Getting too old for a manual transmission

I love my 3G 6MT however I find my left knee hurting more and more. I am constantly changing the seat position, the pain will go away for a while then start up again. Sadly I must say this will be my last manual transmission. I will be a straight auto man without the auto-stick.

PS

Actually I think lifting weights and riding my bike is adding wear and tear to my knees. maybe I should stop exercising to keep my baby.

aren't the new ferrari's all paddle shifter auto with DSG ? MY grandfather has this, his knee has deteriorated pretty badly. IS your upper body heavy? His upper body is heavy and he walks a lot and it it what caused the wear.

might want to visit a physical therapist or sports doc and see if they can give you some exercise advice.

I know the feeling, drove sticks for 35 years and has been auto ever since.

Well let's see. I've been at manuals for 50 years (truth be known I'm 65... Ok, enough with the jokes). I was diagnosed in November 2009 with osteoarthritis in both knees. But I can get around and I still cannot imagine leaving a manual behind in favor of an automatic.

Before you consider knee replacement surgery, you might want to check out this product and talk with an orthopedic doctor. This product might help you.... it has helped me but I also know that at some point, I am going to have to have both knees replaced.

That pain is not from age-- it's due to some physiological condition.

Absolutely agree that OP should get that knee examined by an orthopedic doc first. The doc will then determine if physical therapy or some other treatment will resolve the issue.

Don't stop exercising and potentially risk your overall health. Get treatment for your knees and enjoy your health AND your MT.

i'd think your bike would have more to do with your pain than your car. The bike is by far a heavier load on your knee.

Your seat adjusted properly?

So your young enough to bike and lift weights but too old to step on a pedal to shift ? Doesn't compute.
You could be using bad form lifting weights ( on squats and/or deadlifts) and not properly warming up. If you warm up and stretch before and after lifting and practice correct form your knees and joints should be STRONGER not weaker.

This is my first manual and I used to regret it when I kept on killing the car in traffic. I absolutely love it now. I want to keep this car for a long time because my next car will probably going to be an auto because I want to try out a SUV.

I know this pain very well. I have a pain in my left knee that only happens when I drive a stick for more than a week or so. Even when I was a competitive powerlifter or when I was training for a marathon, my knee was perfect. I've never had knee problems except when I drive a manual and it's pretty severe pain. Once I get out of the car it's gone in a couple minutes.

I would definitely stay active and get rid of the manual if it's bothering you that much. Health is a lot more important than which transmission type you have.

Southernboy- You're hard core lol. If you don't mind me asking, when you go out with the wife say to dinner or something, do you usually take her 5at or your 6mt?

Or he's not doing the right excercies. He can do all of the the above and still have patellar tendinitis from NOT doing leg extensions, and for other reasons not listed.

Best advice is to see an ortho doc and talk things out. PT will/can help depending on the diagnosis.

I'm 28 and my left knee has been killing me lately. I think it's because I went from my TL to a pos Sentra. My next car will most likely be auto, since an E55 is only auto and 335s are faster with paddles.

If the vehicle you get is faster as an auto, I say there's no shame at all.

Yeah, anal might be a better word.

It depends where we're going. More often than not, we take her TL or maybe the Ranger pickup (the health and welfare of my doors and such takes precedence). We're going to dinner tomorrow evening and I'll most likely take mine because the parking is fine and I need to get some more miles on this oil change so I can do one within the next 4 weeks. We're taking my '04 on a trip in early May and I will need to change the oil beforehand.

I can imagine that if I was in the market for female companionship, I might have some problems. Due to my analness, I'd be one them about slamming my doors, no fiddling with A/C or radio controls, no leaning on the car, no perfume spraying inside, no this, not that. They'd want a quick trip back home. Which means I would rent a car for a date and leave my baby safe and sound at home.

Yano .. its funny .. when your 16 to 45 its stick all the way ... then pretty soon depending on where you live the stick gets a little tiresome, then you start thinking auto .. I know I did.

