Gas cap holder

Most of the TL fanatics in this forum probably know this BUT I was filling up the other night with another 3rd gen TL just across from me. Of course we started chatting about our cars and all the clever features and etc. The other driver started to complain that with all the technology in the car that Acura didn't provide a fuel cap holder and that the cap just hung from its retaining strap. That's when I showed him the little keyhole slot in the inside of the door and the ball on the gas cap. Slide the ball into the hole and the cap is held out of the way and off of the car body.
Thought I'd mention it in case you didn't know. MERRY CHRISTMAS and drive safe.

Tell the guy also, to snip the cord - saves a lot of dangling caps which will wreck your paint.

Rontatuaf - not a 'dis' at all.
I find it funny that, the owner never noticed the holder. It amazes me the amount of money some spend and don't realize the basic things....

Oh Merry Christmas!

My delivery orientation lasted for at least an hour and the salesman never mentioned this feature. I did figure it out all by myself however.

You can't tell everybody everything, it doesn't do any good if you do. Need I bring up the coin holder thread?

It's in the manual but it doesn't explain it very well.

I removed my cap from its strap and the strap from the filler neck, then just stored in in the spare tire depression. I set the cap on the concrete next to the pump and my glasses so as not to forget it and to not endanger my paint. I've done the same thing with the last several cars I've owned.

I didn't know about this feature until I read it here and I had already owned my car for about a month. It pays to check the posts at least once a day because you'll never know what you can learn, especially if you're too lazy to read the manual!

It may not be the real design

My 02-TL has a slot on the little door where you would place the cap. So I was surprised that this is not the case with the 05-TL. After a while I did figure out to hang the little plastic cord ball on that little slit of a thing. But I just can't imagine that it is the real design. There has got to be a better way. With all the high tech we have in this car, Acura may have goofed on a low tech thing here.

Your from the south, right? Seems to be a lot of work to avoid the whole reason Honda did it this way in the first place. Mfg way is quick, clean, doesn't scratch ne-thing and makes sense. It may work for you but seems, wel.... backwards.

Gas Cap

I found that there is kind of a shelf next to the fill opening. I just rest it there. Seems to work fine for me, you might give it a try?

The biggest objection raised about our gas cap holder is that it is not obvious like all of the other holder designs we are used to. This means that the people from New Jersey and other states where you can't fill up your own tank, and people who use full-serve stations, are at the mercy of the fill-up guy/gal, who, not knowing what else to do with it, lets it drop and hit the fender and stay there.

Those people might be better off cutting the tether so as to discourage this possibility.

How about a sign on the inside of the gas cap door which says: "Hang cap here". Will they get it, or will they take their hat off and hang it on the door? This could be a good intelligence test for gas station attendants.

To ndabunka;

"Your from the south, right?"... "may work for you but seems, wel.... backwards."

Do I detect a slight bit of "aloofness" in these comments? If so, I take serious objection to same.

I shall investigate Acura's little paint-saving and cap-saving item to see if it meets with my acceptance, then move accordingly.

I've only filled up once but didn't realize this. I had left the cap on the "shelf" inside the fuel area.

thanks!

That Bib is huge! Guess it works pretty well, though.

I just jam the filler cap in the handle of the gas hose. It keeps the gas flowing while I clean the windows.

Ok, I feel like an idiot. I've had the car for a month now and never noticed the holder. Each time I filled up, I wondered why Honda would design something that would just dangle and possibly damage the body. I ended up holding the cap while I filled up! I'm sure glad I have this forum

Do the gas stations around you not have the little thingy as part of the pump that does that for you?

In Canada they remove them. I got yelled at last week by an attendant for using the tank cap.

That's a pain in the arse! Come to think of it, I believe you are right....the last time I filled up in Canada I was in St-Jovite and it was -30 out. I was not amused at having to stand there holding the pump!

Griot's sells something similar, I believe. Probably most of the standard auto catalogues that come in the mail have something along those lines.

Quick fix:

Using a small brush and some bright orange paint paint the ball on the cap tether and paint a small stripe on the inside cover to accent the keyway. This should help make it clear to gas jockeys without looking horrible.

I was also surprised to see such a low tech but workable solution. I think lots of cars will adopt a similar low cost solution pretty soon.
