I'm stuck in Houston and can't siphon gas from my tank!

There must be some sort of screen or barrier beyond the vapor flap that is blocking entry into the tank, probably in an effort to prevent siphoning. The tube isn't even wet when I pull it out. Is this standard on newer cars? Time is an issue here...any help please!

I'm not jamming a screwdriver into the tank either!

I tried that for my moped on my dads old 97 taurus, it had a gaurd, I imagine the TL does too. Your best bet would probably be to use a small(think fish tank air hose) tube, it will take a while, but should get by whatever screen they have, unless its window screen, than your screwed? Why do you need to siphon gas? Once you get it out, what are you gonna do with it. If you have enough gas that you can go siphoning I say drive the hell away.

I'm confused. Why do you want to siphon gas from your tank?

Is your reasoning that gas is so expensiveif your car gets wrecked in reida you won't have to worry about insurance covering the gas?

Sorry, mods feel free to merge.

If the above was true, are all the gas stations closed already, or did you just go bankrupt?

news said many stations out of gas already

maybe he wants to make 1 full tank from 2 half tanks

considering I heard 1 guy went 20mi in 9hours I can see someone considering making 1 full from 2 half tanks

and we all know a TL in stop stop go traffic - gas mileage sucks

Thanks guys...originally I wanted to put my GF's tank 2002TL in mine (NAVI). Unfortunately, little did I know, that didn't work due to the above problem. Next I wanted to take it from mine to store in gas cans for my friends Yukon. There are absolutely no gas stations with gas and we will be definitely traveling off the road for someways. Everytime a station gets a tank they run out in 30 min. They all have the pumps wrapped and even have people waiting there until the next truck decides to come... F*@k that! You can't even get to the station since your stuck in this crap either. I also don't want to drive the 6MT off road, even with the navi and in gridlock like this. We also have a lot of crap to bring, its hot, and we will be running the A/C as little as we can.

Anyways thanks for the help everyone...I have to split.

maybe the last projected track - closer to tx/la border will spare u the brunt of the storm in houston - but who knows about the rainfall amount (only took a tropical storm b4 for flooding)

forget the tl doing any offroading

be safe and leave anyway - good luck

ck out some the traffic cams in houston:

http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/cameras/

u can hear the traffic on xm 226 for Houston

- people running out of gas on the highway, just because u find a station - doesn't mean u will find gas, curfews in some areas

I know at least since '99, you cannot get past a screen in Honda products to siphon gas.

I think it would be fun to drive througha hurricane off road in a nice durable suv like a yukon, but then again it takes a lot to get me going(I found white water rafting boring).

I also would not mind waiting out a storm if I new my house could take it(my dream house has an iron frame).

Where are you storing the TL? I would be worried about a shed collapsing on it but I wouldn't want to leave it exposed either.

If there is a line for the gas pumps I would get in, after buying tons of cans from HD(the 5 gallon ones, or 55 drums) and fill them all up. Easier than syphoning.

Dave,

Be safe. My prayers for you, your family, friends and community. Those of use who have lived through castastrophe can certainly distance the value of life over property.

Now, for those who may not have 1st hand respect for the danger of these storms you can at least witness the effect via the vast information and visuals afforded to us by the media.

If you cannot comprehend an entire casino swept inland and settling atop a hotel, entire towns leveled, hundreds of people drowned and land masses changed in hours, I am sure a durable Yukon or steel frame home will due just fine.

???? WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU ????????

Wait until you have a mortgage, multiple kids(which you are responsible for), a job, a car payment YOU have to pay.... Your 1st purchase when you grow up and have REAL responsibility should be to buy a hefty LIFE INSURANCE policy to protect those you love.. Especially if it "takes a lot to get you going"..

Please think of those in danger down south who may not want to be in a Yukon when a 175 MPH hurricane slams into their town before you start typing this jibberish. Not everyone thinks the impending possibility of death is "cool" or "fun".

New orleans was a different situation(not trying to start a flame war), TX doesnt have levis that will flood entires city if there is a little too much rain. I too wish you luck, but I say sincerly that if somone gave me an amphibious vehicle I would be right out there with you guys(and maybe a few days off of school. I say if you have family, get them out, but theres nothing wrong with trying to ride out a storm(if it doesnt put the lives of others in danger).

Houston floods if it rains 3 inches in an hour ... it is so close to sea level, and some parts of it are UNDER sea level. And a storm surge up the Ship Channel will flow over a lot of land area, much like the dikes in N.O. True it will drain faster, but that's little consolation if your stuff is submerged.

