Question Dual Mass Flywheel

Is anyone familiar with the dual-mass flywheel that's used on the '04 TL 6MT? Can anyone describe it, the theory behind it and if its been used before or if its an Acura first?

Dual mass flywheel. What I wouldn't give to work with a group that comes up with ideas like that. I also am curious about the theory and how it works.

Thought that was part of the clutch and has been in use since the Legend 6MT.

I did a search on google for dual mass flywheels and found out some interesting information.

Apparently DMFWs began life in diesels to smooth out their the harmonics from their power stroke.

The reason they're used is:
Eliminate excessive transmission gear rattle, making driving comfortable at any speed; Reduce shift effort; Increase fuel economy.

The downside is as was previously stated; If you have to do a clutch the very expensive DMFW has to be replaced as well - just go easy on the clutch.

There was an interesting thread on an Audi forum about DMFW - someone had to replace theirs at an early point in the car's life.

www.luk.de has information on the design of dmfw and why they are used. According to luk many Europian cars now use dmfw to reduce vibration at low speeds in higher gears.
