Engine air filter replacement

Hi all,

I am in need of a replacement air filter. The OEM one is so expensive and it seems that I go through them very frequently.

Has anyone found one that works well and is less of a hit to the wallet?

Please name the filter manufacturer as well as the part #. Also be sure to add your comments on how good or bad it is as I'm sure it will help others on this site.

Thanks!

I got one from Autozone yesterday. Duralast...I looked it up under 05 Acura TL..it think it was $10.50
How it works? Its cleaner than the once green partially black one that was in there before. And works fine until I decided on a intake to get

I'm a bit skeptical with the K&N filters.

I have heard that some things get past the filters.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Any others?

One of the reasons that the stock air filter for the TL is expensive is the fact that it is a oil-wetted/dry element filter.. rather unique in the industry. What this means is that on the side facing the outside intake, the filter is oil-wetted and on the side facing the throttle body, the element is dry. This does a very good job of keeping the intake air stream clean while at the same time, keeping any oil residue from entering the throttle body area and intake.

BTW, K&N filters are oil-wetted through and through (they're very thin so this would be really hard to do any other way - it's either going to be oil-wetted or it's not).

Purolator has some good products and they list both the engine air filter and the cabin air filter for the TL.

Southernboy,
The new Purolator (btw they got bought out by Bosch) PureOne air filters use a similar "oiled" setup.

I'd use the least expensive, reasonably good quality, air filter you can find. AutoZone's brand or FRAM, maybe even Purolator Premium Plus, comes to mind. As long as the seal is good, and the filter fits well, the filtration should be good.

Remember, an air filter needs to have a slight coating of dirt on it in order for it to filter most effectively, so do not change your air filter too often. Every 30-50K is fine on paved roads unless you lived in the desert...

I don't know if this may help anyone but I just picked up an OEM filter from Devan Acura in Norwalk CT.

The price was $25.00 which is actually a pretty good price. Curry Acura wanted $39.00 which is insane.

I picked up two of the filters because it was such a great price.

Thanks for all the help though.

Look at your existing filter before buying an aftermarket one. I brought one and then realized the store had the wrong filter listed for the TL - in three different brands! I eventually bought one from my dealer for under $25.

According to their website, the Purolater p/n is A25585. They list a number of auto parts store chains that carry their filters.

I have just changed mine this past weekend on my 2005TL (24,240Km).

I have used a Hastings Filters part # AF1254

Filter fit is perfect and I made sure to put synth grease on the bolt's thread that secures the cover (just enough to lubricate the threads) to prevent them from seizing up.

Best regards from Montreal, Canada

The K&N is only $40... and i've already cleaned mine 3 times. There is always construction somewhere in the Seattle area.... gets clogged up quicker than you think. PM me if you wanna know where i got mine. i got mine online, no shipping, and bought the recharger kit cheap. under $50 for everything.

I got the K&N right away - for $40 you can't beat it - pays for itself quickly. Some dealers will tell you it's not recommended - some argue it lets more crap through (not if you install it properly and oil it after cleaning) - some argue that the element is less restrictice and can screw up your oxygen sensor (when I had a Maxima that was the argument but never happened). Have had zero problems for almost 20,000 miles with it.
