your doors and send windows/roof to close. (The door may need to be closed for this to occur simulating the car all locked up.)
Eureeka! I think that is the correct one. Lembowski and I will not be able to meet again until a few days, maybe even the weekend, so.. I hope this thread helps someone figure how to install the module correctly!

Any thoughts/ideas on what we're doing incorrectly is greatly appreciated. Good luck!

The TL is going to be a bit tricky as we don't have 100% of the information needed to complete the installation. I have never personally done one, so I can't verify that the wiring is 100% the same as the TL, although I am still assuming it is.

I like your choices of going with the thicker 12vdc and thicker ground wires. For troubleshooting purposes you can disconnect the KPtech YELLOW wire all together. The yellow wire is a switched ignition and its basically a safety to prevent the windows from remotely rising if the car is on. The OEM BCM will NOT allow this to happen anyway.

The door lock wire should be a thicker wire, as it has to hold the current necesarry to fire the door lock actuator. The white/red wire should be a thinner wire, as it is only a signal wire. In the pics it looks like the white/red was tagged in between the key cylinder and the power window module. This may not be a bad idea, if that harness is easily accessible (I can't tell where it is).

I can only imagine the frustration involved in attempting this install with no volt meter! Any chance either of you can get a hold of one before the next meeting? Its always a good idea to verify all wiring, even with a very thorough walk though. On a positive note, all the inputs of the KPtech module are ::knocks on wood:: bulletproof and should be almost impossible to damage in any way (within a 12vdc power source environment). Also, our output are limited to 100mA making it very hard to damage any in-car electronics should you have hooked it up to a wrong wire.

Good luck guys, and let me know if I can be of any assisstance.

Thank you,

Kevin

Guys, I have an electrical manual and I made my own window-up/down module out of some specialized timers. If you need some help with anything, let me know, I've played around in there a lot. Of course, the only way I could find how to do it was to pulse the lock wire twice and then hold on the second pulse. The "problem" with this is that it locks the doors and activates the factory alarm at the same time. If this is how the KP unit works also, then I can definitely help you. Let me know if you need any info from the book!

zax, the KPTechnologies unit simulates a lock and key turn which causes all the windows to close. Once the module is installed, two consecutive presses of the lock button on the FOB (with a delay of a sec), will cause the windows to go up. I am guessing it is similar to what you created because it also locks all the doors and activates any alarms.

Can someone confirm that these are the correct wires for the TL? Can you also point us to where we can find these wires? Pictures would be great!
12 Volts -> Acura thick Green with White stripes
Ground -> Acura thick Black
Ignition -> Acura thick Yellow with Green stripes
Lock Actuator -> Acura thick Yellow with Black stripes
Lock Cylinder -> Acura White/Red

We would greatly appreciate that zax123. I guess what we really need to know is the exact wires that we need to connect. In the looms there were multiple wires that were similar in color other than the stripe and since we didn't know what stripe to go for we just made an educated guess. Here is how we currently have this attached:

12 Volts -> Acura thick Green with White stripes
Ground -> Acura thick Black
Ignition -> Acura thick Yellow with Green stripes
Lock Actuator -> Acura thick Yellow with Black stripes
Lock Cylinder -> Acura White/Red

The two that I made bold are ones that didn't match up to the TSX model we were working off of. Again any help would be very beneficial

After you found the 2nd Acura White/Red from chusteveb's pics, did you test to see if it would work? What KP said about the yellow wire makes it sound like you dont need to have it hooked up to work(at least for troubleshooting purposes), and it's the only other wire you were unsure of.

Ok lets forget about the yellow wire then. We tried the white/red wire on the white plug. Sorry it was 10pm last night and neither of us felt like sitting around scratching our heads any longer. Chusteveb's pics were not discovered till after datmrman got home and searched alittle more. I 'm sure we will try that wire this weekend, if no one can point us to a wiring guide prior to that. Hopefully someone can tell us a definate answer before we take the panel off again. If someone has the wiring diagram please post it here so kpierson can look at it and tell us the specific wires!

