How Bad Did I Get Hosed?

Just took my '04 in for its first "turn and cough" (A1 notice = oil change and tire rotation) at 6700 miles.

Dealer (Hinshaw's of Fife) charged me $59.95 including labor for those two items.

Did I get hosed?

That's a fair price for an A1 Service.

Oil change is typically $24.95 at the stealership. $35 for tire rotation? They could have done better but you didn't get hosed. Let's just say you paid full price!

Considering what some people have been charged for the A1 service, you got a decent price. $25 for oil change is good, $35 for tire rotation is fair. True, they could have done better, but dealers typically do not "do better" in this area, unless they are one of the few dealers we read about here that give you the first service, or several services, free, so I think they treated you fairly.

Only way to do it appreciably cheaper is "DIY", which is my chosen method.

I think you're good ... and the tire rotation will let you keep the wheels until at least 11,000 miles so you just made money off the deal.

The A1 is due when the car tells you its due.

you may have paid regular price! 24 or 25 isnt to bad for an oil change but 35 bucks to rotate tires is a total rip I know its the going rate, but jeez it takes me about 15 minutes to rotate my own tires. I'll keep my money in my pocket

"You have to be shitting me Pyle!"

Motorcars Acura in Cleveland is charging me $76.00 for the A1 service. I thought that was a tad outrageous UNTIL I called Acura of Cleveland...HOLY FUCK...They want $110.00 for A1 service. Oil change: $37 Balancing: $40 OK this i can deal with, but why is it $30+ to put the tires back in a different spot then you removed em. LOL

I understand how business works, but I think this is unreal. And to all you Naysayers out there...I know our cars are $35000, but it's OIL, Not Helix for Ferrari, just plain NON-synth oil...LOL.

And furthermore, they may add an alignment to my bill since my wheel is offcenter a little bit. I can't imagine what hidden cost they are gonna throw on. I dont feel I should pay for an alignment at 6000 miles in 4 months. My M3 and other Acuras didnt need em except 1x/year.

Any thoughts on the alignment issue? What did any of you guys pay for an alignment?

Thanks for letting me vent.

I agree....$35bucks for a tire rotation is outrageous...most tire dealers do it for free.

Why would they charge you for an alignment to correct an off-center wheel, or for any other reason, when the car is so new? I know they don't warranty alignments forever, but they do if they are to correct an initial problem which has not been fixed to your satisfaction.

Are you letting them charge you $76.00? You should find out how much an oil change is, and tell them that is all you want. You could also find out how much a tire rotation is, and see if the total comes up to $76, because A-1 is only oil change and tire rotation and they shouldn't charge you more for checking stuff they are supposed to check anyway.

It is up to the individual dealer. Not every one is so fortunate.

That's odd. I did my B1 service at Downey and they were one of the cheaper dealers in the area. The main reason I went there was their service department actually had openings, so I didn't have to wait a week to get it done. Tustin Acura is okay, also, but you definitely need to make an appointment in advance.

I'd say if you got a shellbacking with a firehose then then you got hosed pretty good , otherwise 60 bucks isn't bad. I hear paying $60 is better then a shellbacking

Heck if everyone is willing to pay $35, I'll rotate anyone's tires for $20 - I could use a second income!!

DIY - it is way too easy not to. Save the money for your kids, wife, girlfriend -or both .

I intend to save my $35 each time in a jar labled "Cause they probably messed-up my tranny while putting in Oil Jet Kit"

Well once my A-1 service comes up, I'll give my dealer a call to find out how much it will be. More than likely it will be a "DIY".

Depending on how you look at it...

By most dealer standards $59 isn't outragous for an oil change and tire rotation but consider this:

While the oil is draining and they are rotating the tires (or supposed to be at least) the clock is running on two jobs, but they are overlapping. So in effect you're getting double dipped if they're charging you labor for both an oil change and tire rotation.

The thing to look at is the labor time. See what the charged labor time is and compare it to their shop rate. I'd think this wouldn't be more than 15 minutes to do an oil change and rotate tires. Probably rounded to .3 of an hour (18 minutes). So say the the shop rate is $82/hr, thats 8.20/6 min (.1 hour) so the labor would be approximately $24.60 for 18 minutes.

If they double dipped, you'll see .3 for the oil change, .3 (maybe only .2) for the rotation and the labor would be ~$49.20. Add 6.00 (or more) for the filter, .50 (or more) for a drain washer and you're at $55.70. Depending on the oil cost probably $5.63 (or more) for 4.5 quarts of oil and you're at $61.32. Then tax (if any) and "environmental" fees and or materials.

Of course this estimate would vary depending on the shop rate in your area, I'm using rough numbers from around my neck of the woods to illustrate.

This is the reason I prefer to DIY simple stuff like a oil change or tire rotation. I can afford to use Mobil 1 and a good aftermarket filter and still save money over having the dealer do it. Plus no hassles with maybe loose or stripped drain plugs, interior dirt, etc. and I know what kind of oil went into the car - not the mystery stuff out of the bulk tank that every dealer uses.

My first service was free, I would be interested to see the page in the manual as well.

As far as I can see, there is nothing in the owners manual of US Acuras that states that any service is free. I've heard people from Canada saying that the sales brochure mentions free initial service or something like that, but I've never seen it myself. BTW...do they do anything else during the A service besides the oil change and tire rotation? I switched tires several months ago, and I get free rotations for the life of the tire and free balancing too. Switching tires was the best thing I did to this car...the stock HPT Crapstone tires were horrible. I'm running Michelin PS-2's now and they did wonders for my TL.
