Help! Quartz or Ebony with Anthracite?!
Help! Quartz or Ebony with Anthracite?!
I'm sorry to start a whole thread on this, but I'm having a huge, huge problem deciding on which of these two interior colors is better (exterior will probably be anthracite). The TL will be the first car I've purchased and the first car I've driven with a leather interior, so I have no previous experience with which to make this decision. As far as looks go, they both look beautiful to me. The ebony looks sleek while the quartz has a very elegant look -- I oscillate every day on which looks better.
Because one doesn't jump out more than the other, I'm wondering the following:
1.) Does either color tend to "get old?" I mean, might the quartz seem boring after I get used to it, or the ebony too dark?
2.) I've heard that ebony ages poorly. I'm wondering which color will hold up better against UV-induced fading, showing streching/cracks/abrasion-induced wear, etc...
3.) I will be moving to southern Florida within a year, and I'm wondering if the ebony will be significantly warmer than the quartz or just moderately so.
Finally, if you have either color interior on your 04 TL, are you satisfied thus far? Does anyone wish they had gotten the other color?
Thanks...

Quartz
I would recommend the Quartz. It contrasts very well with the black dashboard.
I have ebony in my 2001 CL-S and I like the Quartz interior. I think it's the best interior color for the '04 TL.

Get the quartz. Currently we have two SUV's, one with black leather and one with Toyota's "Quartz." It is much more pleasent and open feeling in the Grey than the black. Also in FLA the Quartz will be a little cooler.

Well - I'm gonna buck the trend here a lil' - I have an Anthracite with Ebony on order because I thought that the color made the interior somewhat more aggressive and complemented the interior (aluminum and black trim on the doors and dask/console).
In all honesty, I thought it was a lil' more masculine.
However ..... don't burn me yet. The sales manager invited me down to look at an Anthracite with Quartz that another individual declined. I travelled to the dealership more interested in seeing the Anthracite and with no hope of liking the Quartz.
...... The Quartz was nice - really nice. ALthough it still did not win me over and make me change, the Quartz is not that light grey that some manufacturers call Quartz - I thought it was more of a medium grey .... very classy, and actually brought out the aluminum/black on the doors and console.
I'm sticking with Ebony, but both colors are winners.

How About Quartz?
I've been considering the same thing, after just seeing the Quartz/Anthracite combo last night. I hadn't even considered the grey interior before. In fact, I originally wanted a beige interior, but the beige option on the Anthracite (Camel) just doesn't work for me. While I prefer the "wood" accent inserts (maybe I could swap them out later), I don't like the stark contrast between the Camel cabin surfaces and the black dash. I think it makes the dash look comparably cheap and further highlights the cheesy plastic tubes framing the dash guages.
Personally, I like the look of the Ebony interior best. I think it looks the best with the car's dash and console components. However, I think it will: absorb too much heat in the summer; show dirt and wear too easily; make the interior space appear smaller; discourage me from ever letting my yellow lab in the back seat. :-)
Hey...I think I just talked myself into Quartz!

I'm having the exact same issue as your having i also want either a satin silver or anthracite colored TL but can't think of which color (ebony or quartz) would be a better choice. All i know is that Ebony seems classy and Anthracite seems interesting/original. So i'm havin a hard time choosing an interior shade. Thanx for the posts so far....keep em commin.

My wife actually saw a TL with an Ebony interior
but instead of the carbon fiber trim/accents, the dealer
put on the faux wood trim accessory package - which
is darker than the wood trim that comes with the
Camel/Parchment interior. She was quite impressed with
how the dark wod worked with the aluminum and Ebony.
Just another idea to confuse you more ......

Thanks for the replies thus far! This feels like such a monumental decision -- I don't want to spend the next 5-6 years saying "Why didn't I get the other color?"
The problem is that it's hard to get an accurate portrayal of what the quartz looks like as a whole. The Acura dealers around here all have ebony in the showroom, and those cars look AMAZING! All the quartz interiors I've seen have still been in all the plastic w/o the floor mats, etc. and its difficult to get the "feel" of what the car will look like unpackaged.
If anyone has any pics of their interior, I'd be very grateful if you posted them.
Thanks again...

I thought I would go for the Quartz. BUT... The dealership I went to had Anthracite with Quartz as their "demo" this car had only 400 miles but looked like it was a well aged on the inside. If it is that tuff to keep clean at 400 miles I can’t imagine 4000. I was all set for quartz which is at the dealer as I speak. So now I wait two more weeks and will be the wiser, I believe, for it. IMHO.

I thought that I'd probably get black floor mats if I end up getting the quartz -- they'll hide the dirt better and enhance the two tone effect of the interior...

For whatever reason, the ebony does nothing for me.
On the other hand, I've always hated two tone dashes. I always thought that bmw doing it looked cheap.
Now guess what? I think I suddenly like it. So now the quartz and even the camel is appealing.
Even more, I thought I settled on anthracite with quartz. Then I saw a photo of one w/the camel interior. Now I've always thought a grey exterior with a (shade of) beige interior looked like an old folks car. Guess I'm getting old, cuz I liked that too.
The quartz on the TL is quite a bit darker than on the TSX. I really don't think getting it dirty will be much more of a problem with any color other than black.
Also keep in mind that dirt is the number one enemy of leather. Getting black to 'hide' it may actually hasten its demise. Perhaps better to show it (and force you to clean it).
The carpets looked worn; mats were dirty, dark scuff marks on the doors, etc. It really looked used. I did drive a TL with ebony on two separate occasions. It still had a fresh look to it. I looked at the pictures in the gallery and I really thought that was the interior color I wanted. I called the dealer I ordered the Quartz one from and changed to Ebony.
I did a search and revived this old thread.
Looks like we'll be pulling the trigger on an Anthracite in the next month or so. I looked at both the Ebony and Quartz on the dealer lot. I like the look of the Quartz...it brightens up the inside of the car a bit.
Is anyone dissatisfied with the way their Ebony or Quartz is wearing and do you wish you ordered the other color? Please don't include the fact that the Quartz gets dirty. I realize that as I have a tan interior now. I'm more concerned with how each color looks with cracks and wrinkles over time and if there's any fading to the color.
Thanks!!!

