most of those phones that are sold before release dates use beta versions of the software and will expire at a certain date. once they expire the phone may not be usable until a patch is available and that's usually when the phones are finally released, a couple of months after release or worse - there is no patch. and the funny thing is people actually buy them 2-3 times more than their sell price when they hit the stores
