First Chip

Damnit....I'm driving behind some giant gravel hauler today on the 5, and it starts showering down little rocks like crazy. Now I've got my first chip on the car and its gonna drive me nuts.

What are people's thoughts on touch up paint??

Also, is this further evidence that I am gonna have to sacrifice the clean look of the nose to a ClearBra sort of product???

Ouch! Now that truly sucks!! Anywho, I've had great success with touch-up paint on relatively small nicks and chips....or should I say the guy in my work building garage who details my car has had good luck. He thoroughly cleans the area first and applies a few coats of the touch-up paint. My current car is black and I normally can't tell where the nick originally was unless I get right on top of the area and feel it with my hand.

Sucks to get the first chip/nick/ding but it happens sooner or later to all of us. Just pray that it always is a nick and not a dent requiring professional body work.

Ouch...sorry to hear about that. Reminds me of when I got my Jeep Grand Cherokee back in 94 and took off on a 6 week cross country trip with it about a week after I took delivery. Got caught in a hailstorm in the Badlands of South Dakota (3 days into the trip) that peppered the jeep with golf ball sized hail. Shattered the tail lights, tore off the rubber from the windshield wipers and dented every single part of the body with about 50-60 dimples. The trailer I was pulling fared even worse :-)

At least on my Saab, they wanted your VIN so they could batch match your color on your car. You probably knew this though. I just like to babble sometimes...babble....babble....

This guy on Acura-cl.com sells a Acura touch up paint pen. It has the paint on one side and clear coat on the other. I got one from him but havn't used it yet. Hopefully I wont need it anytime soon. The stuff that Acura sells in the nail polish looking bottles was an awful match on my previous car so good luck

Watch you don`t chip or scrape any of the plastic parts. I scraped the aero kit about an inch behind the right rear tire. Trying to touch up the black scrape on a WDP with the factory paint stinks. Very thin to cover, even with multiple coats

He's got some competition now on Ebay. You can get a pen from him for $13.99 (including S&H) or from his competitor for $13.50 (including S&H)

Got a small chip on mine also from an individual that thinks the shoulder on an on-ramp is actually for traffic - and proceeds to 'kick-up' every stone/peeble on the shoulder.

Anyway - the Acura TL touch-up paint is quite good actually. I would recommend looking into Langka (R). I bought a bottle
(19.95) - it is a liquid that when applied to a recommended cloth
and rubbed back-and-forth across the applied paint (after drying) removes the excess paint ('blob') and gets the painted area
quite even with the surrounding manufacturer's paint. Did a really nice job.

I picked up a bottle of WDP touch up on Monday for a minor nick inside my rear door. The Acura WDP touch-up is mainly clear coat and the pearl... Very little white. It did not cover the gray primer at all.
I believe someone else with WDP mentioned that by the time the WDP touch-up covered the dark chip, he had a heck of a gob of paint,,,, looked worse than the chip. My attempt confirmed this.
I plan to see if Acura/Honda has a solid white to use as a "base-coat" then cover that with the WDP touch-up. That should look pretty good. If anyone beets me to it, let us know how it works..

You should ask your car dealer to throw a bottle of touch-up paint. I always got one when I buy a car from dealer, even pre-owned (Integra & CL for my kids). The touch-up paint works ok on small chips, but have to be patient. Also should work in heated garage in winter time, I was told these work best at temperatures > 60 degrees F.

Anyone here try the touch up pen that Acura sells. I think that touching up a chip with the paint and then covering it with clear coat should work really well. Can anyone confirm how well this works?

Another WDP owner here. I got my first door ding yesterday. It's minor, pretty low on the door, and I knew it was inevitable, but its a drag just the same.

Please let me know what you find out about good touch up methods. My ding doesn't need to be touched up, but I want to be prepared for my first hood chip.

Thanks.