Once you've had Ebony, you'll never go back....
The Ebony is a better match for the carbon fiber and the rest of the interior. The Quartz is nice, but it adds too much to the interior colors. Ebony also hides dirt much better.
One downside of Ebony, however, is that every little minor scuff mark shows up. It's easy to wipe off though.

I have an NBP with camel. Yesterday (Saturday) I went to a baseball game and I parked next to an Anthracite TL (the driver was just getting out of the car; he'd bought it a month ago). It's the first really close look I've gotten at the anthracite. Quite honestly I cannot remember what color interior he had, but just based on the exterior of the car I would vote for quartz. Strikes me as a better match. If the exterior were silver rather than anthracite I'd probably vote for the ebony unless your car will be parked outside a lot, but it's definitely darker than silver and the ebony would strike me as too dark for that color exterior.
So far it looks like it's been coming down to everyone's personal preference. I like them equally both. I want to go with whatever one is going to look less worn out after 3 or 4 years (dirt won't be an issue as I use Lexol several times a year).
For you '04 ebony & quartz owners out there that have put some miles on your seats, are any of your seats not looking too good after your first year, especially with the little pinholes in the seats?

It was an easy decision for me cause I'm old. My 02 MDX was only available with ebony. It is holding up well and still looks new but I had no choice in interior color. Also, it shows every speck of dust just like on the an ebony exterior.
For the record, ebony or black has always been available in most if not all cars. My quartz 05 TL is only 6 months old w/ 6k miles but it also still looks new. The TL is washed and dusted weekly.
I wanted something different so I didn't go with SSM, NBP, WDP or Antricite for the exterior either. Take a look at ABP! Good luck, you really can't go wrong.

I've got Anthracite/Ebony and I love the way the black interior goes with the carbon fiber and aluminum trim. It's a more agressive and sporty look to me, but get whatever color you like. You're the one who has to live with your decision, not the rest of us. BTW...the Anthracite won't come alive until you put a few coats of Zaino on the finish. When I got my TL, I was sort of dissappointed with the depth and shine with the Anthracite color. After I got the Zaino treatment done (5 layered coats), the color got darker and the depth of shine just came alive. Everyone who has seen my car has commented on how great the color looks after the Zaino treatment. It looked sort of dull when it was new, but now it's got depth and shine like black without the hassles of black paint.
Which interior caught your eye first? That's the one you should go with. Get what you want and what looks good to you. Don't base it on what the consensus is, it comes down to your personal preference.
I vote Ebony. I have Anthracite/Ebony, and do not regret my decision whatsoever. As a matter of fact, I only selected Anthracite because I thought it was the best exterior color to go with the Ebony interior. I originally wanted the blue pearl exterior, but that does not offer an ebony interior, so I selected the Antharcite, and LOVE it. (No flames please...it's just my opinion. I love the other colors too, but this was my preference.)
When the designers thought of the exterior colors and they came up with Anthracite - it was assumed it would have Ebony interior.
No questions asked. I had the quartz in an old (non-Acura) car and it made it look cheap inside IMO. When I bought mine I just thought it all blended together nicely - the silver and black interior all flows - there is some carpeting that is the lighter black/dark grey which gives nice contrast.
Bottom line is it should be what YOU like. I like Ebony and would get it again in a heartbeat. If we all picked the same combo - we would all look pretty lame with the same cars.

I just got mine a few days ago, and agonized over this myself. I went with Quartz, the dealer tells me it's a more popular combination.
The way I see it, quartz is a more low-key look. If you want to trick your car out with tinted windows, the chrome wheels - even underglow and after-market sound thumpers - go with ebony, it's a "badder" look.

Thanks for all the info. I feel comfortable that both colors wear equally well.
Jetjock, that's exactly what I thought when I saw the Antracite on the lot. It had somewhat of a shine to it, but it sure looked like the paintjob could have used another layer of clearcoat.
Zaino it is.

Have experience with Both Quartz and Ebony !!
My wife has an Anthracite with Ebony. Her interior color choice coming from a '97 Acura CL with Quartz interior.
I also have a '91 Black Integra GS with Ebony Leather. The black leather in the Integra aged very well here in Florida and held up for over 10 years with no unusual cracks, discoloration or staining. Just about 3 years ago the driver's seat started to crack with lighter lines in some places. Must admit I did not do any special conditioning or care for the leather and the car has no window tinting.
On the other hand the '97 CL with a very similar color interior as the TL Quartz had developed rather dark lines, creases, crevices or whatever and the leather actually looked dirty in these areas even though it was not dirt. No cracks in the leather but the inevitable creases did not age well. She also had been set on the Quartz on the TL because the contrast in the car does look very sharp. She however chose Ebony due to her history with the grey leather and is very happy with it.
Bottom line....the Anthracite looks great with either color combination but with reasonable care if one is planning to hold onto their TL for many years I'd have to say from experience that the Ebony's appearance will hold up better than the Quartz.
Just my 2 cents, John in Tampa
