one night after clubbing....i raced my friend in his clk430....and killed him..........i owned his ass......lol...and we actually raced 3 times....he starts off a little faster then the TL...but i end up catching up and just zooming by...when he hit 210km/h i was already at 230km/h (we were on the phone) lol.... i love these luxury japanese cars.....

nice kill! when the 2002 TLS first came out my friend had one and raced an AMG on the local highway. he had two people in the car and the AMG didn't pass him until like 125MPH. and even then it was only by half a car to 135. they're not all that unless you go all out and buy the top model i guess. there is a company out there called rentech that beefs up mercedes and turns them into street demons. nice stuff.

Just to set the record straight, a 430 is not an AMG. Yes, they can put AMG stickers on it, but that does not make it an AMG.

than u and ur friend are very gullible people. the 430 does not have an AMG engine, it might have an AMG package (i.e. rims). and if u were to race a CLK 55 AMG you wouldnt have a chance

 

Yes, what your friend thought is an AMG car, is not really an AMG car It is basically an upgraded clk without the AMG powertrain. Basically, AMG didn't get their hands on it to turn it into a beast. They basically mailed out their "little" accessories and installed by the dealer. Unless you are seriously F/I, you wouldn't stand a chance against a true AMG as most of them are pushing upwards of 350+ hp.

There are no engine change options for the benz.

MANY people have a benz and pay for the amg rims and usually get the AMG tag. THERE IS NO ENGINE CHANGES with the AMG badge.

Just for the record, I have a 2002 clk 55AMG and I would easily smoke any TL.

The TL is an amazing car but not in the league of a benz amg in any area. (of course the amg is basically 2.5 times more expensive)

Sorry to bust your bubble but.... I sold my CLK55 TRUE AMG and bought my 04TL. The guys on here are correct. The 430 is NOT an AMG. A lot of dealerships and owners simply put those ///AMG emblems on there to get suckers like your buddy to pony up more cash than necessary. The ONLY thing he has are the same body side skirts and the rims that come on the high performance models. HE DOES NOT HAVE AN AMG car. His CLK430 SHOULD have a 275 HP V8 motor in it. This means that he SHOULD have been signifiicantly quicker off the line and then SHOULD have easily been able to stay in front of you. Sounds to me like your buddy may have been REALLY taken. Try running his VIN through the carfax and see if it doesn't come back as a CLK320. There are people running scams on people by simply re-labeling a 320 as a 430 and adding the ///AMG bodywork/rims. Souds to me like you buddy has one of theose. If so, then yea, you should have run like that against him. My TRUE AMG was zero to sixty in 4.9. Trust me, only Z06's, M3's, M5's and WRX STI's could hang at all.

Hey! Glad to see you ended up with a new TL!

I don't know if you remember but made you an offer on your CLK55. I had a C32 at the time.

I ended up keeping my NSX and buying the TL as my client car.

AMG cars are noted with only 2 digits that tells you its engine's displacement like SL 55 AMG, CL 55 AMG, or SL 65 AMG. Also notice how the AMG engines all end with 5 except for 3L displacement engines which are few like C 32 AMG (which is going to change with the new SLK 35 AMG), and notice that there is no AMG engine for their 4L displacement 8 cylinder engines. But even if you cant visually notice if its an AMG then listen for a supercharger, which is why they are AMG engines.

So its understandable that a TL beats the CLK 430, since its such a heavy car even though it has a little more HP and Torque, but power-to-weight ratio is most likely better on the TL.

 

James - Yep. I remember. Good to see you over here as well. I did sell the 55 for the number I was trying to get in the end. It went to a guy that sells credit card services in Lousville, KY in December. Picked up my TL the next day. You will like the TL. Makes for a nice "client" car. Seats 4 comfortably and loks nicer IMHO than the G35's. It does have a little pep so it can be driven hard enough. It's not going to outrun any of the performance cars but that's not really the reason for the car. In all, I am happy with it. The Bluetooth support alone is worth it for me...

 

Two corrections:

1) There's no such thing as an SLK35. The C32 is being replaced w/ the C55. AND the SLK32 is being replaced w/ the SLK55 (both 5.5L n/a v8's).

2) Not all AMG engines are supercharged (see above).

 

Acutally that is exactly what a CLK 430 AMG is. It does have the wheels, kit, steering wheel.

And I do see a TL beating or at least matching a CLK 430.

 

sorry to get off topic a lil..i just found this thread really interesting..i learned a lot about these AMGs and shit just from reading here.

How will 2002 TL-S fare w/ the so called "AMGs"..i see the CLK AMG's everywhere where i live..and i never try to pull shit with them cuz i always thought they all had those mean ass engines. Say like..the CLK's and C models..how do the TL-S's fare with theM?

TL-S vs CLK 430 is about even until about 100mph. That is where the extra displacement of a V-8 comes in and pulls. Both are swift cars and low to mid 6 second cars.

 

If the Benz or AMG has been massaged by Renntech here in Lake Park Florida FOGET ABOUT IT! do not attempt, he will smoke you in neutral! Those people are very serious about cars and not your typical "speed" shop.

 

I just hate getting smoked in neutral...

The TL (even the 6MT) will get killed by the CLK55, the C32, the E55, etc. Any true AMG will walk away from us, even with a half-ass driver. They are very very fast.

The CLK430 is a very close race, if you are a better driver than the driver in the Benz you might be able to pull on him.

all you have to do is check the engine and see if its a v6 or v8 the 320 is a v6 and the 430 is a v8. and if its an AMG which iam sure its not it would say AMG along side the engine.

 

its a v8...and the engine isnt AMG...but like the body, rims, etc are...but its a 430 for sure

 

I thought they offered a CLK430 with AMG suspension package or something. In terms of visual looks, the CLK430 and CLK55 look identical minus the dual tips the 55 has from the exterior. Even the wheels are the same.
