I'm looking to upgrade my stock HID bulbs to 8000k. Is this a difficult job to do? I have an 07 Acura TL. Please help!!

What's your reasoning for choosing 8K may I ask?

 

I guess he wants more of a blueish look.

 

Don't do 8000k, do 6000k. You'll get the bluish color you're looking for but you'll get more light on the road.

 

depends on what he is looking for, i would not go over 6000K

 

I know it gives off the "Blue" color, I'm just curious if he thinks they'll be brighter with higher "K" rating.
I just recently swapped my CBI's out for a pair of 12000K. I'm making a comparison thread from CBI's, 6K, 10K, and 12k, for people to visually see the difference in output. I feel like i'm driving in a swimming pool with how ugly blue these things are.

 

There doesn't seem to be much point in using anything but the stock color temp (4300k) IMO. All OEM HID headlights use 4300k bulbs for good reason, it provides the best usable light output with the least eye fatigue.

As you go up the spectrum you get lower usable light output as the color shifts from white (4300k-5000k), to blue (6000k-8000k), to violet (10000k+). Blue and violet light tends to cause much more eye fatigue than white as well.

^^^ What he said. Your not "upgrading" by going 8k, the colors start to change darker as you go up, the lower the "K" the higher the light output. If you think stock is not enough, going 8k will definitely not help.

 

I'm going with 8K because I like the color! I can see just fine with them. I've had them on all of my vehicles and never have had an issue. 8k is still white with a pinch of blue!

Don't mean to jack the OPs thread. I have an 05 TL, and well I'm thinking of replacing them, as someone stated that they are 4300k output. For those who have stock HIDs do they look a bit blue, the reason I ask is that when I bought the car it had a very small hint of blue but over the a yr. of ownership it seems to have shifted in color to a white/yellowish color. I notice other stock TL's have a brighter blue output at night than mine, is this a sign of them going out?

 

Nope, but this is the easiest way. Some people here has done it without taking it off, but it will take longer and cause more pain in the ass

 

4300k HIDs project a white light with a slight hint of yellow on the road. The reason projector HID headlights look slightly blue when you look directly at the headlight (as you look at other cars' headlights) is because some of the light is being bent by the projector lens (like a prism effect) which gives it a hint of blue.

 

It is not. The alternative is doing it under the fender wall with is such a pain in the ass. Don't try it. For the peace of mind, just remove the bumper. Its not hard at all after some practice.

The 'blueish' tint is based off it just being HIDs. When we're talking about blueish tint on like 6k or 8k, the blueish tint is more noticeable from outside of the car. It could also be color shifts/flickering because the bulbs is going out/really cheap.

 

Correct, when I am in front of another TL on the freeway I look back and its very blue, but the cars are completely stock even some w/o tint.
My aunt's 06 TL has the same blue color and mine looks white/yellowish, when facing the cars against the garage( flat straight). My aunts 06 looks blue compared to mine and when looking from the side, mines yellowish, and her's is white/blue. She told me they were going to go out which is why I asked my question.

Mine have never flickered and as far as I know they are stock ones since all documents given to me were either dealer work or oil changes ONLY at Pepboys. And there was a lot of dealer documents, but none were the HID bulb replacements over her 6 yrs. ownership.

 

I agree with champ... I replaced my stock HIDs with slim ballast 10000k. When trying to install the new HID kit from over the top it was a fawkin nightmare you cant see where your hand is going and if your not familiar with the set up you have no clue what your feeling for you will probably break or bend things.
Taking the bumper off is so easy and way less hassle everything is right there.
I will be taking my bumper back off come spring when i install the cleared/blacked out headlights and I will be going from a 10000k bulb to a 6000k.

Yeah, OEM HID bulbs tend to shift from white towards more blue as they age, so since your aunt said her bulbs were going out then that makes sense that they looked more blue. They're just old.

I have the 8k and I would not suggest it unless you don't do a lot of night driving.

 

Sorry for the confusion, after looking at it I got confused myself, sorry was in class and on my phone typing it. Really I never knew that they shift blue rather than white as they age. She doesn't do a lot of night driving and usually sits in her garage, since she does most of her work from home. I can see why hers don't look as white/yellow compared to mine.

 

I love my 8k!

 

6000K is the highest I would go. Well that just me and IMO.

The higher the kelvin (color) the lower the lumen (light output). The factory HIDs are about 4300k and they are going to be the brightest on the spectrum. If you want more color you will have to sacrifice some light output. You will still be able to drive at night though and see; you just won't have as much light.

I think when one has a combination of hid fogs and headlights same color 8k, they light out put should be sufficient. I mean even when I had my rsx with 8k I was ok!

 

what brand is the oem bulbs? and what's the best alternative at the regular auto part stores such as pepboys and advance auto? i will stick with the 4300 output. thanks

 

OEM Bulbs are Osrams 66240 I believe or 66040 I don't remeber off hand. Depends on how much you want to spend on a pair of bulbs. They can range from $45-$200 a pair. Don't go to a dealership for bulbs they're charging $200 PER bulb.

If you want to stay with OEM, I'd say go with either Osram SVS, or Philips 85122 (When I talked to Matt at TRS, he said all Philips bulbs are now marked 85122 and the droped the "+" because all the bulbs are now based off of the original "+" ) Since you are looking for the OEM 4300K color.

Why would you downgrade to a HALOGEN bulb?
you asked for help, Nate(who is our lighting guru) gave you some suggestions and where to buy, however, you completely side stepped the suggestions and went to advanced auto where they recommended a downgrade...

This is why you dont go to autozone or places like autozone. Seriously, ordering online is the only way.

 

Your factory headlight bulb size is a D2S XENON bulb. Now why the hell advance auto part would recommend you a 9006 HALOGEN bulb is beyond me.

The TL doesn't even use 9006.... It uses 9005 for a daytime running light bulb and ONLY that. The TL has Bi-Xenon headlamps

Seems like a lot of the counter clerks at the generic parts stores, like advance, arnt too familiar with HIDs. Especially our bi xenon's. This is the best place to learn about them.

 

Actually 04-06 US market TLs do use 9006 halogen bulbs for the fog lights.

For some reason a lot of 3rd party parts databases incorrectly list the bulbs used in the fog lights (9006) as the low beam headlight bulbs. I'm asuming the fact that the 04-06 fog lights are unconventionally placed withing the headlight housing is what lead to this mixup.

 

Also, the wording.
the bold could be interpreted as the opposite of high beams, A.K.A. driving lights.
