Holy Crap!!!

I have been driving my new TL for a week now. I only put on a little over 200 miles on it and am getting terrible gas mileage. I remember reading on this board about how people were seeing around 25 miles per gallon.

I think I can watch my gas gauge drop. It says I am getting 18 miles to the gallon and that is terrible.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Its new ... the mileage will increase ... plus the TL is HORRIBLE on short trip gas mileage. Should get better with age ... I got about 420 miles a tank on my laborday weekend trip!

Great news, I was wondering if it would get better as I break the car in. That makes me feel better. I appreciate it.

Same here.. I went on a 200 mile road trip (highway) and I got about 22 miles per gallon. I was hoping higher 20's for highway

I have just over a thousand miles on mine after a trip to Philadelphia and Atlantic City this past weekend. Got 18 and 19 mpg on the first two tanks driving around locally. Got 29 mpg on the highway on the trip this weekend. Being out of the break-in period helped because I was able to leave it in 6th for much of the trip.

What do you mean. I am well within the breakin period and I use 6th often??

I'm by no means an expert, but I've heard others on here say that you should try to vary the RPMs while driving on long trips during break-in. But if you do lots of stop-n-go driving, you should be fine, I would imagine.

A good guideline for break in is 1st oil change. After a couple oil changes is when the car is really starting to get broken in, but the Acura break in guideline is only 600 miles. I have 11.5K miles now and yes my mileage was horrible to start with too. With ALL highway driving taking it down to 0 miles to empty (40-60mi left) the 5AT TL could probably get 400+ miles. I would not be surprised if someone running to absolute empty on highway miles hit 500 for one tank. The flip side is, all city driving (which is me) produces around 250-300 a tank. I believe it has to do with the gearing, notice on both versions 4, 5, and 6 are very steep gears designed mainly for gas mileage.

A few factors would make this MPG varied to others.
  • New car with low mileage
  • City/Highway ratio
  • Big foot
  • Traffic conditions
  • Where you are, different cities get different results

I get 28-29 on the highway at approx. 75mph, but it drops to 17 around town with my 6mt. I've never seen a car that would get such great mpg on the highway, and drop so much in city driving. My other car only varies by 3mpg no matter where I drive. It's a Honda DelSol and usually averages 42 on the highway, and 38 or so around town.

Christ! How do you people drive? I got an estimated 31 MPG on a 6 hour trip. This was after break-in and I still haven't done my first oil change (computer hasn't prompted me yet)

That's exactly what I was getting at. I still used 6th during the breakin period, just not for long stretches--when I was on the highway I went back and forth from 6th to 5th. It just so happens that I wasn't on the highway much for about the first 530 miles; for the last 70 miles I did as I just described. Coming back from Atlantic City, though, I was pretty much in 6th all the way up the Atlantic City Expressway and then all the way once I got on the NJ Turnpike, except for going through the tolls that didn't have Express E-ZPass.

When I filled up the tank on Sunday, it said 20 miles to empty but it only took about 13.5 gallons, so there's some pretty good proof that it tries to idiot-proof that aspect of the MID. After refueling it said 468 miles to empty (based on the previous all-highway shot from Atlantic City to Columbia, Maryland).

I get 24 MPG for highway (70%), city (30%) with 5200 miles on the car.

Would you consider 55-63 mph city or highway? There's a little stop and go on my route, but not much, so I'm guessing average is 55 mph. It's not a freeway, but rather country highway to work, then 35 through town.

What should I be looking for in mpg's?

Hmmmm.....

Pointedly, I've only had the new TL one week, however, I've been very pleased with
the gas mileage average so far right off the bat. Very first tank of gas averaged
25.6 miles per gallon. The driving so far has been mostly (~65%) stop and go
interstate (no freeway here) and 35% stop and barely go city. This was over the
first 420 miles of driving. I don't know why some report low mileage, but as
I've said, my data points are few at the moment.

Dr. Joe

P.S. The above was calculated by hand and confirmed by the car display.

It depends on how often you have to stop. I think highway is associated with continuous movement more so than it is with a particular speed. You could be on a two-lane road with a 45 mph speed limit and, if you obey the speed limit but don't have to slow down much or stop for an hour, that's more in the nature of highway driving. For comparison's sake, part of my morning commute is on I-395 and definitely qualifies as city driving because there's a fair amount of stop and roll.

My mileage has never dropped below the mid 24's for around town, stop and go, to and from work driving. Not since the first tank I put in (dealer never gives a full tank).

Here's some info on my first formal mileage check, straight out of my logbook.

Dates: 7/29 - 8/1/04
Miles: 140.8
Gals: 5.386
MPG: 26.142

"Warm to hot summer days, A/C used more than half the time. Work, around area, normal driving w/gear changes for break-in. Miles in the area of 700-850."

My around town driving is in my home town and surrounds, plus Manassas, VA. My to and from work takes my into and out of just outside of Centreville, VA, going through Manassas both ways (not route 66).

Lately, I've been getting around 27 MPG in the same conditions and I suspect it will be more with my next check since I just switched to Mobil 1 at my first oil change last Saturday. The car has a little over 2900 miles at this time.

I am getting bad gas mileage as well. I think it has something to do with stomping on the gas pedal everytime I get the chance. By the way, is there any kind of spacer I can put between the gas pedal and the floorboard to prevent me from doing this (I have no self-control).

how much gas is left after the listed milage on the trip computer (when the light is on).
for example the trip computer displays the milage left until empty....is there gas still in the tank after that milage turns over to 0 with the light still on?
