How accurate should the outside temperature gauge be?

This is the first car I have ever owned that displayed outside temperature so I have nothing to compare it to. In the 40 degree range in the Chicago area, the TL says it is 4 to 8 degrees warmer than the display board on all banks I passed. I don't know the accuracy of banks, but they all pretty much agree with each other.

Is 4 to 8 degrees high normal for a typical car or can it be adjusted better?

Thanks in advance.

On my old trade-in Mazda Millenia it was pretty accurate - almost always displayed the correct temperature. Haven't had a chance to test the new TL's gauge yet, though.

You didn't say how fast you were passing the banks...could be aerodynamic heating!

Orange-man,

Mine has been 7-8 degrees off for the last 2 months, dealer tried adjusting, but it went from 8 degrees off to 7, I think they can do it closer, but they said next they will change the sensor.

Personally, I find it to be too far off, + / - 2 degrees is ok, I do think of this as a safety issues as I would like to know when the road is icing up.

We have had three other cars with a outside temp gauge (chevy and 2 bmw's) they were all + / - 1 degree from real temps.

Remember, to be accurate, the car must be moving (and for about 10 minutes) as engine heating will effect the probe is standing still and also, if in traffic, the heat from the other cars will increase the temps!

My IS-300 thermometer also read several degrees too high. I chalked it up to the temperature sensor being located under the hood where the air is slightly warmer than the ambient.

Do you mind showing us the page number? I miss that page.

I had my dealer hook up their PGM to lower 4 degree. Now, it's much better. Personally I prefer to having lower temp.

As long as you're moving your car, the temp gauge will start to reach the final number step by step, the longer driving could make it better reading.

But, it's just like the weight-meter, you have to adjust it to make accurate before starting to weight yourself.