I have had autos now for 10 + years and have had the pleasure of driving a stick for short periods ( son-in-laws Ferarri and 69 Camaro ) and when all is said and done its nice to get back in the TL and the auto.

Last Oct I bought a new car for winter .. econo job ... 5 Speed std and the novelty was fun for a few days then I was wishing I'd have spent the ext grand for the auto.

TL comes out of winter storage this week ... can't wait for both it and the auto.

BTW I'm 66 and all knees/hips etc are ok so that isn't an issue ... Just got tired of the shifting.

go see an orthopod, and a really good PT (i'm in health care, i know a lot about these kind of things).

not exercising is a bad idea. and there is nothing in the literature that says cycling is bad for your knees, there is also no literature out there that says running is bad for your knees either. if anything continued activity in moderation is your best bet along with any weight management that may be needed.

its not what you do that hurts you, its how you do them. however if you have significant enough physiological issues going on with your knees....then that's a different beast all together.

driving auto is nice in bumper to bumper traffic (its a nice change when i have loaners), but my enjoyment right now comes from driving MT with little traffic. thankfully i dont' sit in the hwy parking lots on my commutes home.

Europeans are generally thinner and healthier than us. There's a strong correlation between obesity and osteoarthritis.

There are people in America that drive stick into their 80s too. I've spent a good amount of time in Europe and much of it is lack of availability. How much time have you spent over there?

Don't go because no matter how much fun you think it is, it's 10x better than you can imagine and you'll always want to go back. You're like a celebrity just because you're American but I quickly learned when asked where I'm from to say California. They treat it like it's an entirely different country. I stayed in Tripolis, Greece for 2 months and it was unreal. The girls, the parties, everything. I don't know why but I liked Greece a lot.

Overall much better shape and younger looking for longer. I guess another word would be healthier. Obviously they're not all supermodels but there's a much higher percentage of extremely good looking girls. Also depends on which country. The Greeks seem to have a little more overweight girls but they have a really distinctive (in a good way) look. The Italians didn't age. The Greeks are kinda hairy lol. Unibrows are common in the small villages where they don't get out much. I saw little old ladies that had probably never seen a television with more of a beard than I can grow.... But the good Greek girls are some of the best I've ever seen.

I personally stayed away from the tourist areas because I had no interest in meeting other Americans while over there. It was so nice being able to go out and girls coming up to you and just being normal, no games, just introducing themselves and having a conversation.

The one thing that caught me off guard was in Greece I was at a club and this very attractive girl came over and after about 5 minutes she asked if I wanted to "sleep". I was thinking why would I want to sleep, I'm not tired and it's early. Then it hit me what she meant lol. Things are definitely different over there, the girls pretty much say what they want without beating around the bush. You don't have to go after the girls, all you have to do is stand there and you will have several trying to talk to you. Those trips seem like another lifetime ago. When I start thinking about the things that happened it seems like I'm looking at someone else's life.

I think we went off topic.

I love manuals and had vowed to never buy another automatic but the newest generation of dual clutch automated manual are getting pretty close to the level of control that I love so much in my 6MT. By the time I'm ready to buy another car they may just be good enough and smooth enough at starting that I'd consider one. Truth be told, I could care less about actually using a clutch, it's having the car shift only when I want it to and the added efficiency and performance. The best of the DSG transmissions seem to have turned the tables on those counts.

Every time I think your posts can't get more ignorant you out do yourself. So Americans are lazy and Europeans aren't. Do you ever get tired of spewing ignorant bullshit blanket statements? Let's see your stats backing up your claim.... wait, that's right its only one person's worthless opinion.

It is very much availability and cost driven. I had this discussion many times over there.

Like it or not, we have turned into a lazy society and are ranked @1 in that category and also #1 in the obesity catehory:
http://www.thedailybeast.com/galleri...st-countries/#

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/he...health-obesity

This has gotten a little off subject, but the bottom line is that when the knee or knees are done for, no amount of exercise or therapy will help and one needs to do what they can to delay a knee replacement until it's absolutely necessary.