As stated in my first post, I found the 2nd Acura White/Red from chusteveb's pics when I got home after our attempts. Lembowski and I will not be able to meet again until a few days so no, we haven't had the chance to test out the wires again. I have a good feeling that it will work when we do meet.

Someone out there willing to try? The first step is already outlined for you.

Once we figure this out, it should be really easy. Don't waste your money with a mechanic. I think the hardest part of this whole process is removing the white wire harness that connects with the rear passenger window controls.

Well its documented to work with 7genAccords and TSX, so we made an asumption that it worked with the TL. Its basically the same a zax123's setup only more simple I guess

We will keep everyone updated

We have had TL owners purchase the module in the past and install them correctly. It will work on the TL, we just don't have confirmed wiring colors.

datmrman, I have an extra volt meter that we can loan to you, if you are interested. The only drawback is that we ask that you place a depost via Paypal and pay actual shipping to you and back to us. By the time you pay shipping, its almost cheaper to just go buy one. It will be nice to verify the wiring colors, but if there are multiple wires of the same color thats not going to help very much.

I also have an LED tester that may work perfectly. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.

I thought it was confirmed someone had this on their TL...who was that person Kevin?

I'll be pretty dissapointed if this doesnt work and we're gonna be flooding the Accord forums with window-up modules.

Keep up the good work guys helping us all out with your instructions.

Kpierson, thanks for the offer!

I'm planning to head to Radio Shack to pick up a multimeter. I might as well since I might be needing it soon for other mods.

Thanks for the help datmrman! Please post as many pics/details as you can so we all can hopefully do this on our own. Remember: A picture is worth 1,000 words! haha

When we all bought this we thought it would work just off using this guys directions below ... but I guess obviously it won't be that easy since your strugllin' with it, right? OR did he not use the KPTechnologies window rollup module?

Sorry for being so late to reply...

My electrical service manual says it's the white/red wire on the GREEN plug at position 19 on that plug.

Here are some pics...

A picture of the door-lock module (scan from electrical manual):

Diagram of the green connector (scan from electrical manual):

Picture I took of the green connector when doing my alarm install:

Hopes this helps guys, sorry I'm so late to get it to you.

AcurasGhost: The link you posted is chusteveb's original Window Up DIY in which he did not use the KPTechnologies module.

zax: You are awesome! Thanks for the service manual scans! That is a big help to us.

It seems like you tapped all your alarm wires to that green connector. For the module, the instructions only stated to tap the modules Lock Actuator to the white/red wire.

KPierson: What do you think? I think zax found the correct white/red wire. Is it possible to install your module by tapping only into that green connector? From the scans above, which wire would go with what? I think you will understand the abbreviations on the service manual scan more than me.

Thanks all!

Yeah I tapped quite a few wires because I made it so that when I arm my alarm, my windows and sunroof close automatically. I also made it so that when I disarm, the seat goes into the right position and the mirror does as well. Finally, I have a way to lower the windows and sunroof from my alarm key fob. So I basically made factory functions work on my after-market alarm system. That's why I had to tap so many wires.

zax, you are quite the electrical handy man! Plan on visiting SoCal anytime soon?

Its hard to believe that there are at least 28 other modules out there and no one is posting their attempts. I hope everyone isn't just waiting for me and lembowski. Our schedules conflict a lot of times.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm waiting for you guys to figure it out. My car's only 2 weeks old and I don't want to screw it up!

I would say the wire on the green connector is the way to go.

It is possible to tap 4 out of the 5 wires at the connector, but the door lock actuator wire MUST be tapped inside the door. Its really up to the person installing it to determine where to mount the module. When I did the first Accord I struggled to find a way to mount it to the door itself, because the door panel was really thin and didn't provide adequate clearance to mount the module. If there is room on the TL it can be mounted anywhere (just make sure the door panel will fit on over it!!!).