Dave, my prayers are with you and all of the other folks that are trying to get away from the hurricane. I lived in Houston for 7 years and know about the traffic problem during any given normal day. Keep us updated and I hope that everything will work out for you.

Well, I finally got gas, but I am in north Houston... it will not be good as the storm surge will put a lot of the coast line under water... Galveston island is predicted to have half under water..

The worst I have heard about traffic is people are pushing their cars the few feet when something moves so they can save gas... One guy AVERAGED 2 MPH over a 12 hour period.

It is close to 10 PM and the highways are still full... going on 30 plus hours with people on the freeway..

Will let people know what happens in a few days...

I wish you luck, I too am a houston resident. we saw what was happening on the highways and decided that the risk of being caught in the open worse than staying in our house in NW Houston. talk about tough decisions. so we sit here and hope that things work out...

As for MJB: I understand your ignorance, I was once a child and had my parents to worry for me. I now have children and have to worry about/for them. Please, just keep quiet about things that you really don't understand yet. people's nerves are on edge here, and they really don't want to hear it.

Dude, I wish you luck. That doesn't change the fact that I am a nieve adrenaline junky, which has resulted in my hospitalization over 10 times. I am not saying hurricanes are good, as they arent, but when there is nor easter(I know it doesnt compare with a cat 5, or even 2) I find it entertaining to drive around. You guys are ALL wiser than me, so unless its pertaining to cars, don' take my advice.

On the other hand, where do you plan to keep your TL. Do you have a good place to lock it up and protect it from the elements? Are you insured for that type of storm. I wish you luck and safety, along with the well being of your car.

DAveSPEC, I hope you got to where you were going. It looked terrible out there..

Crazymjb, I figure nothing short of death will get you to grow up. Hurricanes are not to be messed with. I doubt you'd survive 30 sec in a cat 4.

I was born and raised in Galveston. So were my parents and grandparents. They are up here with me now in Austin. I know what it's like to go through a cat 3 and my family said never again. I have never been so scared. My parents house sits a quarter mile from the beach just barely behind the 17 ft seawall. It was a night I will never forget and I was 8 at the time. We were lucky and had very little damage to our house. However, I can't imagine staying behind for this one.

Eventhough it looks like Galveston may escape a direct hit, there will still be 7 people in my house who will get little sleep tonight worrying about our hometown and what will be the aftermath of this. Galveston has a lot of history and I couldn't bear to see it all destroyed. Much less think about how my 85 year old grandparents would have to start over from scratch. Please get some perspective and quit thinking only of yourself.

No one takes your advice about cars, either. You know squat.

And who cares about the TL? A strong category 4 or category 5 hurricane is going to do some damage to Houston - that TL can be replaced with an indentical car. What's important is that he, and the people he loves, gets out of the way - even if that means plowing cornfields with the TL or leaving it behind to be swept away... it is just a car that has no feelings.

according to cnn, houston is the 4th largest city in the US, with about 5 million residents. that's a lot of people to move out in such short notice.

i don't think i've ever recalled a summer with as many nationally reported hurricane evacuations as this summer.

if it's not hurricanes, it's snow storms or blackouts or earthquakes. unpredictable...

i loved texas when i was there for a road trip a few years back (san antonio -> el paso). people are friendly, polite, etc. people will help each other out...

One thing I said is I would rather it not happen, but I don't mind storms(I have been on anti anxiety medicine, so I am not bothered by too much, got one guy pissed off enough to come after me).

I do care about the city, but you can't really move a city, a car you can get out of the way, and this is the acura forum, not the ramblings section.

TLEXTREME, our you serious about gettin your dad out, I hope hes ok, but hospitals are like fortresses, as long as they have power and utilities he should be fine.

03coupeV6, glad you care. I must say that I do know a fair bit about cars, it is just because you dont care about labels and I do that you got all angry with me.

To set the record straight, I wish the best for texas the town and residents, am curious about the TL, and I do like storms(there are storm chasers, I would not mind being a storm chaser if it paid better).

I did not intend to be offensive and apologize if you took my remarks as so.

Shit really? If it was a detonation and not just a fire I would find it likely to be a terrorist attack. Diesel is not incredably expolosive, and it would definatly be known if enough of the fumes built up to cause an explosition.

I think they took the Yukon so they could drive on the sholder, or through some fields.

P.S, my age has always been displayed on the side.
