Folks running 5w-30 or 10w-30: Report your Fuel Economy

For the folks out there who are running a 0w-30, 5w-30, or 10w-30 instead of the recommended 5w-20, please answer the following questions:

1) Brand, Model, and Grade of Engine Oil you are using.

2) How much fuel efficiency loss did you experience while using this oil; note the fuel efficiency differences during the beginning of the drain AND toward the end of the drain, as some oils will thin during use.

3) Did you notice any difference in power.

Thanks in advance,
Michael

AMSOIL 5w30

Fuel went up city 17 up to 19, Highway 26 to 29. Efficiency of oil lasted the same for me.

3) Did you notice any difference in power.
With the change from the factory oil to the new oil the engine seemed to run smoother and responded alot quicker.

Currently using Havoline 5w20 GF4 getting 26 mpg mixed (29ish hwy, 20ish around town)

Was using Royal Purple 5w30, getting 24 mpg mixed, 19ish around town, 28-29 hwy

Car has 10,000 so some of the better mileage these days could be from break-in.

Always changed at 3000 or MID = 50% whichever comes first, so no benefits for synthetic with me.

How long did you or do you usually run the oil? Was this the API SM/GF-4 version?

Motorcraft Synthetic Blend, 10w-30 (can't be beat, do a little research on it)

Can not see a difference in fuel efficiency.

3) Did you notice any difference in power.

Engine seems to run a little smoother, but not a huge difference!

Do you know if this affects the warranty on the TL? I've been considering using the Amsoil 0w-30 after my factory drain.

Amsoil and other oils fine

I run Asmoil as well. It won't bother your warranty. Check the requirements in your manual - it's fine. I do run their 5w-20 instead of a 10 or 0w-30

I believe the 5w20 only comes in the XL - Extended Life line, which has a recommended change interval of 7,500 miles. I'm confident that the 5w20 meets Acura's standards. However, I would prefer to use 0w30 because of the longer change intervals. Have you thought about switching?

I'll stick with the 5w-20 for a couple reasons. Most carmakers specify a couple SAE grades and viscosity ranges. The Acura is different. My manual calls for only 5w-20 - with no specific grade other than "energy saving" and "for gasoline engines." While I'm sure that the 0w-30 is fine, the higher viscosity will not flow as freely as a 20 weight - which they are calling for. Would they deny a warranty claim for 0w-30? Probably not. I generally change synthetics at 5k miles - but may extend that a bit, based on what the oil sensor says. I also get an occasional used-oil analysis from Blackstone labs - especially to get a baseline when I'm switching to a different oil. I just started on the Amsoil, and I'll have that analyzed when I change it. If the grade has stayed fairly stable (near the 20 weight) I'll stick with the 5w-20. I get about 23.5 MPG for mostly suburban driving.
