Driving Without the Engine Cover ....

.... Any trouble doing this for a couple of days?

I understand I might get a little more engine noise. I just want to make sure I won't create a heat or mechanical problem.

TIA.

I've done that plenty in my 2000 TL, when I was painting the cover.

You will not even notice a difference, no worries.

Yeah, I think I've seen someone else drive without their cover and don't think it's a big deal really. Are you painting the cover?

Man, nothin' gets past you guys. At this point it's too early to tell whether I am painting it or F'ing it up. We'll see in a few days.

Let's keep this between us, huh? Shhhh.

Thermoblock intake spacer users find that removal of the engine cover promotes cooling- takes the lid off the engine! Been running my gen2 without it for months. Noise?- no thats the sound of modified intake pulling air into the engine~

Gen3rs- contact desper- his 05TL is losing ALL its mods in prep for sale, including CF engine cover

I meant secret from SWMBO*

It's nothing special. I'll post pics if it looks OK.

actually, i think its better off. they are STRICTLY aesthetic

In fact, i think they TRAP heat in. especially the ones on the side near the pulley & belts. engine might "breathe" better without em my

I've heard, but I'm not sure, that the main reason new cars have the plastic covers is to protect stupid owners from the high voltage ignition systems used in modern engines. Supposedly the likelihood of a spark jumping through the wire and into say, some guy pointing out his new engine to his buddies, is high enough and with a significant enough chance of bodily harm that the manufacturers feel it's worth covering their asses.

That said, if you can manage to keep your hands off the ignition leads while the car is running, you should probably be ok.

The more stuff they put in the way- the less likely you are to do maitenance yourself- and take it to the dealer instead! -where they charge for the extra time to remove covers---
just try to get to your brake master cylinder!!!

I removed all of the engine covers and put them in the basement. All they do is cover up a very nice looking engine compartment and create extra steps when I want to do something. I think I saved 3 or 4 pounds and the car handles much better because of it. LOL

I've had my covers off for months. I think it releases the heat that the covers trap under the engine bay. It doesn't hurt anything, trust me.

I havent had engine covers on my car for well over a year or so. Only time I install them is for show....thats it. Engine remains cooler without em frankly. 99.9% of the time I run with no covers in there whatsoever though.

I like the covers on! Makes it look cleaner but that's just my opinion

What color are you doing bearcat? Put on alot of thin layers and then alot of clear coat. Also, paint the rest of the covers black(or any other color you like) and make sure you clear coat those as well Well, unless you're doing a flat paint look but here's how mine looks clear coated up

Or you could get creative and do something like this?

I'm excited for your results!

I've been running with mine off for this exact reason! People wouldn't realize how much heat gets trapped under the engine cover and the other plastic casings.

I appreciate EVERYONE'S comments - honest.

BUT, my cover will be on, at least for the foreseeable future. Too much work to leave the damn thing in the garage - I'm emotionally invested, you might say.

Preview in the Photo Gallery. Finsihed Pics later this week.

X2

I put my MB CF shroud on for shows, and will probably install my NBP cover for the winter, to keep that heat in. These covers REALLY keep the heat trapped, so summer is and winter is .

I had mine off during the summer. There was a little more injector noise when standing next to the car with it idling. Nothing a normal person would notice.

this might be a myth or something but i heard that when the engine is on fire the cover on top melts over it putting out the fire. Does it make sense?

^^^ it IS 2007. Who knows. Maybe it DOES help with keeping the fire under control for a TIME BEING.

Not the plastic shield. The hood liner (attached to the hood) is fire retardant and is supposed to come down and help smother or at least slow down a fire.

you're right it is 2007. If it were maybe 5-10 years down the road I would consider it a possibility, but considering that it is 2007, the engine cover on the TL does not keep the fire under control. It just melts in the fire, it may slow it down, but the time that it "slows" the fire down is negligible.

I was thinking removing the cover and maybe cutting a hole in the hood over top of the intake manifold might actually help with engine bay temps and looks nice if done right. It's funny because I have a guy looking to trade me 18s for my stock wheels and said he wants my engine covers as part of the trade instead of cash and I was wondering if I actually needed them or not so I took them off and actually liked the way it looks more, this thread was perfect timing, I love this place

every cover except for the main one just lifts off... for the one in the center you either have 2 or 3 clips, depending on the year... I have an 07 it has 2 clips, you can turn with your finger nails, not sure what the 04-06 is...

Naw, the engine cover is just there for looks. It serves no other purpose. Go for it!

ding, ding, ding!!!! We have a winner. The covers are purely cosmetic, but most folks don't know that.

I took mine off. Looks better without it, and I believe it lets heat escape more easily.

You will get a little more injector noise but that's about it. Inside the car you can't hear it. It's only noticable if you're outside with the engine running and even then if you didn't know the car well you wouldn't notice it.
