Buying based on mileage alone is foolish. I will take highly maintained over miles any day. Years ago I bought a Miata with 230,000km and a mountain of receipts and documents. Was tight as a drum. Wrung it out for three years and sold it for what I had into it.

I would keep looking and be patient for the right car to come along. If you HAVE to make a decision, go with the car that suits your tastes. Otherwise make a list of what you want and find it. I got Navi, ASM exterior color, 6spd, Blk interior/leather, aspec kit, w/84k miles for 12.5k (2 years ago).

For me - I hate camel leather interior. I have to have the black interior.
I had to have a 6 speed. Never own and automatic.
Eventually, you will have to get a tune up and replace tires, so factor in that maintenance. There are deals out there, Good Luck.

I really like the 2005 with 65k miles, in fact, I'm going to look at it later this week and hopefully buy it as long as it is what he says. Will the transmission be okay depending on the date it was made?

I have another option since I sold my G.

The one at the Acura dealer with 86,000 miles and they're asking $13,500. It's a base model - blue on gray.
He offered to give me a non-transferrable lifetime powertrain warranty on the car as long as I have it serviced at their dealer for oil changes every 6,000 miles. I will try to knock them down on the price about a grand. Would that be a good deal or should I get the one with 65,000 miles?

If the one with the lower miles is in better shape go for it IF you like the color. Which one do you like the best or have a better feeling about?

get it all in writing, but a lifetime warranty on anything especially the transmission is pretty attractive. Make sure it covers the transmission specifically.

My first question was if he could give me a warranty for the transmission and he said he'll give me a lifetime powertrain warranty. He said it will cover the engine, transmission/transaxle and drive axles for the life of the car under my ownership. Even if I decided to keep this car forever (which I won't) I would have the major repairs covered. This means as many years as I want of worry-free driving. I could drive my car as hard as I want any not have to worry about much.

I cannot stress enough the buyer's guide I pointed out in my earlier post.

If you sign the current buyer's guide in the window...you'll be hard pressed to get them to sign any subsequent "agreement."

The buyer's guide is an FTC document and THE document to get "agreements" in writing...you need them to draft a new buyer's guide...don't even look at the current one at closing...and don't close on finances or hand over money until your warranty agreement is signed in a new buyer's guide.

Get there early...don't drive the car off the lot after initiating the dealing process and not until the warranty is documented and signed in a new buyer's guide.

I fear a nonchalant attitude will result in you getting burned in what you think you're getting.

Unless your Dad owns the dealership, these guys are not your friends...they'll say anything so you show up in their den to be raped and devoured.

I've already met the salesman who told me he'd give me the warranty and he seems like a straightforward, nice, genuine guy. He actually drives a 2005 TL which is nice to know they believe in their products. When I close I will make sure that we've all signed something explaining the warranty.

It probably won't even cost them money by giving me the warranty, in fact, they'll have first appraisal on any servicing the car will need so they might even make money. If the transmission does fail, they can fix it for relatively cheap seeing that they are a dealer.

I bought my 2004 TL with 65k miles for $12k, what happened to the black 2005 you were looking at? They had a navy blue 2005 TL at a local acura dealership around my way. Navi and it had 74k miles and they wanted $13k. I went with the private party. Go with the color combo you like best. Good luck on your search.

My car was in perfect condition but it did have a minor fender bender which doesn't even show on the CarFax. He offered me $2,000 below trade in value because the hood had been repainted. Frankly, I'd rather have the hood repainted than have stone chips like most cars (the paint is decent too).

I'm going to tell him that since that car had an accident and it does show up on the CarFax, I'll give him $12,000 ($1,500 less than asking but they are providing a warranty). Also, if the accident on their car shows up on the CarFax, it should be of even less value. I'm offering him a better deal than he offered me. Plus, they've had that car for over a month and a big Acura dealer like that tries to move the cars through quickly. When I shopped their last year, they would just keep lowering the price until it sold.

you are buying a 5-7 years old car so chance of involving in accident is about 25%, if you can live with it then buy it and if "accident free is a must" then walk away from any car that has accident. I personally owned a 99 Accord which involve in an accident (I knew it before the carfax was pull) but yet never experience any mechanical problem that relate to the accident. The only reason why I opt for "Accident free" on my Type S because I am paying $20k or more on a used car and I am feeling with that much money being spend accident free is a must. Since I can buy some car as brand new with that much money.

Okay, I have another dilemma. The same dealer also has a 2004 TL with 95k miles and Nav. It's silver on black and they're asking $12,300. It's had a minor accident as well. If I could get the same warranty they're offering on the '05, which one should I get? I would also have them do the 105k service though.

Update: The dealer still has the TL and they're asking the same price. I asked the salesman if they recommended the timing belt be replaced after 7 years, however, it hasn't been done on this car(????). I told him that it would need to be done, with the warranty. I'm thinking of offering $11,500 and working my way up--to $12,500 max.

BUT, they also have a 2005 TL with 120k with Nav asking $11,500. Assuming I could get the lifetime powertrain warranty on this one as well, which do you guys think is better?
