I looked into the S60R before I got the TL, long story short, maintenance costs scared the hell out of me. Unless you have a lemon it's almost always cheaper to keep the car you have running then getting a new one. Plus the new ones are really Chinese, if European reliability was already poor, having them bought out by the Chinese isn't gonna help lol.

My buddy's 04 S60R (stock 300HP/295TQ turbo AWD) has no problem whatsoever keeping up with my 07 TL-S and you can disable the traction control system on his model year (most people simply don't know how), not sure about the new ones. Both are manuals. His AWD and factory adjustable suspension system does allow for more spirited cornering vs the FWD setup in my TL-S, and my TL-S is more lux and refined on the interior. I do find the TL-S better looking, but the 04-07 S60R with the factory body kit isn't bad looking either, and far from boring. This (the R) is not your grandpa's volvo...

The new ones have ~325HP/354TQ in the R-Design, but I'm not sure if they've ever considered that one a true "R" model. My friend's R has more than just a bit more pep under the hood...it has a 3 mode active suspension system, which in Advanced mode it bumps the timing up 6 degrees and changes the fuel mapping on the throttle, making the car very responsive and feel more like a supercharger (vs a turbo), variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust valves, 4-piston Brembo brakes all around (yes, even in the rear), massive 13" ventilated discs, special leather interior, gages, etc....his rear seats fold down too..

Driving both, the S60R leans more towards sport, while the TL-S leans more towards luxe.

If it was an R and good looking, I'd say go for it, but the guys that designed the latest body style apparently drank the same koolaid as the guys who designed the latest TLs...I say keep your TL a little while longer and wait for something else to come along.
Not with AWD it doesn't.

Keep your tl.
Unless you are considering the 04-7 s60r 6mt (which you aren't, and why I don't know) keep yours.

I wanted an R 6mt as a 'future family hauler' when kids come down the road. I searched for the right car in my low budget for over 1.5 years. Never found the right one and I'm glad I didn't because recently I found out that fitting a rear facing child seat in the back is super tight and don't even think about sitting in front of it when you do.
It's a shame, I love those cars with the oem sport body kit. The push button selectable suspension is IMO incredible. Nothing like pushing 'comfort' when mama is in tow and quickly switching out of couch mode into 'advanced' to feel every pebble in the road when there is some solo time. And there is a 'sport' button inbetween.

So yea, keep your TL IMO

from my brief research the older turbo AWD volvo sedans had issues with their angle/bevel gear..is that still a problem, and how common is it?

Their main problem is actually the slave cylinder. It fails, and it's internal to the tranny, making a $300 job into a $1500+ one (gotta replace the clutch with it because it gets wet with clutch fluid).

A friend of mine went 180k with his, only major problem was the slave cylinder. Bevel gear was fine. Turbo, tranny, engine are bulletproof.
