Hit and Run...Touch up paint?

Just got a black '04 TL a few weeks ago to replace a G35 and have had minimal issues.. Went to go talk to a neighbor just now and walking back up to my house I noticed a horrible scratch on my passenger side rear bumper..WOW it's probably a 3x1ft scrape..I assume it's from someone pulling out from a parking spot because I parked it in a public spot downtown tonight near some popular bars.

It's definitely gone through the clear coat so there's no way to take it back to 100%. However, what are my options? I was thinking of just sanding it down and putting some touch up paint over it and then just going over it with a PC and buffing/polishing it until it looks as good as I can get it..

What are my options? Should I just take it to a body shop? I'd hate to have to just get a new bumper but that's the obvious best way to do it..the scratch actually goes a little bit outside the bumper, even.

If its touch-up paint, you can go to the auto parts store and they usually have touch-up paint locked up & they go by the manufacturers paint code & if they don't have the exact paint code they will probably match it with Honda' similar color.

Had some other people look at it and they said it seems like the white scuffs could actually be paint from the other car.. what are my options?

Touch up paint isn't going to help you out. Fix it the right way. You'll thank yourself later.

If it really is white paint, then you're in luck. Take it to a detailer. If its not white paint then have the bumper repainted. Can't cost more than $250 or so.

Lol if u want touch-up that's going to be a lot of touching up. Looks pretty aggressive, your fortunate your bumper was not damaged besides paint. It looks like it could be buffed out?

take a fingernail and try scraping a tiny bit off. If it comes off, try having it buffed out.

Dodged a bullet on that one! That's exactly what I did this morning and then I spent a couple hours very lightly buffing it until it was about 80% back to where it was before. I can tell it went through the clear coat in some parts but it is MUCH better now than it was before. I'll take pictures sometime soon to show the difference.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

Yeah, some polish, claybar, and elbow grease will get that out mostly.

That really sucks. You might be able to buff most of that out.

i like how u understand that your paint job will never match your car's color 100%. thats like the key to this whole thread. this is when a NBP TL comes in handy cuz black is black and it will always match.

You are in luck my friend! That is simply paint transfer from the other car and your paint is really uneffected!!!!

Go out and buy a Mothers clay bar kit, some meguires gold class car wash and some scratch remover like Meguires Scratch X.

soak the area by spraying a mixture of the gold class and some water. Then use the clay bar to remove the paint transfer. (think of the clay as shaving, the water/gold class is the shaving creme and the clay is the razor blade). Spray the surface WELL and simply rub! Cut the bar into a manageable piece and use that. If you drop it THROW IT OUT! it's going to be slow but it's going to work well.

Remove all the paint slowly and then follow up with some scratch-x. Claying won't hurt your car at all and in fact will help clean the paint to make it nice and smooth. Many detailers use this before polishing to insure the paint is perfectly clean of waxes and other debris!
