I like to hammer an awl into the end of the filter and let it drain out into my drain pan. Once it drains out, I use the awl or a screwdriver to unscrew the filter from block. I only hand-tighten the new ones, but they always get stuck on there pretty tight.
I use the awl again to pop a few holes into the anti-drainback valve/rubber disk so all of the oil drains out of the filter before I toss it in the trash (tied in a plastic bag).

Terry, you ask for "fool-proof". "Nothing is fool-proof for the truly talented fool" (that means me). I just unscrew the oil filter slowly and the oil flows down the side of the filter for awhile. I use a paper towel and scoop out the oil sitting in the control arm. Never bothered me to do that. If it did bother me, I suppose I'd angle in a short piece of plywood (or thin flexible plastic) to channel the oil way from the arm down into the oil drain pan. Bottom line: It's a DIY oil change and you're saving some cash doing it yourself, plus you know "4.5 qts" doesn't mean 5.0 qts. Gettin' dirty is part of game!

I'm good at changing my oil easy, clean & lazy style.
Only change the oil when the car is 100% cool, have all the stuff, and do in the morning.
I take a sharp center punch and tap 2 holes in the filter, one in the center, and one in the very outer edge, at the lowest point to the ground.
Walk away and let drain for 20 minutes or so, then continue on with the rest of the oil change.
The only oil that spill when the filter is removed is on the engine cradle / front lower sub-frame, and only a little bit.
