exhaust

I just installed the mufflers and resonator today. Cut the tips off the stock mufflers and welded them onto the magnaflows. The tone is deeper but not loud at all. I left the mid muffler on to keep the tone smooth, although I think I can take it off to get a little more noise if wanted.

Out of curiosity, why didn't you go with the stainless steel magnaflows? (Not that it makes a difference..just wondering).

Any chance of you being able to post a sound clip?

I wish I did get the SS magnaflows...didnt think about it at the time. It was hard enough for me to track down these mufflers from my supplier so I just decided to jump on the regular ones. Im still trying to get a sound clip ready for posting. Worst comes to worst ill just get the SS mufflers and put them on.

If you could provide more reviews, it would be wonderful and helpful. Thanks.

Being the guinea pig with the mufflers, I would suggest opting for the SS magnaflow mufflers and getting the inlet/outlet the next size down. It wasnt so much of a problem when I was welding the inlet gaps, but i wanted to keep the stock tips and, as evident by the pictures, there is a good size gap to fill. I decided to just spot weld the tips on until I was sure I was going to stay with the system because if I did want to change back I wanted to be able to remove the tips from the magnaflows with relative ease. I think im going to buy the SS mufflers and then swap them out again. Once I put the SS in there I will fully weld the tips onto the mufflers. Im still trying to get a sound clip up...I guess the best way to describe the sound is deep, mellow and smooth. Its got a lot of bass to it, although doesnt really affect the interior noise at all.

what would the difference be between the aluminized ones that you used to the SS mufflers?? is it just looks??

Subinf,

Nice mod!

What is the ballpark cost for this project? 2 stainless mufflers and the cost to have a shop do the welding work?

It looks like the mufflers can be unbolted 12 inches up the exhaust line. Is that right? The Magnaflows need hangars welded on as well?

All things being equal, a stainless steel exhaust system will outflow an aluminzied one, because SS retains heat better. Since less heat is radiated, the exhaust gases will stay hotter, and hotter gas = higher velocity = more power.

My price book doesnt show how much the SS mufflers are...my cost on the ones I put on my car were around 65 each...they list for somewhere around 120-140. I assuem the SS mufflers run about 30 or 40 dollars more. It took me an hour to install the mufflers and the resonator. I guess a shop would charge about 2 hours labor to get it done...maybe an hour an a half. Call around and see what quotes you get.

Oh yeah...the magnaflows will need J-hooks welded onto them in place of the factory hangers. Also, it was easiest for me, on the driver side, to cut the old muffler out pretty close to the muffler and then put the new one up, tac it in place and then unbolt it from the car to finish the weld. The passenger side doesnt have a flange so it was a little bit harder to get that side in.
