High Mileage 05 TL - please advise

I'm looking to buy an 05 TL 6mt no nav with 110k this week and it is listed for 11,900. All the maintenance has been done except the timing belt, which they are willing to do before I make the purchase. They are also willing to pay off my car so the price of the TL isn't an issue. My question is, what types of things, issues, or problems should I be concerned about? What questions should I be asking the salesman in regards to the car? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a car with that much mileage. Ive seen same year TLs with Navi and half the mileage for $14K.

Sorrry, but what do you think they do with cars when they approach 100,000 miles, junk them?

The car is just broken in at that mileage. I've owned many cars with 200/300,000 miles and they were still fine as long as you keep up with the maintenance. My daughter’s Maxima that she purchased new, and presently has 180,000 miles, no problems. Over the years, a couple of CV boots, starter and alternator and it has been good to go.

On the 6MT TL, the KBB suggested retail in excellent condition is $13,985. Make certain that when they do the timing belt they replace all the components, not just the belt. With the 6 MT make certain trans. syncros are fine, no shifting problems or grinding, and that the clutch is operating properly.

If the TL is the one at Radley, all service/maintenance was performed at that dealership and the car looks great.

Good luck

I said I wouldn't buy one with that much mileage. I don't know how the car was maintained or NOT maintained by the previous owner or the dealer.. That's my biggest issue so I stay away and rather go with a new car or one with less mileage. Just my $.02 cents.

Yes, this is the one at Radley. I plan to go test drive today after work.

If you look at the CarFax report, it was serviced it's entire life at Radley, and I do agree with you, I'd rather purchase a new car, but rather than spending $35,000 new, I think a perfectly good deal could be had at the $11,900 price tag.

A car is the worst investment possible, as a $34,000 '05 Acura TL in excellent condition with 50K miles is worth a whopping $14,000 on trade-in, or $16,500 private, $20,000 loss. If the car in question is as good as it looks and can be had for $11,000 with the timing belt replacement, he certainly has some money to play with in case a repair pops up.

Once again, my

People here think that because a car has 110k is no good. i have my Tl 04 bought it with 130k for 9.5k (including about 8k mods light entire front 08 type S, apec types kit, supenstion and shock, and g37 19" infinity wheels, + more). My friend has a 06 with 42k and he cannot believe that my car drive hell alot better and in better condition than his.

Go see and test drive the car, if it is in great condition buy it. don't go by miles go by the condition of the car. My brother has a civis SI 2009 with only 13k and his hobbit is burning tires whiles holding the emergency brake all the day long. showing he skill everywhere. At 30k miles that car will need a lot of new parts and might has well need a new engine for all the miss shift. He said that when it start to give it the first sign of problem he will sell it. My other friend has a 350z with 32k and i cannot believe such a brand new car is in such bad condition. The engine is already burning oil and smoking from the exaust.

My first car was in an auction (honda accord 94 lx) with 237k. i used the car for 3 years never gave me a problem NEVER. was only changing oil and driving it. i never even replace the timing belt or water pump. sold it at 291k for $6000 in 2001 cause it was in such a great condition even with the super high miles.

then i bought a 2003 RXS type S with ONLY 1,200K but the car had already engine problems, it seems the previews owner put some kind of liquid in the engine and the engine needed to be fix or replace. i fought with the dealer and they took the car back, gave my money back.

if you really want to buy this car, try talk him down because of the maintaince you have to do or he can do it himself and you can buy it of for the same price. ALWAYS get a TL with navigation, this car was meant to have it. you'll be very happy that you did cause sooner or later if you get it without, you'll wish to have it. Is not about not using a navigation or buying a tomtom, is about the experience, been able to have more feature like voice command and been able to navigate with your touchscreen radio. Been able to add appointment schedule reminder to your calendar. tell you voice command, "play cd 4 track 25" without having to search manually for it. Is a lot of thing you would wish to have in a car but without navigation you won't have it. later add a backup cam with a video converter which is USEFULL.

