i just bought an 04 TL (wdp auto, navi&tech), and just the other day, i notice there are blue lights coming from the ceiling near the moonroof controls. what are these blue lights for? is there a switch to control them?

I think they like to call those blue or red LEDs "ambience lighting", whatever the hell that is supposed to mean in that context...

i seeeeeeee , i felt that my "ambience lighting"(footwell and light moonroof controls) wasnt enough and decided to get an led strip for my footwell, but then i got red leds in place of my dome and map lights and now my entire interior is lit up red and it even covers up most of the floor.

It is so sexy to look at during the night time.

i actually taped two small pieces of black cardboard to the holes inside the dome light housing to eliminate the "ambient" lighting, i like it much better at night not having it lit up

it's true, those led's always give me a "lazy one". On a serious note though, it's a nice touch. I was elated the first time I noticed them.

I always tell people its a finger print scanner and when I do they always put their fingers up to it - and when they do that I slyly press the voice command button for added effect

OP you can control the light intensity using the buttons on the left, behind the headlight stick, on the dash........

As other's have said, ambient lighting. A lot of luxury cars have it. My parents' Benzes have it only its an amber color and seems brighter.
