any bug and tar removers you can find at ur local pep boy or what not are pretty good. they don't hurt paint at all. they will remove ur wax however i think.

a clay bar and soap+water as lubricant. I use it to get tar, bugs, paint from the road, and even adhesive from dealer decals without any harm to the paint.

I use the clay bar by zaino. Just be sure to rewax the area after using it.

Its not a good plan to use the clay bar to remove tar .. a lot of tar has sand in it and the clay picks it up .. ruining the clay and also imbedding in the clay and scratching the car.

Best/safest/cheapest tar remover is Mineral Spirits aka Varsol aka Naptha. Soak a rag and gently apply it to the tar letting the solvent do the work .. don't be rubbing a lot cuz the sand in the tar is going to scratch.

You have to also watch some Bug & Tar removers as they have Xylene in them and that not really clear coat friendly stuff.

Mineral spirits paint thinner or charcoal lighter, which is the nearly the same, works very well to remove tar.
