Glove box damper

I noticed a little black arm attached to the glove box door. The tech manual says its a damper. Since I bought this car new in '05 the glove box has always flopped down.

Is this damper working on anyone else car?
Or does damper have another meaning I don't know about?

My damper is not very strong, so it flops down if there is anything in the glove box, like the heavy owner's manual. Remove all the items and give it a try. I do wish it offered more resistance.

Is it connected? Next time you change the cabin filter give it a close look.

The glove box should NOT just flop down. The damper should slow it down some.
