Just got brakes done - 6mt
Heya Folks,
Haven't posted in a while, but have been keeping up reading.
My '04 6mt TL just passed 50k. I must say I am really impressed with the car up to this point. Sure it has a few rattles and issues, but my '99 E36 M3 was in the shop more.
TO MY SUBJECT: I just had all 4 replaced with EBC YellowStuff pads ($120/$70), Brembo front blanks ($80/pr) and EBC Rear blanks ($50/pr). I thought this was a great price considering the dealer wanted $200-$250 per front rotor LOL!!! My first impression is that these have a good deal of bite. I have to take it easy on them for the first 100-300 miles due to bedding-in.
I also changed the brake fluid and the MTF with Amsoil Synchromesh MTF (again) Shifts are like butter now (again)
I chose not to follow my MID, since I am a worrier. She will be paid off in May and I have NEVER had a car this long before. I plan on going without a car payment for a while to see what Acura has to offer at the end of this year or next. If the new design looks like a Camry (new TSX The front grills are looking baaaahhhddd), I am headed back to a BMW 330 or Infiniti G35/G37.
I will let you know how the EBC Yellows do as time goes on.
Take care,
miiipilot

This is the quote from where I got them from:
9. Bedding in EBC pads
In Street use situations …
Bedding in when the yellow EBC surface coating (marked on the pads as Brake In) is applied.
Best procedure is to drive gently avoiding harsh braking unless in an emergency for first 100 miles. In the second 100 miles (up to 200) you can use gently increasing brake pressures when using the brakes.
Only after 200 miles urban driving (not 200 miles on a freeway where brakes are almost unused) should you attempt to apply heavy load and heat to the brakes. To do this final bedding on a QUIET ROAD in safe traffic apply the brakes and slow from 60 to 10 MPH five times in a row. Then drive slowly for a few minutes if safe to do so to allow the brakes to cool. Try to avoid coming to a rest whilst the brakes are heated.
A smell may be noticed from the warm brakes, this is normal. Repeat this procedure a second time after the brakes have TOTALLY cooled down. EBC pads get better with miles. Even after this bed in procedure it can take up to 1500 miles before the pads are at their best. In the meantime the pads will be good and safe but true potential not realized. EBC makes performance pads that last, they do not bed in within 5 minutes driving. Noises will be more likely during the first 1000-1500 miles use whilst this chemical bedding takes place.
I am just following the directions based on what EBC says here.

Trance, I was looking into the REDs first, but the REDs are a PROGRESSIVE pad. You need to get heat into them before they get to their full potential. The YELLOWs have great initial bite and have a higher operating temperature range. They are track use also :-)

Southern,
I respect your POV. I have heard of many different ways to bed-in pads too. These were just the instructions that came with the pads.

The breakin process is pretty much exactly what was described and can frequently be found in new car owner's manuals. The bedding in process is far more aggressive in that it requires just the opposite treatment of the pads when new in order to do three things: 1) Gas out the pads. 2) Force the pads to take on the characteristics of the rotors. 3) Transfer pad material to the rotor surface.
Let me ask you.. did you get new rotors with your brake job or did you have them turned?

Southern,
I replaced all 4 pads and rotors. I got BREMBO front blanks and EBC rear blanks. I thought I got them for a reasonable price too. Best on the web. I searched for replacement brakes for 2 years, YES 2!!!! My '03.5 G35 coupe 6mt had BREMBOs all around and I had them replaced at 14000 miles. So I started looking early since I thought I would need them. I can't believe they lasted 50k. The rears actually wore more than the fronts WIERD.
Trance, I will give you an update once I can get them working well. We are having a NASTY snowstorm atm.

Can you say where you got your rotors from?
Those are great prices ($80/pair for Brembo front 6MT rotors).

Looked very bad
I just wanted to replace everything without having to worry. They were very very rusty. In fact my repair shop actually broke the rear backing plate just to get to rotors off. They didnt charge me for it too
They also told me that the front right bleeder valve on the calipers was stripped where they could barely complete the fluid change They said they couldn't fully open it and didn't want to be too rough b/c they didn't want to break it off
This is the 3rd winter it has been through in Cleveland. So I wasnt completely shocked at the condition of the rotors.
Now we have 10"-20" inches of snow on the ground. A few cities had a level 3 snow warning. You could be subject to arrest if deemed appropriate. Ashtabula county was under a state of emergency. Many sections of freeways were closed. BUT I will get those bedded in right and give you all an update once I can actually enjoy driving again.
I swear I'm gonna burn out my clutch trying to get my ass unstuck on the main roads, on-ramps, parking lots, my friggen driveway. My job forces me to work and calling off is NOT AN OPTION.
Rant over,

Just a warning: these pads have a tendency to squeal a little during low speed stops. Install these on resurfaced (or new) rotors with correct lubrication to minimize noise.
