Exposed styrofoam in Doors?

I just noticed this today. Maybe you all know it, but I have not heard of it.

If you open the Driver's door and while sitting in the seat, you look at the hinge area. You can see gray styrofoam. It is used for noise reduction, but I would not have expected to see it so exposed. I have always seen that area covered...usually wax it. You can move it a little.

Looks to me like a place to catch water.

Is this normal, or did they forget something on my TL?

It's normal. Not too obvious on my ABP car, but it is exposed.

Regards,

See it too.

Yep, mine is the same way. It's for sound and air management. I've notice it on a one or two other makes of cars also.

I noticed a while ago. I actually appreciate it. It helps with noise management, I'm sure, but also keeps crap from accumulating in there. On some cars that area is open and leaves and road debris get in there. After a while with that wet garbage in there the fenders can start to rust. I don't think that will be a problem for the TL since the styrofoam doesn't absorb water.
