How do I make my TL sound like this?
I like this rumble. The TL sounds too smooth. I know you can make it louder by replacing the mid muffler with a straight pipe but it still sounds too smooth.

That sounds like the Chevy 2.8/3.1/3.4 V6 family. I believe all modern V6s are even fire. Ignition firing order makes the largest difference besides odd or even fire.
The Pontiac in the video is 1-2-3-4-5-6
I believe the TL is 1-4-2-5-3-6

Buick V6: 1-6-5-4-3-2

Chevy 4.3- Same order as the Buick V6 and you can hear the similarity even though they're not related at all.

Just for fun, the old odd fire Buick V6 talk about rough. I think it has the same firing order as the even fire GN but it fires at 90-150-90 degree crank intervals instead of the smooth even fire 120 degree intervals. Totally different sound.

My personal preference is the low rumble of the American V6s.

To the big cam lope:

It would be very cool at idle. Wouldn't pass emissions though.

Damned! that's about all I can say.: pimpgrin:

I hate cars, after I read your posts I did a lot of googling of odd fire vs even fire and firing sequences. Very interesting stuff, it looks like there is even more that I didn't know about engines than I thought.
And everyone who's dissing my post sucks, that pontiac actually sounds better than a TL to everyone except you riceboys. I know the pontiac itself is not even a fraction as good as a TL, but it still sounds better. Most of the TLs I've heard on youtube with modified exhausts sound awful, usually very ricey and even worse than stock.

It may be slow as hell but I think the idle of the Pontiac sounds more intimidating than the TL. I'll guarantee if you did not know which exhaust was which and had to judge on which one sounds the meanest, it would be the Pontiac. TL lacks the rumble with any exhaust.

I like the start up of the TL with the MM delete and diff resonator but when they rev it without load...it sounds HORRIBLE.
I cant say that I like that Pontiac sound either.
I do like how Chevy V8's sound. Fords sound really good but they're mostly all bark and no bite.
After driving a challenger srt for a month, I enjoy the rumble of a v8 and and the sound at about 4-6k RPM at WOT

Being into performance cars (American muscle) and motorcycles (Japanese superbikes) for all of my life, I have experience with both. I view the TL's engine as a large motorcycle engine, not as a muscle-car engine. As such, I don't expect for the TL engine to thump and to have a rumble. Large cc superbikes don't thump and rumble.

Large cylinders usually have more rumble but not always. There are so many factors besides the big two (even/odd fire, firing order). Some non changable items for the TL are Ignition timing, bore/stroke ratio, heads, cams, etc. IMO, it sounds average at idle and low to mid rpms but doesn't start to sound good until high rpms.
It would be interesting to hear a true dual exhaust with X pipe and old school Flowmaster 2 chambers. That would probably make the TL sound deeper than anything on the market.
Even though they're not good for power, the 2 chamber Flowmasters will make anything sound awesome.
It's too bad ATR does not make exhausts anymore. I would love to try their mufflers on the TL. They have an extremely low rumble. When I fire the GN up, the dishes and cabinets rattle inside the house yet it's not that loud.
I'm probably going to start an exhaust project before long now that I have the suspension done. Going for near stock sounding, stock appearing system but with enough flow for 500hp. Going to make it quiet with no convertors in preparation for the turbo when the car's paid off in March.

I was wondering how much longer it would take before we wore you down with that turbo itch. Finally. I am so happy to hear this news. Whoop !
It's been getting too quiet around here on the forum lately. I have been tempted to start a nitrous methanol build progress thread just to liven things up a bit. I just am not looking forward to every know-it-all to ruin the thread with mis information. Undecided at this point about starting a thread.

Just my
Buy an ATLP quad exhaust
I have ATLP's J-pipe, 3rd cat delete, and catback (quads), and an AEM cold air intake.
My 07 TL S 6MT on the dyno:

I'll save my opinions about everything else, as I'm only trying to post open minded suggestions!

Ive ran my TL for a week with no mufflers. Sounds GREAT on WOT.. but drones like ass while cruising at 2-3k rpm.
So I installed a cutout & BAM! best of both worlds... No vids of mine yet. But here is an example.

Thats the closest you'll get to that sound. As most others have said, it has more to do with the motor rather than the exhaust. Personally I wish our TL's sounded like how old Acura Legends did, here is a video showing how the stromung exhausts sound on legend, same exhaust that the ATLP uses.

ATLP base, a year old

If sound is what you want then why not just do say the ATLP or RV6? These cars are a luxury sedan, not an LT1 or big V8. These cars weren't made to make tons of rumble and if you cut out everything then it's going to sound like a ricer gone worse! Why don't you do an experiment and try things for your self and see what you like.
Ive got a question for everyone, what would the car sound like if you cut the secondary cat, and basically did the RV6 true dual set up with a dynomax resonator and the stock mufflers?? Or say you went to a junk yard and found an M3's stock mufflers or an AMG's stock mufflers? My AMG's mufflers were the same shape as my TL-S and were quad tipped.

Yours did sound very good and especially for a free mod. I fired mine up with the 3rd cat removed and it did sound very good and deep. I almost wouldn't mind doing a cutout after the 3rd cat since mine's gutted anyway.