Also you see people expending $19-$22k in 06 TL of course with low miles. where ever problem you have in the future even engine replacement won't cause you more than $3500k (which i'm 99% won't happen for another 300k if keeps doing all regular maintaince) you would have alot of money to spare and if you buy it cash even better like i did which i don't have to worry about payments and interest.

110 is barely broken in on these engine- still find cross hatch marks in the cylinder bores at 200 on well maintained TL!!
(based on gen2 Mod who pulled his motor apart for fun when installing a cl-s w/6 MT)

as said above- be sure they replace the water pump, timing belt and tensioner, idler pullies, ac belt and its tensioner for good measure (it will fail at some point and you are right there now) and adjust the valves,
new spark plugs if not done yet- all thats called for on the 105 but most just get the water pump and tbelt not understanding what needs to be done to make the car run like a 300 hp sewing machine for another 100
Be sure the ps and brake fluids have been done
seafoam it too!

high mileage??- I dont know anyone who drives only 10-15 thousand miles a year

20-25k is perfectly normal where I live in the area of 50-140 miles daily commute patterns, and weekend trips of 500 miles to run to laguna seca-big sur-yosemite etc are common getaways
so a five year old car could have 100+ no sweat
oil changes are the key to engine life

When I dont really use the car- (prefer the honda motorcycle) it still racks up a thousand miles in a month!
the wife must be making late night backroads fun runs- the brake pad thickness disappears suddenly and the mileage jumps on the odometer- was just 90 now 99~

My only concern on MT cars is the clutch and slave cylinder (which leaks and fails)

the clutch pressure plate is special design that keeps pedal feel good right up until the day the disc is worn out- dead- no go. Not old school with a month of slipping to warn you

Have heard many prices on clutch replacement from 1500-2700 dollars, guessing the flywheel got trashed on the higher end jobs-
special tool required to install pressure plate correctly too
At first sign of slipping get it checked

If properly maintained (which this car seems to be) 100,000+miles is really not that high. I own a 06 tsx. I have all the service done by acura/honda dealers. I have kept all the records plus I get the maintenance book stamped. I have 100,000+problem free miles.

I purchased a 2004 w/ 87,000 miles on it about a year ago and has about 93,000 miles on it now. (Had a 2006 but totalled it ).

Anyways, only problem I had was replacing a little a/c wire. Cost me $40.

This is true! In November I bought my 06 Acura TL navi auto for 11,900 from the Acura Dealer. It had 142k miles but drove like a new car! It still smelled new inside, everything was mint! I even drove another 06 with 30k and it felt the same. They were asking 23k for the 06! The dealer changed the timing belt and water pump prior to purchase. No problems so far (knock on wood). Whats miles on a honda.

I have 115k on my 05TL 6MT (original owner). I have not had one single issue with the car whatsoever since day 1. None. These cars are good for 200k+ if they are properly maintained. I've had all of the required maintenance done including the timing belt and wp at 105k. If they're willing to do the timing belt etc for you and keep the price the same, I'd say go for it.

My 2005 was purchased with 83,000 miles. The condition of it is miles and miles ahead of my sister's 2004 with 60,000 miles. It drives way better too and I'm not just saying that. My dad noticed it also. It's all about the way a car was cared for and maintained.

I bought my 2006 in April of 06. It had 13 miles on it when I drove it off the lot, and of those 13, I put 5 test driving it. I now have 93k and I HOPE I'm just getting started. No way is my 34k investment going to be done in just 4 years. I expect to get at least another 7 - 10 years or 125k - 175k out of my car. I pretty much do all the maintenance myself (minus large jobs and things I don't have tools for...), and my car runs great!!!

I say haggle a little more on price if you can, and use the high milage as a bargaining point. But, don't be turned away by those miles. I agree these cars are built to LAST!!!
