Good Trade In??
So currently I have a 2005 Acura TL. Its Pearl White, 76k, and no Nav. I just recently moved to San Antonio, TX for the Air Force, and there's a 2008 Acura TL Type S with 86k in Austin, TX for $21494. From what I put into Autotrader.com, and from what the dealership is saying to me, it's looking like they want somewhere around $10,000 after the trade in. My TL has a small crack under the license plate, and the driver side mirror has some damage to where theres a small wavy red line because of damage to the defrost. Other than that it's in great shape cosmetically and mechanically. Good deal? Bad deal? The only thing that intimidates me in the 86k on the 2008. What do you all think? Just looking for some help since alot of you are experts when it comes to car values/maintenance/etc.etc.

I think you can get at least 11.5k for your car and that type s way overpriced. My friend got a type s with everything included taxes and fees for $23k. That type s is worth 17k at best.

Too many miles for me might be different for someone else. I know people who buy cars with 40ka miles and for me......that is too much. I prefer to buy a car that has mileage under 30k.
With that said..... if the car is in great shape and all maintenance has been done on time, it won't be a bad buy. However its not worth $21k. I would try to get them to give you 11.5k on your trade and offer 17k for the type s. The worst they can say is no.
Also keep in mind with a car that has 86kmileage miles the 100k service is coming up.

No big man, yeah its just hard to find a Type S for my price range, I guess I'll just wait another year and see what comes up.. thanks for the input. I'll throw that offer around, and see what happens. I mean, I myself am getting close to that 100k too.. haha.

Here's some numbers for you to digest:
Your TL's trade-in value is in this range: 12,400 (clean) and 10,600 (average).
The TL-S trade-in value is in this range: 18,700 (clean) and 17,300 (average). I would not pay more than 12-15 percent above these values.

I literally did this 3 times in a row on the same car at a local dealership a couple years ago. I think in 2009 it was, and there was a 2006 TL 6mt, non-nav, with 43k miles and they wanted $24k which was beyond absurd. I told them 19k and they wouldn't go below 21k. A month later the car was still on the lot, this time lowered to 21k and they called me up. I said now I will only pay you 18k. Time has passed, my price now also goes down. They sat on it.
another month passed, they called me up again with a sticker of 19k and at this point I may have been interested to negotiate but other things had come up.
The point is, just because a dealer tells you a price and says they can't/won't budge, doesn't mean the car will sell to someone else that same day for what they are asking. Chances are that car will sit on their lot and it will come down in price.
and honestly, the worst deals tend to be the ones you force. If you can only afford 15-17k for a type-s, in all honesty you really just need to wait it out. I was in the same boat and wanted a type-s but couldn't justify what they cost.
6 months later I found myself at a much much better job and other things aligned and all of a sudden you find yourself in a spot where you don't feel stressed about the cost - all you care about at that point is whether or not it is a good deal relative to the mileage, condition and age of the car. Whether it's a higher mileage TL that you find for 17k or a lower mileage that you find for 23k - it won't matter.
Be patient.

If you pay 10k.. then you better get some serious stuff out of it!
Thats a whole car!

That TL-S should not be above $17k, I test drove one about a month ago and I told the owner that if he willing to go down $17K and under, I am serious about buying car and not BS like other people. He told me "I have the car listed for $19,995 but we recently reduce to $18,995, I willing to work with you around $18,850" its a 08 TL-S with 86k miles CBP with Taupe interior (I hate that color combo), fog light lens cracked water got in there, left front TPMS death (won't send signal), steering wheel vibrate when driving at 40 mph (may be tire pressure not even or worst, rim(s) bend). The car listing in July and it is still listing now, he try to buy me into "you know this is a rare car right?" I told him "yes I do and because of this, it is a big problem to you. You won't sell this thing because not too many people take a looking to buy one unless they know Acura very well." He then told the sale man to get my contact down and give me a call. I told him before walking out "Call me when this car doesn't sell". I think trade in value for TL-S around my area is $19k for low mileage and mint condition, $17k for average and $13k from the auction house (God know what condition they are in). I kept looking and finally I stumble over a 07 MRP Type S 59k miles for $19k with Taupe interior (I hate the the interior color but I can't complaint more because the seat got replaced at 28k miles under factory warranty) . Keep looking man and you will find one that fit you best. GL with the hunt.

Also a 2nd deal breaker for me would be if the timing belt has not been changed. That would be another thousand at the dealer. Crazy.

i wouldn't trade into a higher mileage car that is younger than yours, but it's your car and you can do what you are comfortable with.
if you want to know the value of your car in terms of a better price...try carmax. they will usually give you more than what the dealer would in a trade in. appraisals are free and good for 7 days.
i thnk type-s models will sell a little more quickly than the base models b/c of demand. i really never see a type-s at my dealer lot last longer than a few weeks. we may say the price is high for this type-s but there is gonna be someone willing to pay that price and the dealer knows that. if it was a base model...then it might be a different story.

I would like to modify my "Never" statement.
In most cases I think a person should get what they want!
If you are in love with the TL-S then that is for you to decide.
In some cases, you may be forced to take a higher mileage car and if you are totally set on getting that particular model. Like If I want to buy an old IROC as a 2nd car, then it's probably going to have a lot of miles unless I pay a lot for one that was stored.
But as a general practice, If I trade, I want lower miles too..
But if you are a CEO or a movie star, then it's only money.. right?
I'd say, you really gotta love that TL-S.. haha

^^ Completely agree here. You have a car with reasonably low miles, know everything about the car (maintenance history and how it's been driven/cared for) and I assume paid in full. To trade for something with higher mileage and you don't know the maintenance history or how it was driven (or potentially abused) makes no sense. You're going to pay on the order of $10,000, lose your reliable car, and just get admission to the club (as others had mentioned, you may have to do some maintenance on the TL-S and it will need the 105K service before your current car will). To me, it's a bad trade (especially for more money). As for me, I'm kind of a 'buy and hold' person. I'll keep my TL until it doesn't run anymore (or if it got wrecked, which would really pain me as I don't want to make car payments for quite a while).
