How many quarts does it take

Just did the first oil change on the TL at 3K. I was a bit surprised that I saw a lot of metal shavings on the oil filter, I guess this is normal and should not affect the engine at all..

Anyway, my question is, how many quarts do you guys put in your TL? The manual says 4.5 qts. but then it says total is 5.2 qts?

Does anyone know the exact amount we should be putting in... I put 4.5 just to be safe and it seems like it was just about right... But dunno if I should put in 5 qts...

I think it holds 5.2 quarts but they figure some of that does not come out when draining. So they say it is full with 4.5 quarts.

I use 4.5 quarts and Valvoline Max Life EP (.25 quarts).

It might be hard to related has we are on the metric system (Eh!).

I usually end up with 4.5 litres.

Here is what should be done during your oil change.

1 - Once the oil is drained, the drain plug re-installed and the new oil filter installed properly, pour in the 4.5 Quarts.

2 -Start the engine and check for oil leaks under the engine.

3 -Then stop the engine and after 30 seconds, check the oil level on the dipstick and top it off has needed to bring it between the 2 marks.

You'd be amazed at how many mechanics do not perform Step #2.

Also, as a warning to everyone, do not use an oil filter with a dent on it's outer shell.

A dent on the outer shell of a filter is a weakpoint that can develop into a crack that would result in a oil leak.

Every major filter manufacurer inspect their filters when they are coming off the assembly line and rejects dented filters but they do not control the handling of the filter during it's transport to your supplier.

It's always a good preventiove measure to inspect the oil filter before you install it. Check it for dents and make sure that the gasket is properly installed in it's groove. Never use a filter that did not come properly packaged (Boxed or sealed in plastic).

Best regards

Oil fill (including filter) for the '04 TL is 4.5 US quarts. This is clearly stated in the owner's manual and I would find it VERY hard to imagine it would be any different in the '05 and '06 models.

I put in exactly 4.5 quarts which brings the oil level to the proper line on the dipstick.

4.5 quarts for a oil and filter change (I think the 5.2quarts is the amount of oil needed to fill after a engine rebuild).

One extra thing to do is to also prefill the oil filter with oil before installation. Just pour into the hour wait a minute and repeat until the oil level is close to the top. That minimizes the amount of time before oil pressure builds up by having oil in the filter.