Zax, thanks for the images! They rock. I wish I had a paper manual, I only have the CD manual for the Accord, and its in Spanish!!! Any possible chance you can scan/copy the pinout for the white connector? We really only need the 12vdc power wire, RAP (retained accessory power) wire, and ground.

I'm have to wait till they figure it out because 1- I dont have my module in hand yet 2- The mechanic that does side jobs for me probably will want some reference like the other DIY's for a faster and easier install. Once my damn exhaust decides to show up from that group buy over 1 month ago comes in then I'll be able to try this thing out!!! 3- I've got a new '06 and I'd like to keep at the installs perfect ... if possible.

I just wanted to lend some perspective and clarify how the system works. That way, people will understand exactly what's happening here.

Basically, when you turn the key in the lock to the lock position, it grounds the white/red wire as long as the key is held in the lock position. So what you must do to wind up the windows is pulse the key to the lock position, return to home position and then turn and hold it at the lock position. Everybody knows this.

So what the KPTech box is doing is receiving the lock signal twice from the keyfob on the car's lock wire, and then outputting a ground pulse, followed by a pause and then an elongated ground pulse for about the time it takes to roll up the windows and close the sunroof. When I built my circuit, I set the timers to something like 9 seconds which was enough to close everything.

That's why the only wire in the door that the KPTech box needs to tap into is the famous white/red wire on the green connector. Everything else as kpierson said, is accessible from inside the car. What I did when I did my install is tap into the wires I needed and run those wires into the main cabin. This way I could do whatever I wanted with them. I can't say that's the best idea here because running wires through the factory door grommets is VERY difficult:

Oh and here's the white connector:

If you guys have any other questions about my install, I'd be glad to help. I've taken the car apart electrically quite a bit (in fact at one point I removed the WHOLE fuse panel):

So I have an idea of what I'm talking about.

Good luck with the installs guys, it's a very cool mod for sure. I never need to worry if I've forgotten my sunroof open and it starts to rain.

Hey Zax123 thanks for the great info on the green connector.

Do these other combinations we made look right by your guide?

12 Volts -> Acura thick Green with White stripes
Ground -> Acura thick Black
Ignition -> Acura thick Yellow with Green stripes
Lock Actuator -> Acura thick Yellow with Black stripes

I think we are going to need to solder the connections instead of the wire taps we are using. Just to get a better connection. If you can confirm these other combos I'm sure we will have a write up after this weekend!

lem,

I can confirm that you have the right +12V line and ground line. The Ignition line I don't see in my diagrams. The only yellow/green I can find is one side of the lock actuator. The other side of the lock actuator is indeed yellow/black and yellow/black is the positive lock signal wire. Looking through my electrical manual, I honestly don't see any wires that are hot only when the key is at ACC or ON position. I could be wrong though. Only way to know would be with a multimeter.

I would definitely solder all connections. I never use those 3M taps as they could shake loose and you really don't want to go back into your door.

I read through the whole manual for the power locks and power windows section and nowhere does it should that there's an ACC or ON signal coming into the door and I quote: "With the ignition switch in ON (II), battery voltage is supplied through fuse 21 to the MICU (Rob's note - the MICU is under the dash). The MICU communicates the ignition switch ON (II) info via a multiplexed signal to the power window master switch enabling power window operation.

That sounds like bad news to me, but I could have missed something and not realized that there is ACC or ON power somewhere in the door.

What you guys might want to do in the end is run the lock wire through the grommets into the body of the car and put the KP module in there. But it's a ton of work. If the TSX people have found an ACC/ON wire, let me know some details and I'll find the equivalent wire in our electrical system.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If there isn't an ignition wire in there its not a big deal. That wire, as stated before, is just a safety that prevents the windows from remotely raising if the ignition is on.

Beyond that, it doesn't do a thing. The car should not allow you to remotely raise the windows anyway when the car is on, so its redundent and not technically needed for the module to operate as designed.

