I Own a Panasonic E30 DVD Recorder, So Can I.....

.....burn a DVD-A compatible disc?

I know I can record 6 hours of just audio tracks via good ol' L / R RCA jacks and/or the optical input and burn them onto a DVD-R.

Anyone know if this would physically be able to play on the TL's system?

I'm trying to get my MP3 collection into the changer obviously, and with the 6 disc changer holding 36 hours, that's about 540 songs right there.

Any clue if this would work before I go through the effort of manually recording in real time (ugh)?

TIA

No clue, but could you just burn 1-2 songs onto a DVD-r or -rw and see if it will play? Just a thought.

On page 130 of the manual (there, I've said it again) it says you can't play DVD-R/RW, MP3 or WMA formats. If you use a DVD/RW disc, you can always use it again if it doesn't work (which the manual says no, but what the heck?).

Right, but that's "minus" R and "minus" RW.....doesn't say anything about "plus" R and "plus" RW.

Additionally, it refers to "formats". The traditional DVD-R/W 'format' is for video. If I can record the thing the way I think I might, it would be recording in the DVD-A format (albeit on a DVD-R disc) which it could read as long as it was PCS stereo (again, adminable on my E30 recorder).

I guess when I get the car I'll give it a shot. Anyone get that Discwelder product to work yet? If so, there's a $99 solution due this month:

The quick answer to your question is: Probably yes, but not quite yet.

svtmike has already tested the TL player to be able to read DVD-Rs (I believe it was DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs ... it was one of those two).

The problem lies in the DVD-A burning software. There isn't much available yet for the general public. There is a package out there called Discwelder Steel that sells for roughly $500 that burns DVD-As. svtmike bought it, and it's working fine for him.

There's rumors of a stripped-down "Discwelder Chrome" that will sell for around $100 soon, but I don't know when.

You can get svtmike's info here.

Good Luck!

GotJazz- thanks! God, I did a search and read every thread but no one answered that simple question.

But one question that svtmike *didn't* answer was about the navigation of these DVD-A tracks in the TL. Let's say that we burn the max of 99 stereo tracks on a DVD-RW in the DVD-A format that the TL is fortunate enough to read.....will we see ID3 type info on the screen (artist, track name)? Will we be able to navigate through folders (artist, album, track)?

Let me know if you know, and thanks again!

You might want to PM svtmike on that.

I think that DiscWelder Steel supports that, but I don't think that DiscWelder Chrome will. I think that DiscWelder Chrome will basically just support the audio recording and separating the tracks.

svtmike will be a better source, though. I'm just guessing.

The question by boltjames was if he could burn a DVD-R on his E30 recorder and it would work on the TL. The E30 will not do +R, so it is still incompatible, unless he gets another DVD recorder, or one of the packages mentioned above. The replies following mine were much more detailed and informative than mine, which is good, but I still believe he cannot burn a DVD-R disc on the E30 and play it on the TL DVD player.

Ron- yeah, I believe you're right after I read svtmike's posts kindly provided me by Mr. Jazz. Now, I'm onto the DiscWelder solution....

.....but, I'd love someone to confirm that the head unit has an aux input because if that's the case I'll just put a $5 wire between my iPod and the radio and be done with it. Until Alpine comes out with a harness for us, that is

why couldnt you just copy a dvd-a disk in a computer burner with the software thats out to copy commercial dvds? unless the dvd-a is double layer why wouldnt a straight clone work. I am not referring to making a dvd-a just copying one.

You can try, but the data encryption scheme will defeat you. The file structure of the disc you make will look correct, but the data will be incorrectly encrypted for the media you copy it to.

I've actually answered that one a couple of times. You get no more functionality in the TL than you get out of the display on the front panel of your home DVD/CD player - track number and time. Navigation is with next/prev track and cue/review just like on an audio CD.

Thanks svtmike.....if you don't mind, can you tell me if there are aux jacks on the back of the head unit so that I can just go RCA from my iPod without the need for a powered FM modulator spliced into the line?

TIA

I have no clue. I'm using home-made DVD-As so I don't need to bother with things like that!
