Goodbye to my 2007 Type S and hello to 2013 Ram 1500 Sport

So the time has come after almost 2 years of ownership to sell the TL! I will be trading it in and picking up the 2013 Ram 1500 sport. It will work out much better for the business I own.

Ive never traded a car in before and have no clue on the process. Can anyone help me out with info on this whole ordeal?? I still owe 3 years on the TL and will just trade it in to save myself time. I know I will lose out a bit but whatever.

Usually when you trade a car in they will give you book value of the car depending on condition. If you still owe more than what it is worth after they asses the value, that money will be rolled into your new payments of the Ram. Hopefully you can sell a few things off the TL and put some it back to stock, such as the rims because the dealer probably isn't going to give you any extra for things like that. Good Luck!

Had your car been 6MT, we could have worked out MORE than trade in.

F150 is a much better truck. You should really read the reviews. Plus the back seat moves out of the way completely and makes it easy to load stuff in the rear of the cab unlike the Dodge.

I'd definitely part out before trading in.

Have always been a Ford fan myself, not sure how the new ram is but I have had a 98 ram 1500 and a 2010 ram 1500.......the 98 was junk, inside was cheap and everything was broke and always leaked coolant from somewhere, the paint sucked and the suspension was junk.

The 2010 had 400 miles on it and picked it up with 9 miles on it and was only 3 months old and had major major problems so the dealer ended up taking it back from me which was a huge relief for me.

And to top it off my girlfriend has a 04 ram 1500, has 70k miles on it.....driveline dropped last weekend lol, leaks coolant and overheats, all the power windows and locks are all screwed up and sometimes choose not to work.

All cars obviously have their problems lol hopefully the newer rams are better then the older models.

Fords also hold their value more than Dodges do as well, if your thinking long term here.

I feel like we're totally hijacking this thread with recommendations but whatever - I have to jump on the bandwagon with everyone else: don't screw around with that Dodge Ram nonsense. Buy an F150 and be done with it. You'll be happier.

Ford is leaps and bounds ahead of other US auto makers. Their reliability has gone up significantly over the past 5 years with renewed emphasis on quality control, and when it comes to trucks, there's really no denying the impressive track record of the F150.

I would have to agree, especially with the Ecoboost engine. IMO, if you're going to buy a new vehicle, you should try to get one that's as modern and/or technologically advanced as possible as a way of "future proofing" it. Frankly, a 1/2 ton pickup with a big port-injected pushrod V8 like the one in the Ram is already starting to seem behind the times. Five years from now it will probably seem ancient, as tougher fuel economy standards will probably push all trucks towards smaller DOHC direct injected V8s and turbocharged V6s.

Trade in value is usually pretty low.

I would suggest selling your car privately and then purchasing whatever truck you want.

Personally, I don't like Dodge for anything.

Suvs=GM/Chevy
Trucks=Ford
Cars=Honda/Toyota

My last vehicle I was offered 11k trade sold it for 18k private. Don't trade it in lol. Also no Dodge, Ford or Chevy if you want it to last and hold value.

Whatever truck you decided to trade your car for make sure to negotiate the price of the truck BEFORE you let them know that you'll be trading in a car. After you've settled on a price tell them that you'd like to trade your car in and negotiate the money that they need to pay you for yours. That way you'll get the lowest price for the truck and best value for your TL.

Dude pretty obvious you want a Dodge. I hope you are ready for the repair bills. The Ford is a better overall truck period. You seriously need to go drive one. I have and the Dodges.

My friend has a 2001 Ford F150 Lariat, with the 5.4L. It has had NO problems ever in it's life except normal maintenance. Now near 180k miles, still going strong.

No problems with the spark plugs or coils on the 5.4? If so, he's one of the lucky ones.

Surprised no one has mentioned the Tundra yet. I know the new F-150 with the Eco-Boost is supposed to be one hell of a truck, but it can't be quite Tundra level. Or can it? Ford really has come a long way recently.

Good luck with the Ram, OP. They look good, but I'd be nervous owning one. I had a '99 with no real problems, but bought it at 29k miles and let it go around low 50k miles. I got nervous when everyone else started having transmission failures.

I'm not into pickups, but if the quality of the new ram is anywhere near the quality of my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland it's gonna be nice! A lot of people have not had the chance to see or experience some of Chrysler's new vehicles and I will say they aren't even in the same league as what a chrysler vehicles were just a couple years ago. I have had my share of vehicles and that new Overland is impressive. So far 10,000 miles and its flawless and the interior is rock solid and down right gorgeous looking.

As for the trade in process this is how it works. Take whatever number you would expect them to give you and take another 5k off that. Seriously, trade in numbers will usually make you laugh, or spit your drink out, or change your mind about doing it all together. Even though it requires more work, best way to do it is buy the new ram and then work on selling the TL privately. That way you can detail the car and get it real nice and just park it until it sells. The TL is not hard to sell. I have sold 3 Type S's and they all sold to the first person to see them within a week.

get a 2500 and call it a day. I have 2 3500 duallys and while they are not very economical, they will pull the house you are sitting in off its foundation. nothing beats a cummins. the 06 single wheel with a tuner was giving us 22mpg. but that had the 5.9. my dads 11' with a 6.7 is just as bad as my wifes king ranch expedition. i own my own business and use my trucks to pull goosenecks so mpg is irrelevant to me. you said you own your own business. the truck is a tool that will make you money so get the best one you can afford. plus diesels engines last forever. if i were your friend, i would push you to get a 06/07 mega cab dually. its the right amount of truck for whatever you need.

those new rams do look sharp as hell with the scooped hoods.

