Garage door size

So I live in the northeast and have never had a garage. I recently purchased a house which has one. I never thought to measure as I thought garage doors were standardized.

Tried pulling in today during the final inspection and it was surprisingly tight. Thought a 3G TL would slide right in, not a huge car.

Opening measures about 7'11" across. Do I have an abnormally narrow garage?

12x20 and 14x20

That's what Google is turning up

So at 7'11", you're 4'1" from normal size.

OUCH. Really a last minute negative on the house. Never thought to check.

I believe what Undying was giving you was the overall dimensions of a single car garage and not the door. I just went out and measured my garage doors and they are 9' wide and 8' tall. My garage is a two car at 24' x 24', which I know is a little bigger than most. The height of my garage is a little crazy as well at 13'-6." So you are about a foot narrower than mine.

Hope that helps -

sounds like you have one of those typical little garages in an older house. our lone garage space dimensions is 18'x10' with a 9'x7' door (this is standard door size for most garages in my area). the actual opening of the doorway itself...i don't know the exact dimensions but...let's say i have maybe 3-4 inches of space from my side mirrors to the opening. the TL is about 72" wide IIRC. it's tight getting in my garage. as far as door opening, i can get to the first stop on the door in the front...i won't even venture to test opening the rear doors (they won't make it to the first stop). we actually put a piece of foam pad for the driver's door on the wall so we don't inadvertantly whack the brick wall. the passenger side of the car has a little more space.

don't even think to put an MDX in that space. she's got another 6 inches of width on the TL. my dealer mentioned to me that they get a lot of MDX owner's coming in with busted side mirrors b/c they clipped their garage.

The Mrs. did that in our MDX on the way out, not on the way in. Fortunately the mirror folded forward and didn't snap off. The decorative door frame cracked a little but really not that noticeable.

LOL - sideways. I'd like to see that. However I think I know what you mean.

In older homes a common size door is 8x7 (this is 15-20 yr old homes). On the other hand the newer homes have started to become standard at 9x7-9x8.

When I was drafting single car garage the minimum sq of a garage was at least 260 sq ft which would leave just enough for a car but not much more (im talking small boxes or a vacuum)

My TL fits in a one-car garage (townhouse built around 1992), although I do pull in slowly because the mirrors pass close to the door frame. No doubt it's affected by the snowblower being on the left side near the door so it narrows the entry a tad (this is a bigger nuisance for my wife going around from the passenger side to the door into the house as she has to squeeze past).

If a TL won't fit at all, it sounds like a REALLY narrow opening! Older house, perhaps?

1950's. It can make it in, but is tight... may just need to get used it. Widen once you get in so there is room. It's a double. 2nd bay is actually in inch smaller!

I have a similar problem at my new place- the garage door itself is ok, but the concrete holding the lawn off the driveway (makes walls entering into the garage, which is subterranean) is caving in, so my UA6 has about two inches total clearance at the "squeeze point"!

I must confess I already put a nasty gouge in the starboard rear wheel arch while trying to back in just the other night. That scraping sound is soul-crushing!
