Got destroyed and humiliated by a friend's Grand National

A little background. Friend's GN has run 11.60@118mph, stock motor with boltons. My GN walks all over him and I've been pretty ruthless to him and never passed up an opportuninty to rub it in on the street. Now that my GN is in the bodyshop and all I have is the TL, he decided to get revenge.

So I'm out minding my own business and spot him way behind me. I think of turning off before he sees me but it's too late. He swoops up on me and gets next to me. Great... As luck or my lack of luck would have it we catch a redlight together. He's grinning ear to ear. I decide to punch it anyway just to get him off my back. Light goes green and I leave him. He kind of hangs back and then lunges up on me hard and hits the brakes next to me. Keep in mind I'm still floored. He proceeds to go gas, brake, gas, brake, making the car bounce next to me. So not only is he spanking me but humiliating me in the process. Finally he let it rip and left me many buslengths behind. I let off the gas at 80mph because I was just wasting gas at this point. I get a phone call not 30 seconds later asking why I was afraid to floor it (he knew I was floored). I'm sure I'm going to hear about this for the next 10 years lol. So now when I get my GN back, not only am I going to stomp his fast car but no mercy on his IS350 either.

It's all in fun. If I had to get rid of one of my two cars, it would be the TL. I'm addicted to the 620lbs of torque kicking me in the back. Besides it's relatively civilized for the amount of power it makes. I love the TL, it's a great cruiser but it's still just a way to get from point A to point B.

It's a Buick Grand National. Someone told me once that it was the fastest/most powerful V6 GM ever made.

It still is the faster production V6 car FI or NA GM has ever made by a long shot. 0-60 in 4.9 sec and in the high 12's stock is pretty friggin fast. In the 87 the GNX was the faster production car made, faster than anything Ferrari had on the road and would absolutely rape a Vette back then. I truely want one badly. They are killer sleepers as they aren't much to look at and simple bolt on's will make the car extremely fast and a built engine and bigger turbo means drag strip monster. The stock tranny's could handle a ton of power too. The 3800 engine in those cars is still used today in a lot of GM vehicles as it's the most durable engine GM has ever made and really is virtually bullet proof.

They're fun cars. My dad has two, a low mileage stageII 800hp moster and a daily driver that runs 12.4s in daily driver trim (street tires and pump gas). I have one and three of my friends have them.

Their claim to fame is what they can do with very little money in mods. This was back in '01 with a factory stock 200,000 mile motor. Only mods were open exhaust, boost turned up a little, and a slightly bigger turbo. Less than $550 in mods. I came out to the races on street tires and pump gas not expecting to race, just spectate. Mustang I got talked into running was a supercharged and intercooled 5.0 with a small cam and some sort of aluminum heads.... and slicks which is the reason I got blown away off the start but blew past on the top end. The GN is a whole different monster now.

Yes... Very ugly. Mine is a 5AT. The TL outruns his 98 Mustang GT (manual but the slowest year of the 4.6L I think) and a different friend's 5.0 Mustang surprisingly. Against the IS, just no chance. Doesn't matter if it's from a roll or from a stop. The IS350 is more in the league of the M3. We've run two of those and the winner is pretty much decided by who hits the gas first. Ran a 335 Bimmer and he got a carlength off the start and we were deadlocked until we let off at ~100mph. I wouldn't mind one but the interior seems cheaper than the TL and I just don't fit in the IS series. I'm only 6'1", 200lbs. Still happy in my decision since I already have a fast car. The TL IMO is a better cruising car.

Kind of off topic but I bought a friend's old NOS fogger system for $50. I think a 100hp shot should have my friend scratching he head when I walk the Lexus.

No doubt, IS350 can do 0-60 in 4.8s, that is already much faster than TL 6MT's 5.7s, and AT is even slower...

Maybe with a 50 shot. They're mid-low 5's for their 0-60.

Don't forget to post this kill here:

The Grand Nationals will be a classic in time. They're already getting more rare and increasing in value for the right version. I think back in the day, the FBI used to uncork these and 180mph was possible.

I had an 86 GN. they were very interesting cars. didnt take much to have basically a race car out of one. change the chip, turbo and you are set. bolting on just nitrous would bottom the rear shocks out!
still fairly resonable to pick up. the gnx was a limited production in 87 with bigger turbo and some other goodies. I priced one to order and didnt do it and the little local dealer didnt mark it up. low mile one now is around 45k!

There are a couple low, low mileage GNXs in the 100K range right now.

My friend's car mentioned in this thread has very few mods. In fact, I'm the one who worked on it and took it from bone stock to how it is now. With a fuel pump, race chip, open downpipe, K&N, and race gas it ran a string of 12.1s but could never get that elusive 11.99 on the stock turbo. Still not bad for a car with ~$500 in mods.

Still on the stock motor but with an intercooler, turbo, and injector upgrade, it's a mid 11 sec car with a much less aggressive tune.

True. I tried to buy one back in 87 and couldn't get one. The FBI had bought up the remaining production.

What was really cool was getting a Regal T Type with the GN options. My dad had one in white and talk about a sleeper.

Funny, my dad has a white T-type (420rwhp) daily driver and a 4.5L stage II GN in the garage. The T-type really looks like a regular family car with the exception of the rear tires.
