DVD-A Question, Dual Layer SACD?

I know that DVD-A and SACD are not compatible, but my question is...

The new Pink Floyd, Dark Side Of The Moon 30th Anniversary Edition is some kind of Dual Layer SACD. To quote a website...

The Super Audio CD (SACD) features two disc layers. One layer contains a standard version of the album that works on any CD player. The other layer includes high-resolution stereo and a 5.1 surround version of the recording that works on SACD-compatible DVD players and home theater systems. Both layers employ SACD's Direct Stream Digital (DSD) encoding process that samples the music 64 times faster than CD for unprecedented fidelity.

SO if I play the SACD on the CD with just the 2 Channel information side, will I notice any difference in sound quality over the normal CD I've had for years?

Does this make sense to anyone?

We don't have any way of knowing if you would notice a difference between the standard stereo CD (which one? original CD, the Shine On box set remaster, the MFSL remaster, ???) and the stereo on the SACD.

I guess it's just the original CD.

I think you'd have to see for yourself if you can tell a difference. Personally, I think you'd have to have an awfully keen ear and a very high fidelity setup to discern the difference. In casual listening, I doubt you'd step into any room with a stereo SACD playing and think to yourself "that sounds too good to be a CD, must be an SACD".

A good 5.1 mix, on the other hand, is pretty obvious.

Yes, I'd love to have a way to convert SACD 5.1 to DVD-A 5.1. I'd buy a lot more than the 1 SACD that I have if I could do that.

But the record companies DRM'd their way out of my patronage by making it impossible for me to play SACD content that I purchase legally on my DVD-A car player.

There are DSOTM DTS CDs floating around out there... They are made from an old quadraphinc 8-track tape. They still sound great in my opinion if you get a chance to get one. Regarding the hybrid SACD. The standard cd protion of this disc should have the same quality as any other remastered cd it's just how much you like the mastering.

Re: DVD-A Question, Dual Layer SACD?

If you play a HYBRID SACD on a normal CD player (which is what you'd be playing on your TL), then you'll be hearing the standard CD version of the disc, which should be identical to the normal CD release of the album.

In other words, unless you have an SACD player hooked up using analog interconnects to your preamp/receiver, you'll be hearing the standard CD recording... exact same quality.
