the the OP: you could of went a lot farther than that...about another 50 miles safely judging by ur needle, driving like that you could go for another 80 miles after the range says 0, trust me i have done it (i have ran out of gas a few times too) lol

Thats not good for the car.
I try to not even let the light go on or drive with the light on as less as possible. Dont want the filter to start sucking up the junk in the gas tank.

^^that don't make sence, if there's junk at the bottom it would get sucked up regardless of how much fuel you have in the tank...
by that logic after driving your car for 5 years your whole gas tank wud be filled with junk.

The problem with this thread is that it's all misleading. I mean, I could probably "win" this July when I drive to Maine if I fill the tank right before getting on the Beltway (as I intend to do) and then leave it in 6th gear as much as possible for the duration of the drive. I know I can go 400 miles without filling up if I'm just on the highway because I've done it before (gone from home to Exit 4 on the Northway north of Albany, just over 400 miles, and could have gone further). But I hardly ever get to do that sort of highway driving. I get more like 19 mpg in the daily stop-and-roll grind around DC.
The other thing that's misleading is that nobody will ever stretch it to the farthest possible point before stopping to refuel. If I'm on the highway in an area I don't know and my yellow light is on, I'm going to stop for gas. While I could rely on the Navi to find me a station, I don't necessarily want to risk the possibility that the station the Navi lists may have closed. I'm more likely to rely on the blue signs on the highway. (Even more so if I'm somewhere with no Navi coverage, like most of Nova Scotia.)

^^rules were how much you can get from a full tank of gas, not how much mpg you cud get for 15 minutes in 17 miles lol.
i don't have a picture, but i've gotten 24mpg on a tank of gas highway driving, average speed over 100mph and total distance about 420 miles.

Not to mention, if I reset at any point, the #'s would be off. If you take the mileage on the odometer and divide by the amount of fuel, you will see that it comes out to 27.797. When rounded up is ... drum role... 28. Everything matches up!! Wow, math is great!!
BTW, I never go below "Range 0". I may get into the teens, but never 0.

The most miles I've been able to get on one tank was 450. I could have gone probably 30 more miles (from past times that i've gone below 0 by more than this), but there aren't many gas stations in Bar Harbor Maine.
Driving a stick shift I believe helps. I tend to get 36-37 if I drive 60 and fill up with 93. If I use 87 I tend to get 30-31.
I don't see how Black_05's is real. I've never averaged 28 for a trip and been able to get 433 miles, especially not with 49 on the range left. If I have 49 left, no way I put in 15 gallons either, never. With 49 left I would put in 13.1 give or take a third of a gallon.

I stretched mine to 455 miles on July 31 and definitely could have gone further, as I put in 14.042 gallons. But I was in an area I didn't know, knew I would hit traffic in the near future, and saw a gas station with a semi-reasonable price (annoyingly, however, the pump shut off at $50.00 and I had to re-insert my credit card and restart). I easily could have reached 480 to 490 miles before I definitely would have had to refuel due to heading down a road with no gas stations.
But I forgot to take a picture of the MID, which said I had averaged 31 mpg at 60 mph over 455 miles in 7 hours 29 minutes of driving.
Based on that experience, I could see going 545 miles if it were all highway driving with no backups, traffic jams, slow periods, construction, etc. (I hit two significant jams in my 455-mile run). But I can't imagine going 545 miles on a tank at such a slow speed. It would have to be at 60 mph or above just to be able to use 6th gear.

Interesting thread. I have a 2006 RL. It has a J35 engine...hehehehe.....so it's technically close to topic...
I track my mileage religiously. The most miles I've gotten out of a tank on my RL is 481.5 miles on 5/24/08, while driving west to Colorado. Only 24.3 mpg, though. I could manage that distance because the RL has a 19.3 gallon tank, a gallon more than the TL. AC was on and I was driving 85-90 mph.
Just so you know, RLs CAN hit 28-30 mpg, but only with moderate, granny-level driving with the AC off and on a trip that is 100% freeway.
That's one of the things I miss about my 2004 TL....32 mpg on the same trip....

32.56 average over 510 miles. I don't have a trip computer to calculate it so I have to do it the accurate way, fill the tank, run it dry and see how many gallons it takes to fill it back up, then divide the miles travelled by the gallons to fill up. Here's the results......

I have some pictures around here somewhere of >50mpg for 26 miles but nothing close to that for an entire tank. 30 freeway and 15 city is the norm since the girlfriend started driving occasionally.

technically the hole where fuel is sucked from is at the bottom of the tank...but even if it's not then there's no way it'll suck up junk at the bottom of the tank cuz it wudn't be there...so junk will always stay there...logical

91 Octane(No ethanol blend)
not the best i've gotten but since I went on a little road trip to KC this last weekend I decided keep up with the MPGs.
on a slightly unrelated note has anyone compared blended to non blended gasoline? on this trip I had to get the ethanol crap for the tank up there and noticed I couldn't get over 29MPGs, the MID reading was skewed from that tank since the trip we went on was to a concert and we sat in traffic for about 3 hours total bringing it way down. So i'm not positive it had an effect but it seemed to with just highway driving, besides the ill affects it has on rubber and all the other issues i've heard about. The main reason i'm kinda forced into getting the blended stuff is cause I have a Phillips-Conoco card that is paid for by my company and i've found that very few exist in OK that sell no ethanol gas, which didn't seem to be the case in KC.

Awe man! Should have had this thread a long time ago. In November of '06 (car is 2 months old) I drove from overland park, KS to Eden Prairie, MN on a single tank of gas (454 miles). I got 35 to 33 mpg to De Moines and then by the time I filled up with gas 1 mile from my destination I was at 32 mpg. The Miles to empty turned to zero as I pulled into the pump so I did the trip with 14.5 gallons of gas.
That was the only time I did it. Now with all the mods, I get about 28 mpg on the highway.

i got ~400 on the trip back from sf to la. 5 hour drive w/ 3 ppl in the car. Too bad i didn't get a pic tho. Almost empty light went off and when I got home I still had a range of 20miles or so.
