Are keys covered in warranty?

I have a CPO 08 TL-S that i just purchased less than a month ago, during this time i took it to a road trip and noticed when i tried to lock the glove box with my memory 1 key, it did not want to lock.. i went home and tried the memory 2 key and it worked fine. Comparing the two keys the first one seems a bit warned out? (the laser cuts) if so, would the dealer replace this for me under warranty?

i tried searching but nothing about warranty specifics.. sorry if i missed it.

thanks in advanced

Warranty or not, just being purchased less than a month ago with a minor issue like a key, the dealer "should" take care of you. If not, they suck.

In theory, the CPO warranty is "supposed" to be an extension of the bumper-to-bumper warranty for I think the first 12/12k if I recall? Can't remember exactly, but for the most part a good dealer will handle these issues for you no matter what.

go back to the dealer and try. It might just need a new battery in it.

Does anybody know if the Acura Care warranty covers keys? Mine works fine but it's all jacked up, it's not closing all the way anymore (swichblade style)

It shouldn't need a new battery to lock and unlock a glove box.

Thanks for the reply guys, i ended up going to the dealer today to get some stuff fixed including the gas cap problem..

the dealer said the previous owner had the key recut.. only they recut the VALET KEY. so now i have a memory 1 fob with a valet key. Unfortunately they said it is not covered by warranty. This was at a closer dealership to me than where i originally bought the car. I might try my luck at the place where i bought the car to see what they say.. but i'm not gonna expect much.

On a side note, where is the cheapest place to get my key recut to the original master key?

New member here, I've had my CPO 2008 TL for one month. I had the exact same issue. When I bought the car at Jackson Acura (Roswell, GA), it only had one key-remote and the valet key. I asked if they could provide another, and they did at no charge.

Over the next weekend, I discovered the new key they cut for me was essentially a valet key; wouldn't work on the glove box or trunk pass-through. Took back to them and they recut it, no charge. It took them a couple of tries, ordering a new blank, and reprogramming the immobilizer chip.

Great service from the dealer in this case.

So is the dealer saying because the previous owner had it recut, that's why you get what you get?

I'd challenge it. I think it falls more under CPO than warranty coverage.

On the CPO checklist (150 point inspection thing), one of the line items I think says "2 master keys and 1 valet." It shouldn't matter what the previous owner did because the dealer "inspected" it before selling it to make it CPO.

Thanks for your input TKO, while i agree with you, im trying to figure out the best way to approach the dealer. I'm not the best at these kinds of things.. Should i just go back to the original dealer and demand that they fix this?

Hope you get new keys, seems like it fails according to the CPO process if I understood it right.

I had this happen to me after couple of months after buying the car CPO. They replaced the lock cylinder on the glove box and got new separate keys to them. Yes you will have 2 keys now instead of one. One is for your car in general and the other key is going to be your glove box key.

Just be polite and firmly tell them your position. Show them the checklist you got with the car and point out #18. Tell them you didn't get 2 masters. I wouldn't be surprised if they still deny you though and make up some other bs. If you get nowhere with the dealer, don't be afraid to call ACS.

And even if they change their story to a defective lock or key, then it should be a warranty issue IMO. Again, don't hesitate to call ACS.

Good luck.

Thanks, i'm currently trying to get a hold of the CPO manager, as i've talked to several people before him at this dealership and lead to to him. (salesman that i bought the car from, service, now cpo manager)

As always, he's not answering his phone, so i left a message and am waiting for his phone call back..

I don't see how they can say it's a defective lock too since my memory 2 key works fine, and the cuts on the memory 1 key look the same as the cuts on the valet..

If worse comes to worse i will take your advice and take it to ACS. Thank you for all your help!

Hmmm...don't think I got my valet key. Guess after 3 years it may be a bit late to go back and ask?

Update: The CPO manager just called me, sounded like he was willing to do something about it but we'll see tomorrow. He told me to bring it in tomorrow to see if the service department can do anything about it (It's a start i guess). I will update you guys as follows!

A little update to my fiasco: Well i went to the dealer this morning, started out bad already (not the service, it was pretty good.) So the parts dude got the keys mixed up, ended up cutting my GOOD MASTER KEY to the BAD KEY, instead of the other way around.. so now i have three valet keys essentially.

Now, service apologized for the whole mishap, got my VIN to have two more master keys re-cut. BUT it does not stop here!.. after several tries of both master and valet cuts from the acura computer, none worked for the glove nor the rear center trunk latch. My memory TWO key that was working before it was messed up by the parts dude worked on all locks.

Furthermore, a little digging from my service adviser said the previous owner did have the keys replaced, so the real culprit to blame would be the acura computer/key cutter database or whatever.. Now i have to go back on tuesday in where they will remove the glove box lock and all that other junk to compare/inspect/whatever the whole thing to see what's up.

Just my luck right? I'll update you guys as i find out more on tuesday.
