Paid $4.15 a gallon for premo here in the Chicago burbs yesterday evening. It took a huge bump at some point yesterday. Lets all be glad we drive fuel relatively fuel efficient cars!!! Imagine driving a Tahoe or a Escalade or something stupid like that. Not sure why the OP single out TL-S's since both the base and Type S cars use premium...and get relatively similar fuel economy ratings.

I just paid $4.40 a gallon around here. Interesting how we produce a ton of oil and refine it here and it's one of the most expensive places in the US. Luckily I've been able to stretch out a tank for 3 weeks on average.

I've learned that gas stations basically set their own prices. Sure they pay a certain amount for the fuel delivered to them and "supposedly" set the price based on what they pay for it. But that's not always the case. Saturday gas went from $3.39 (89 octane) to $3.49. Miraculously last night it jumped to $3.69. Did they get another load in last night? I bet not, they just decided they need to be closer to the national average. And over the next few days the price will go down a few cents until they get refueled again.

My TL can do this, too!
Why does the owner say that? Hunch?

I honestly think there is a coalition of sorts with gas station owners. I think they call/email eachother and say "hey, let's set the gas prices and $X and let it ride."
It's funny how when crude oil prices drop they say it takes 6-8 weeks to see that at the pump. But when the price rises, it takes a day.

What you say is correct. And market prices (options and futures anyhow; spot prices, not so much) are based on expectations. The bump in price over the past couple of months was to account for Libya, etc.
The market does not account for UNEXPECTED events: the destruction of a major refinery, for example, or a major disruption in oil supply.
You also need to keep in mind that much of the oil that will make gasoline for the next couple of months is enroute. It's already extracted and sold. So that price and expected supply need is stable (assuming demand forecasts are close).
IOW - there is currently an expectation that supply is stable over the short-term.
Could that change significantly? Yes. As of today, is it expected to change significantly? No.
So, if supply is not expected to change siginificantly over the next couple of months, how does the station owner in the OP "know for sure" that prices will hit $5+?

Today gas futures for this month are up another $.02 to $3.19 so we will see where this ride goes but eventually this kinda of pricing will really hurt consumers and force more people to miss there mortgage and credit card payments

I spoke to a gas station attendant the other day and he told me that the owner watches the gas market futures daily and then calls towards the end of the afternoon to tell them either to raise or lower it...
I even asked "you guys change prices up even though you havent paid more for new gas its still the same gas that was there yesterday?"
He said yea they just raise it depending on the market and how it settles at the end of the day... also they dont mess with prices over the weekend since the market is closed.
Crazy huh?? raise prices on fuel that they already paid a lower price for just because market futures went up today.... i guess they know if all the stations do it they can do it as well.
my station now is $4.13 - $4.23 - $4.33 for 87 - 89 - 91 went up $.04 last night

Also authority officials wants consumers to report any gas station that you feel is ripping you off since some of them take advantage of the situation to slightly bring gas prices to their liking. Gas prices indeed are heading to 5 dollars a gallon if not worse probably. However if you are concern about it then try not using your car to often or if is not necessary, if you aren't then just live with it. In my case i have a choice since i daily drive my car to my job, i can use the subway system or maybe a bike! lol..

If you think about it... you're not paying that much more with Premium vs. Regular.
If you do the math, each gallon is about 40 cents more. The TL's take about 16 gallons, so that's about $6.40 you're paying extra per tank.
Now if you drive an average of 12,000 miles a year, then thats roughly 190 bucks extra a year PREMIUM would cost you over regular.
Not that bad guys... you paid a premium for the car to begin with.

I bought the TL-S in November 2010 when premium was $2.54/gal (Chevron) ... and just after 4 monthly payments, i paid $3.99/gal last night. Used to get a full tank from when the fuel light lit at around $42. Last night I paid $59. I drive 55miles round trip to work and traffic in MIAMI is nasty. full tank lasts me 5 week days with 280-290 miles. In the winter I was able to get 300-310 miles. Went from spending $180 a month on gas to $280-$300 and thats only for work. Weekend fill ups are not included.
I do wish I could increase mileage though ... 280 miles on a full tank just doesnt seem right ...:-/
But i would agree with the rest... The difference I pay ... is well worth the fun I have driving my baby :-)

All the 3rd gen TL take premium.....so everyone will be affected. Looking at the price of oil slowly marching up I would say that $5 gas is a very real possiblity.
Also I belive that gas will get much more expensive than that based upon this:
They are now working on a way to REMOVE the USD as the world's reserve currency (thank you druken spenders in our government). Once that is complete, you will see some SERIOUS inflation.....not gonna post links cause if you all own a TL you can definately figrue out how to use teh google....

I ran some quick numbers. Based on my MID I am getting 25 mpg. If this car were tuned for 87 octane and would get 23 mpg, then we are better off any time the gas prices are above $2.50/gal. The higher the price of gas, the better the advantage. Using these mpg figures, if gas reaches $5/gal, we save almost $0.01 per mile, which is a good thing.

Niether the mpg loss nor engine wear risk are worth $10 - $15/month ($0.30 - $.50 per day) to me.

this fuel reserve is for a cataclysmic event. the government doesnt give 2 ounces of rat shit about how much u spend on gas. it has nothing to do with the middle east. US controls the prices

idk about the price in US, but in canada it isnt that bad right now. compare to we had 140c+/L few years ago. and its only 120c now, but it already takes me $70+ to fill up. and our dollar actually worth more than your dollar right now, sucks.

This is very interesting. I live in NC. When I used to go live in FL for college The gas in SC was so much cheaper. Now I see why. FL gas was always as high as home. Now i see why as the taxes are almost the same as NC...lol. I'm a very liberal Democrat but damnit please USA drill for more oil. We need to try sustaining our own energy. They want to star drilling off the NC coast I hear...
We need fund new technology for the development of sustainable energy. The oil industry needs to be regulated, we cant have a system where one group of people's speculation or a civil war in a remote region of the world can cause fluctuations of nearly 1/3 in a matter of weeks. Easier said then done though.

I would rather spend an extra 2000 in gas per year than drive some piece of s*** ford fiesta. If you have 35000 to spend on a new car, than you should be able to afford the premium in gas. Comes with the territory. You dont date Kim Kardashian and expect her to be happy staying home every night

ok for those pissing and moaning over paying for premium...as others have mentioned its only an extra maybe $200 a year (at 12-15K miles for the year). deal with it. if you wanted fuel efficient go drive a prius or a civic hybrid. the TL is an entry level sports luxury sedan with a V6. we should be so lucky to get the MPGs we get. if you dont' like it, drive a little 4 cylinder and you'll save in your fuel costs. better yet, use mass transit, a bike or your legs to get you where you need to go then you won't have to worry about paying for gas.
as with anything for our cars, you pay to play. is your lifestyle going to change that much b/c you paid $4+/gallon for gas?? not likely. and if it is, you may have to rethink if you are living beyond your means (look what happened with the housing market).
