dodge offered me only $17K trade in for my 06 today.
my dad went to the dealer today to order me an R/T dodge challenger, and since he already bought an SRT8 challenger from them they gave me a really good deal on the 09 challenger fully loaded (below MSRP)
anyway, they only wanted to give me 17K for my TL and it blue books at 23K. i decided not to do it because i would have to pay close to 15K to get even on the trade. so boo.

when trading in a car the the trade in amount is all relative based on what they are selling their car to you for...for example, do you really expect them to give you a good deal on the car you are buying and give you blue book trade in for your car.....dont think soo...now if you pay msrp, they might give you 23k for your car...its all a numbers game and once you figure that out, then you can find a deal that makes sense for you....dont forget that when trading in a car, you dont pay sales tax on the trade in amount either, so that 20k you might beable to get for a private sale will now have you paying full sales tax on the car you are buying...so the trade in amount can be less then what you think you can get and still work out in your favor.....

Try getting a trade-in price from Carmax. In my area I've always gotten at least 1.5K more than dealer trade-in price even after the loss in tax. It's free, they're quick (usually less than 15 minutes if they're not busy), and they will buy yours with or without a purchase from them.
I have done it that way 3 times and made out much better than dealer trade offers.
Worth a shot!

how many of you have actually even seen a challenger in person? i have personally drivin one and see it every day in my garage. this is not a CHARGER which is an ugly pos.
the challenger is pretty big but it is real fast. real fast. my dads has about 450HP with minor mods.
the R/T is a 5.7L and the SRT is a 6.1 for about 8K difference in price with everything else pretty much the same(all the same options) except the design of the seats.
the challenger is lacking compared to the TL in the interior, ill give you that, but its still nice on the inside, and the push button keyfob is also nice.
i owe much more on my TL than the average owner. i paid 44K for my tl because i was upside down on my car before. i still owe about 32K on my TL. i bought it new, also.

the only difference between an R/T and a SRT challenger is the motor and brakes. everything else is optional. i built the R/T just like my dads challenger minus the sun roof (not really interested in sunroof anymore)

I have seen a couple on the road and three at a local dealership. it is one good looking car, and definitely better than the Charger. Dodge made a smart move discontinuing the Magnum and reusing the chassis for this car.
that being said, you buy this car going from one type of car to another. the TL belongs to a different category (entry level luxury) while the Challenger belongs to another. this is a TL forum, and so it is expected we be biased to the car we have (and you currently have). there is nothing wrong with owning the Challenger, its a good strong car, and the retro look is ok in my book. but its just not my cup of tea.
if i want power, id go with imports, not domestics. but thats just me.
my advice - keep the TL. with the way things are going, Id rather you pay what you have than get into another debt/loan.

no joke. so now i am either going to wait another 7-8 months to buy one,or pay off the negative on my car and buy a bike + do more mods on the TL. i am having a tough time deciding which i want more (a bike or challenger)

i love the TL still, but im really liking the new muscle that is coming out, even the new camaro, and the transam concept.
the GT500KR is also nice
the motors in these things are just nasty also.
im kind of scared to SC my car and be dissapointed in the power,so that is one tough thing about it.
i like that the challenger is one of the only cars ive ever been in that i honestly didnt have the urge to mod other than wheels and minor bolt ons. i like the stock wheels alot, but not for the challenger,i feel the need for some deep dishes on it whenever i look at my dads.
i used to be extremely against any kind of american muscle(domestics) but i find my self more and more liking them.
i feel like im growing out of the import scene.
ive done bagged trucks, now imports, and i feel like something different again, thats maybe what is giving me such an urge to move on to american muscle. (for once there are nice american cars that actually have decent motors)

ive ridin about 5 diff bikes so far,and i rode on the dirt from age 5-18 pretty much every day (grew up in the desert)
i am in love with riding, and always have been, but having a kid makes it difficult to be able to ride all the time.
realisticly,i am more likely going to have to keep my car,and i am about 95% sure i will get my bike in the next 7 or so months. (deciding which bike to buy is another one of my dilemmas.)

well if your in debt, then i dont see how get a new car that cost more than the TL, will help you much. but they are 2 entirely different cars so....
and i heard a couple of TLs beating the charger in a race, so if your disappointed with your cra's speed, idk how it will turn out with an even slower car.

i was looking at new cars last week, the dealer first came back with a trade in of my 05TL at 14,500, then when i laughed in their face they told me i was in luck and they would give me 17K for the car. They also brought up the tax advantage, so basically it was like trading the car for 18K. i still walked out.

Think that's bad?? I went to a local Lexus dealer recently to get numbers on an IS-F (had nothing to do that day), and they gave me $23,000 for my 08 TL-S with 5K miles on it.

You have no idea how much I regret not telling those pieces of shit off. The salesman (~25 Y/O) even gave me this big photo album to look at that he "only lets car guys see." You know what was in it? Photos of his POS riced out '99 Civic that he supposedly dropped "$20K" in to. I kid you not, he literally said he put $20K into this Civic. It has some fuckin ebay body kit on it, KONIG rims (not even Volks or Works) and some 5Zigen exhaust or something. I tried so hard not to laugh.
PS: Sorry for the profanity, I'm literally getting angry right now just thinking about that day...

Wow, those are some terrible trade-in values. Recessions tend to drive up used car prices because nobody is buying new cars.
If you really need a new car, sell your car private party- the tax arguments are a little exagerated and don't offset the thousands you would be losing from a dealer. At least in CA where SD's rate is 7.75, every 1000 you're screwed in trade-in saves you a whopping $75.50 - thats no BFD in my book.