Thanks for all the replies. Im 24 and I own my own tile and hardwood installation company. I am growing quite large now and a pickup is definately needed. It will be sad to see the type s go but I need to think future and life ahead. I will go check out the f150s tommorow and see how that goes. Still kind of leaning towards the 1500 sport. Im just a sucker for looks, hence why i went with the type s instead of the base tl.

See how is it people are comparing newer Ford Eco Boost vehicles with 6+ year old Chrysler vehicles? I agree with the majority here I cant stand older Chrysler products, but their newer vehicles have come a LONG way. So do a fair comparison here! I dont think any american car manufacturer was something to brag about even just a few years ago. The 2013 Ram will probably be damn impressive and all these people above have probably never even touched a 2011+ Chrysler product. Only reason im standing up for them is because like I said above my 2012 Cherokee Overland has been hands down the best vehicle I have owned. It makes some Lexus and BMW SUV's look lame. I say give them a chance is all :-)

Sorry to see the TL go but congrats on the new truck to come. I've never been a fan of any pickups, though I rarely haul anything my MDX can't handle. Merry Christmas and enjoy!

Hate to say this but you might be a sucker when it comes time to trade or sell the Dodge. Look at the history of resale and repairs on Dodge versus Ford and Chevy. Dodges just don't hold up in comparisons through the years.

If a ton of people have bad luck with a product why in the world would they give it a second chance with something as important as a vehicle?

We aren't. No one is comparing eco boost F150 in 2013 to 6 year old Dodge trucks.

the comparison is in what the odds game plays out to be - the reliability of 2011+ cars is unproven at this point, so all we can go on are more recent track records of the companies producing these newer vehicles.

Whose trucks over the past 10 years have been prone to more major mechanical failures? Dodge Ram or the F150?

So if you ask me what's been more reliable over a longer period of time/higher mileage, I'm telling you it's the F150. Given the highly transparent and visible nature of Ford's improved quality assurance in the media and reflected in their stock price over the past 4 years since the market crashed, I have a lot of confidence in them going forward.

Beyond consumer reports, there is just an overall better buzz about the improved quality, fit and finish of Ford products right now and that's largely due in part to word of mouth, for good reason because they are capturing an ever-increasing market share both in the US and internationally. That's been trending for years now. It isn't a new development in 2011 or 2012.

So if you asked me to put my money on what would be a better truck - the 2013 F150 or the 2013 Ram - I'm going to bet heavily on the F150. It can haul all the tile and hardwood flooring this guy can throw at it for his business, and it will probably be more reliable long-term.

p.s. regarding Jeeps my coworker has a 2012 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7 and it is very nice, I won't contest that

The Ford may very well be a better product in this case I have no idea and I completely understand what you guys are saying, I was just putting my word of mouth out because I have a new Chrysler product. No it doesnt have 150,000 miles, or a decade of proven use, but what I can say is its leaps and bounds better than what their products were just a couple years ago. I have never once looked into work vehicles so my opinion doesnt count much anyway, but for whats its worth we are very happy with our new Chrysler product and im a picky car guy. If their trucks are as nice I would certainly give them a chance if I were in the market. Thats all im saying :-)

I'd highly recommend not getting any Chrysler product. I was a Chrysler tech until midway this year. I would especially stay away from the 13 models since they have put on a ton of new features that they have never tried before. I'll go with everyone else and say look at a F150 with the Eco boost... I'd say more but I'm waiting for my turn in the bank right now..

I think it's funny how OP never asked anybody's opinion on which truck to get....
He simply asked about trade in tips.

Here's mine: don't tell dealer(even when they ask) that you have a trade in until you negotiated the price of new vehicle. Trust me. Once you negotiate the price you are comfy with, then hit them with the trade in. They will give you more for your trade in this way. Tell them you want X amount for trade in or you'll walk from deal. Always works...or you'll usually get close to what you need/want...
Good luck!

Nope because he puts them in properly to prevent it. It's not a problem with the block that causes it either. Coils nope. Never any issues.

Product-wise, I pretty much agree, but I'll always hold a certain amount of respect for Ford for not flying from Michigan to DC in a private jet and holding out a hand that just grasped a top shelf martini and asking for government subsidized bail out money.

I agree with that 100%. Some may not agree with me on this, but I personally agree with what Mitt Romney said that he would have allowed the auto manufacturers to go bankrupt and restructure on their own. Ofcourse Obama used the auto bailout throughout his campaign, but I dont really agree with it, then again I dont agree with a lot of what Obama does lol. I dont want to turn this into a political thing, but other huge companies go bankrupt without government and tax payers to the rescue. American Airlines, and pretty much every other airline go through it as well as countless other companies. Regardless of all that, american auto manufacturers have come back stronger than ever after all this and it really shows in their products.

Tacoma's are really sweet trucks and hold their value REALLY well. My dad had an 07 double cab. And my brother had had 2 of the same

They're awesome but the only problem is tacoma's aren't very big. If you need it for work, you probably need a full size like a Tundra. I don't have any experience with those but the are pretty sweet looking trucks.