It sounds like you would be best off to just tape off the yellow wire, and not even worry about it. Focuse on the 4 wires that are imperative to operation - power, ground, door lock actuator, and key cylinder lock switch.

Good luck!

Built B16A: Thanks for checking this thread out. Can you confirm the color wires that you used to connect the KP module?

12 Volts (RED) -> Acura thick Green with White stripes
Ground (BLACK) -> Acura thick Black
Ignition (YELLOW) -> Acura thick Yellow with Green stripes
Lock Actuator (BLUE) -> Acura thick Yellow with Black stripes
Lock Cylinder (GREEN) -> Acura White/Red in Green window connector

I assure you that the KPTech module is just spitting out a few ground pulses. Nothing that could cause any serious damage to the car. I'm sure that with the information provided in this thread, the install will be painless and correct. I've done much more experimental things to the car and it's still running beautifully.

This thread is not comforting, and I appretiate you guys making guinea pig out of your $35000+ car, keep us updated.
As stated, we have sold the module to TL owners in the past, and they didn't have any problems. It will work with the TL.

Honestly, what we have here, are people trying to install the modules without the proper tools. It would be like trying to install a new storm door on your house, but without a drill and a screwdriver (yes, I just got done putting one on, it was miserable).

Its really a thin line, when we first started selling these window modules over two years ago we strongly recomended professional installation on them. This comes from my background of 10+ years working with car alarms and other car electronics and the things I've seen and heard.

The downside to this recomendation is that it was very hard to sell modules because most custom shops won't touch merchandise they don't sell (and I honestly can't blame them for that, I hated installed other manufacturers products). So, we decided to loosen our recomendation.

We have people all the time install these modules without using meters. And, we've modified our boards countless times to 'protect' them and the car in these circumstances. Our first modules didn't have any current limiting on them at all, so if you hooked them up wrong, they were fried. Now, if you hook one up wrong chances are it will be fine, and there will be no damage to the car whatsoever.

Also, with new model years and different lines of cars we don't always have the luxery of having all the install information. We are based out of Dayton, Ohio, and as much as I hate it, its just not a 'car' city (and with its close proximity to Detroit it is still a strong GM/Ford city). I would love to have the ability to personally install a module on a TL before we started selling module to TL owners, but that isn't always a possibility. Our install instructions are designed to give enough information to install these modules with zero wiring information. We explain in detail how to measure each wire, and approximatly what the meter should say at each step. As I'm sure most of you have noticed the TL is not yet on our wire guide. Most Hondas/Acuras share wire colors, but that isn't always a guarentee. It also isn't a guarentee that your '05' wiring will match others '05' wiring, as the manufacturer is free to make any changes they see fit, even mid model year (this doesn't happen near as much as it used to).

If anyone feels that they were misled by our groupbuy we do offer a full money back guarentee. Drop me an Email/PM/IM and we'll arrange for a return/refund.

Good luck to everyone as they begin/continue their installs!!!

I would not give KPierson a hard time. He has been very helpful to us. Thanks for creating a nice solution and backing up your product with great service!

It is true that lembowski and I do not have all the recommended tools, but we decided to give it a try considering we had some helpful guides. In the end, once all the correct wires are determined, this is a very simple mod!

Here is FAST4DR's quick writeup. He did not remove the speaker at all.

Now that there is proof the module works. Everyone can stop waiting.

That doesn't look to hard, looks like he used the same wire Chusteveb did for the KPTech's green wire. Thank you to datmrman, lembowski, and FAST4DOOR, for all there work and for sharing what they discovered. KPierson, please let us know when more modules become available, I still plan on doing this. Thanks to you also. This is a great mod.

In all fairness, when you purchase a storm door, it doesn't come with instructions to install wooden shutters on your window either. I guess I am amazed that you sold a product without some QA process that included putting directions in for the vehicle that it was sold for.

Good luck everyone!
