I was on the highway today and I hit a bolt laying in the road (probably put there by BOLT James!) at 70mph. Sucked! This damn thing went through my tire and rim. I still have the stock 17" rims which is kind of shitty but now I have them AND a donut! Anyone know if the dealership will sell me just one rim? I've been searching around for rims for a while but I haven't seen anything that really thrilled me. Also since I need a new tire what's a good tire to get? I'm tired of the EL-42's. I think people said Michelin pilot something or other was really good. Anyway, the point of my thread now. I jacked up the car and took off the flat but then I couldn't get the spare on. I had the jack all the way up and I still couldn't get it on. Unfortunately, I was partly on grass so that probably had something to do with it but the jack just wasn't big enough to do the job. I was stuck out there for over an hour until the truck came with their jack and got me up high enough to put the donut on. Moral of the story you might want to consider getting a bigger jack. I know if I was reading this thread and this didn't happen to me I'd probably blow it off but let me tell you when you're stuck on the highway and it starts to rain and you're shit out of luck because your jack wasn't big enough please PM me so I can register you into my club.

i just did my first road trip tire change on my 03-S on its 1 year birth-delivery day and i was not pleased on the mini-type sissors jack. it took forever to get the wheel to be changed on a flat surface and yes of course it was starting to rain, this car is about 1000 lbs. too heavy for this micro device to work with this lifting theory device. i have navi with onstar and i would rather do it my self instead of calling for help. for a woman or a person that has no arm power, i would strongy advise them to get road service, lucky for me that the next exit had an old time small town tire repair shop, they patched my Michelin pilot (if they were a michelin store they would have sold me a new tire) and put the small donut back in the trunk.. $17.21 and i am back to the interstate (palmetto fl. 1st. exit on I-275 skyway ((200 ft. high)) bridge south of tampa bay famous for dramanic suicides, if your warranty is out and the transmission is starting to go , you must see this bridge !!!!!!

 

The Michelins you are referring to are "Michelin Pilot A/S". These are all season and run around $190/tire at Tirerack.

 

I am a lawyer in Toronto and a big chunk of my practice is motor vehicle claims. I have seen too many people get creamed changing tires. About 10 or 15 years ago one of he top litigation lawyers in Toronto was killed in such a mishap. What seems to happen is that people passing disabled vehicles where people are doing something interesting like changing their tires focus on what they see and just drive right into the disabled vehicle. It is almost like moths to a flame. Most tow truck drivers park their trucks behind a car needing a tire change to offer themselves some protection from just such occurrences.

I would strongly recommend taking advantage of the Acura Roadside Assistance instead of trying to change a tire yourself. In fact, if your car is disable on the side of a busy highway I would try and put some distance between the people in your car and the edge of the highway while you are waiting for the tow truck.

This advice may sound like it is coming from Chicken Little but the injuries I see involving people standing around cars on highways are horrific.

This is absolutely true. One of the first things you'll learn at something like a Skip Barber driving school is always look where you want the car to go because there is a tendency to steer in that direction.

If you look where you don't want to go, you run the risk of steering there especially in an emergency situation where your cognitive functions aren't working as consciously as they would otherwise.
