Might be moving from NYC to Dallas soon... I have two cars and I'm dreading the thought of having to drive to Dallas and then come back again to NYC to pick up my TL-S and drive there again (24 hours...)

I spent $$$ fixing it up and had Northern Jersey master mechanic Paul inspect it... Don't want to get rid of this "rare" gem since it has no issues and it'd probably be hard to find another one in this condition.

What would you do?...

Yeah, I considered shipping it over, but I have my fears of the risk of doing that... 😱

 

Here's an option for you; I've been thinking of flying to Dallas and visit my sister-in-law, and while there, buy an old no-salt 1998-2008(ish) Camry or Accord for my daughter, and then drive back to New Hamster.

Depending upon when you are planning to move one of your cars, I could drive the other at the same time, and then buy the CamCord after we get to Dallas.

Thoughts?

 

Probably cheaper to schedule the shipping at least a month out. Take pictures of the car beforehand and make sure the shipper is insured, has good reviews, and all that stuff. FYI I've not shipped a car before but I do know the service exists

 

There are two ways to ship a car commercially; via a truck and via a "Drive-Away" service. The former is pretty obvious as to what it is, that latter is where you drop your car off and the service arranges for a driver to physically drive the car and drop it off at a certain location by a certain day (I've been a driver on a number of occasions). As I understand it, most of the drivers used for drive-away services are truck drivers (and other professional long-haul drivers) who don't like to fly.

Thanks. The thing is, it is also kind of self-serving. I have lots of PTO to burn this year so taking a few extra days off to drive to Dallas versus flying is a non-issue. I figure it would be a win-win if @juskimdh takes me up on my offer.

Horseshoez.. you the man... But it's funny how plans change so radically and quickly.. looks like I'll be moving into Manattan around September/October, so I can hold onto my car a little longer! But by that time, I'd still have to get rid of one of my cars... not trying to deal with alternate parking for 2 cars..

Yup, in the last week my company has started discussing moving my wife and me down to Greensboro from New Hamster. Yeesh!

No decision at all; keep the TL-S 6MT; Uber for Wifey.

I'm likely going to end up selling the TL-S... Sell it to someone who'd have more time to drive and appreciate it... Unfortunately, once I move to Manhattan, I'll probably be racking up less than 100 miles a year...

Your wife must be really pretty, I wouldn't put up with that
In my case, our TL is the first manual she ever drove. She learned on it, now she loves it. In fact, it's been her daily driver for years now. When the conversation started about getting a "toy" car, if it didn't have a manual, she would veto.

I'm sure you'll find a good home for your TL though!

Haha....I taught my wife how to drive a MT within the first 2 months of us dating. I knew I would always have a MT and had a feeling she was going to be around for a while. No way I wanted to worry that she couldn't drive my car if I was unable to (happened a lot in my younger years) or if her car was disabled. She has been driving the TL as her non-winter daily for 5+ years now.

 

When my wife and I were discussing upgrading one of our vehicles to a minivan (growing family and all that), she asked, "Can we get a minivan with a stick shift?" I had to say, "No sweetie, vans big enough for what we need are all automatics."

She didn't miss a beat, "Well then I'm not driving it, you're driving it!"

 

Haha, y'all have cool wives... I should set some time to try and teach my wife... Maybe I can end up keeping the TL-S after all....

 

I totally agree with Shoes and Jackass, I taught my wife the first year we dated because she was so curious...a few really frustrating minutes in a parking lot later...she was a pro. I actually gave her my last car which was a manual and didn't want to sell it. I picked up a type s 6mt and sometimes she'll take it out for a drive. Kinda hot actually-Good luck with whatever you choose

 

Since you're moving to Dallas make sure your A/C works well :-)

Well my first choice would be letting horseshoez drive it, assuming the scheduling works out....

My second idea might be a little more out there, but you could post online (facebook, craigslist, or something) that you're traveling from NY to TX and need someone to drive your second car one-way. If you pay for gas, I'll bet there's at least someone that needs to travel down that way for cheap, and that would be a viable option for them. Also assuming it's not a crackhead that takes off with your car once you're into the next state. But seriously, I don't think it would hurt to ask.

 

I'm thinking about leaving it in NY for a bit, fly back a couple months later and make a fun roadtrip out of it... But, yeah I appreciate horseshoez's offer, but we'll see as it gets closer!
