Heated Seats

Sooooo how good are the TL's heated seats? I like my seats getting nice and toasty (hot). I also don't like to wait forever for them to get hot. I know the Audi seats can get super hot(6 LEVELS) but IMO the SAAB seats don't get warm at all.

Thanks

the driver's side is better than the passenger side. i believe the passenger's side only has a heater under the seat cushion, while the driver's side also has one in the upright back cushion.

Ahh very good then.. thanks for the info fellas! I''m sure you have all been in other cars and as you know some are much hotter then others.

thanks again.

well looks like the TL is in the lead. again not getting until march. i was thinking of keeping a running thread on the status of my "quest for a new car" maybe I should do that... might be kinda fun.

You mean you haven't turned yours on accidentally yet? They should have put the switches in a different location.

I hope the seats heat up in the winter as quickly as they do in the summer.

They heat up very nicely in the colder months too....I found that I'd use the "high" setting for getting 'em where I wanted and then the low setting (or even "off" sometimes) after that.

Is this accurate? My wife was complaining that her seat (the passenger seat) wasn't getting hot on her lower back. We switched seats and she was right. Only the bottom part of the seat was warm. I figured something was wrong and I was planning on calling in for service.

Is this the standard configuration? Should I not call it in because this is normal?

That is exactly waht Acura recommends you do. The high setting is only to get the seats warm. If you leave it on high the car automatically toggles on and off as opposed to actually staying on high at a constant rate. Low is the only setting that gives you a constant steady heat.

Yes it is acurate.

I think it has to do with the passenger side airbag. There is a sensor in the seat back that turns it on or off so they could not put a heater in the seat back.

I am 100% sure that no heat in the passenger seatback is normal and about 90% as to the reasoning behind it.

Yes, the right front seat only has a heating element in the seat cushion and not the seat back, because of the OPDS sensor.

OPDS= Occupant detection system.

And yes, mine heats up lickety-split & is too hot for me unless it's under 40 degrees outside. I only use low and frequently find myself shutting it off altogether.

This is correct, as Bluenote says. To add to his point, consider that the reason the driver's seat can be different is that there is no need for an airbag sensor on the driver's seat, given that there is someone in the driver's seat whenever the car is driven.

This is not unique to the TL. The TSX is the same way. I experienced it in my father's TSX before I got my TL and I was surprised by it, and did not learn the reason until I got my TL and RTFM'd.

if you have a remote starter for the car,
you can warm up your seats before you get into the car!
love this feature.

I just wish we had seat coolers for the summer (our longest season),
as it doesn't get too cold here in the south.

Warm...

Hey, they work sooo good that I have seat prints branded into my butt!

(Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity to raise the spectre of butt prints!)

Seriously though, they do work nicely as far as I'm concerned.

They work great. Much better than the heated seats I had in my Passat. The manual suggests that the switch be set to high until the seat is sufficiently heated and then it should switched to low.

No you cannot because there's a weight sensor i think that avoid that the seat heat if there's no butt on.

Ouch. Not to be picky but another cost cutting Acura move. Other cars (I won't mention but it is German) have both a weight sensor for the airbag and full seat heater. The back is the most important part. My Gfriend didn't like the TL pass seat too much b/c of the lack of height adj (she is short) and would not have been too happy with a lack of back heat (since she has a bad back). She loves to go for a ride because it is like a heating pad for her back.

Everyone agrees the TL has a lot of value for the money but things like this show where the money is saved.

I am still amazed that the RL only has 4 way passenger seat adj. - on a $50k car. Crazy.

i'm not so sure about that - i put my passenger seat on when no one was there and it got warm. It may have not felt as warm since I was not pushing down.

Well since I will never have an opportunity to make use of the seat heaters, I thought about testing then, so I could know how effective they are, so a test was performed while taking a friend to the airport. Suddenly I heard "my butt is boiling!". But she didnt get upset.

yea ive been thinking the same thing about the new RL..I Mean my old 96 RL had 4 way power seats...i expected that the new rl would have at least 8 or somethin..i mean im not counting in the power lumbar, then it would be 6....but 4 is nothing compared to other cars out there today...even my uncles 97 avalon has 8 way power passenger seats....

But back to the topic about the heated seats....the seats heat up pretty quick but not as quick at the seats in my 96 RL...i mean the RL heats up faster with the heat and the heated seats....And the A/C is alittle colder than my TL's...but still its ppretty damn good...

Weather in hawaii not cold enough for heated seats, but I wish there was a seat cooler for those long afternoons at the beach.

Mine take forever to heat up. At least 5 minutes. Then they work fine. My wife's Suburban heats up within one minute.

Anybody else's seats take so long to heat up?

I had an '03 passat which had much better heated seats. Had 5 settings and at 3 for me it was burning. My wife likes it hot and used only setting 4. I like it warm not hot the passat was to hot for me. The TL is how I like it.

On the German cars I've had, the front passenger seat has had all the same functions as the driver -- except memory. On the one Japanese car I've had so far (a 1982 Supra that I bought in 1982 -- yep, middle-aged enthusiast here!), the inflatable lumbar and adjustable torso width were driver-only. I think there's differences on my friend's '04 Lexus LS430, too, between driver and passenger. How come the Japanese send the passenger in coach, even if the driver is in first class? Have you checked out the new LS430? They have one model with a rear seat that looks like a Maybach -- but only on one side. The other gets the "plain" reclining seat.

Rain sensor for the windshield wipers is another good example of places where (IMHO) Acura cheaped out. My first GTI (a 2000) had a rain sensor. That car had a list price of about $23k. My current GTI (a 2003) has it, too. How come Acura couldn't make the economics work on a car that costs almost twice as much?

My firends monte carlo and suburban only takes a miunte to heat up. This is due to the heating elememt being closer to the surface of the leather.

They are of good quality. They are not super hot by any means, but they are very comfortable.
